Like you, the Department of Information Services (INS) works within changing capability requirements that are needed in support of our changing business environment under ever shrinking time frames. We refer staff to a number of skills frameworks: IT Professional skills (SFIA); Library professional skills (CILIP and/or Library skills framework currently in development with the IRU in Australia); Communication, Leadership and other core skills (such as AGPS Leadership & core skills or QLD PS CLF). When schools and communities appoint teachers to work with disengaged young people, the educators must be passionate individuals who have a history of being crazy about their students, willing to be engaging and committed to a student-first perspective. This is not an easy path, but as demonstrated by Nga Tamaiti Rangatira (Children of Chiefs) it is a worthwhile endeavor.

Alternative education provides learners, teachers, schools, and communities with disengaged young people with a rare opportunity to rethink, reimagine and reform the way that learners can own and manage the ecosystem that leads to their success (context, process, time, and people - including themselves at the center). When educators make curriculum decisions it is beneficial to have a guiding set of pillars, as Tipu Whare does, to ensure the time and funding available is directed towards learning experiences that support the pillars of belonging, mastery, independence, and generosity. When schools and communities appoint teachers to work with disengaged young people, the educators must be passionate individuals who have a history of being crazy about their students, willing to be engaging and committed to a student-first perspective. This is not an easy path, but as demonstrated by Nga Tamaiti Rangatira (Children of Chiefs) it is a worthwhile endeavor.

- 3. Have your ideas stagnated or you feel you are in a ‘block state’?
- 5. Write clearly the issue, topic, problem or situation to be solved or considered on a whiteboard or shared digital document (such as a Google Doc) Application
- 7. In the center write the problem title or generally central topic of the problem, in as few words as possible such as ‘fluid leak’ or ‘hyperactivity’ or ‘falling grades’ Application
- 9. Create a list or group of nouns randomly identified by yourself or a team or a class - you could use a random word generator that can provide nouns, verbs or adjectives Application
- 11. Between the random words and the problem title, generate a Bridging Word for each random word - this new word is a bridge between the problem and the random words Application
- 13. 1. Replace a problem title word with one of the random words - what thinking does this create? What is the relationship between the problem title, the bridges and the random words - is there a creative leap that can be taken? Discuss or analyse the properties of the random words (they are nouns) such as strength, weight, colour, origin, specialities like magnetic, waterproof etc. Application
