Store Dot promises to recharge your phone in just 30
seconds, but not until 2016
Running out of power is pretty much the biggest pain of modern
day smartphones, and while sitting around waiting for them to charge isn’t
usually the end of the world, there are still better things you could be
doing.
Store Dot promises to recharge your phone in just 30
seconds, but not until 2016
Enter StoreDot, an Israeli technology company with a special
battery and charger that can supposedly cut re-juicing time down to around
30 seconds. The prototype charging unit, designed for the Samsung Galaxy
S4, was demoed for the first time at Microsoft’s Think Next conference in
Tel Aviv, Israel, today – but most of the innovation comes in the battery
pack itself, rather than the charger.
Store Dot promises to recharge your phone in just 30
seconds, but not until 2016
As special batteries are required, there’s no need to worry about
the effect on the long-term life of your existing battery pack. In fact, the
company says that in addition to charging faster, StoreDot batteries will
“withstand thousands of charge/discharge cycles, prolonging battery life
expectancy considerably”.
Check out the impressive but bizarrely-noisy-for-a-silent-movie
clip below for a demo.
Store Dot promises to recharge your phone in just 30
seconds, but not until 2016
It’s not the first time nanotechnology has been applied to speed
up charging in smartphones, 18-year-old Eesha Khare bagged a runner-up
spot at Intel’s International Science and Engineering Fair in May last year.
While it might seem like one small dream come true – any
reduction in charging time is welcome around here – the technology is still
a long way off making it to market. The plan is to go into mass production
in late 2016, StoreDot’s CEO Dr. Doron Myersdorf, told TNW.

seconds, but not until 2016
Myersdorf added that the company counts “a large Asian
smartphone manufacturer” among its strategic investors – and judging
from the video, there’s a fairly good idea which company it might be.
It doesn’t stop at smartphone batteries though, StoreDot calls the
underlying technology ‘Nanodots’ and has just scored $6 million in
funding to further develop it. According to the company, its “nanoscale
crystals” made up of “chemically synthesized bio-organic peptide
molecules” could be used in other consumer electronics, such as displays.

“The breakthrough technology in Store Dot Nanodots is that
they demonstrate diverse physical and electrochemical properties at
nanoscale, including visible luminescence, showing red, green and blue
colors that enhance new generation display technology,” the company
says.
Band-Aid Sized MP3 Player Powered By Body Heat
The last complaint you will usually hear about MP3 players like
the iPod is that they are too big. But get ready for the MP3 player in your
hand to get much smaller, the size of a Band-Aid, to be specific
Band-Aid Sized MP3 Player Powered By Body Heat
It's called the Skinny Player, and it's being designed by Chih-Wei
Wang and Shou-His Fu. Unlike the current generation of iPod Shuffles and
iPod Nanos, the Skinny Player does not need to be clipped onto your clothes or
shoved into your pocket. They are designing the Skinny Player to stick to your
skin like you would attach a Band-Aid. But unlike Band-Aids, this tiny MP3
player will not lose its stickiness as you peal it off for the hundredth time.
Scars won't be necessary for the Skinny Player to work though. No
batteries either. The Skinny Player's designers say it will be powered by body
heat.
Band-Aid Sized MP3 Player Powered By Body Heat
The design only includes an on/off button and flexible speakers,
no word yet on adjusting the volume. But the memory capacity won't be
the best, as it is designed to only store one album.
Few of the technical details about the tiny MP3 player have been
leaked, so how exactly it will be powered by body heat is unclear. The
small size and the ability to stick it onto your skin like a Band-Aid should
make the Skinny Player perfect for runners who now depend on their
iPods to keep them energized on the running path.
Band-Aid Sized MP3 Player Powered By Body Heat
As Dvice points out , the Skinny Player is still just a good idea
that is still a long way from becoming a reality. But judging by how many
technology blogs have picked up this story, it may just be a matter of
time.
New version of Qi to deliver 15 watts of wireless power
We all know the ups and downs of wireless charging. It’s an
awesome technology that allows us to charge devices just by placing them
on a special surface. Whether it’s our favorite home charger or the cubby
inside of our Toyota (I love the inclusion of Qi chargers in cars), it’s so
useful and easy.
New version of Qi to deliver 15 watts of wireless
power
However, there is a big downside: the charging rate is slower than a
standard 2A charger that comes with most modern devices. New devices even
come with support for Quick Charging, which charge at an incredible rate. But
the latest standard of Qi charging should bring it in line with modern wired
chargers.
The latest standard will charge at 15W, which is 3 amps at the
standard 5V. This should charge your device to 60 percent in just half an hour,
which puts it in line with Qualcomm Quick Charge’s claims. That’s pretty
amazing and should really boost the user base of Qi wireless charging. What do
you think? Will you get a wireless charger if it can charge this fast?
The iPad with a twist: Revolutionary 'paper' tablet
unveiled - and it could replace your laptop within five years
A revolutionary new tablet screen the thickness of a sheet of
paper that can be twisted and dropped without damage has been revealed.
Developed by Queen’s University in Canada in collaboration with
Plastic Logic and Intel Labs, it could lead to revolutionary new gadgets
that are virtually unbreakable - and as thin as a piece of paper.
The firm behind the screen has even shown off a radical new
version of the office desk - with sheets of paper instead of screens.

- and it could replace your laptop within five years
It plans to launch the screen later this week at the Consumer
Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
It has also shown off a concept for a new desktop - using sheets
of paper for each app rather tahn a traditional screen with windows.
The iPad with a twist: Revolutionary 'paper' tablet
unveiled - and it could replace your laptop within five years
Instead of using several apps or windows on a single display, users
have ten or more interactive displays or 'PaperTabs', with each being a different
app.
They can also be used as e-books, with users simply bending the
screen to turn pages.
'Using several PaperTabs makes it much easier to work with multiple
documents,' says Roel Vertegaal, Director of Queen’s University’s Human
Media Lab.
For example, PaperTab allows a user to send a photo simply by
tapping one PaperTab showing a draft email with another PaperTab showing
the photo.

The email is sent either by placing the PaperTab in an out tray, or
by bending the top corner of the display.
Similarly, a larger drawing or display surface is created simply by
placing two or more PaperTabs side by side.

The GPD XD Is A Portable Android Gaming Handheld
In fact, to be fair, this isn’t really a smartphone, it’s simply a
handheld Android gaming device. Think more along the lines of a portable
version of the Android consoles which have and still exist. The device is
called the GPD XD, and while it takes on the form of Nintendo’s wildly
popular portable, it has a slightly different button control scheme. It
features dual joy sticks which are located towards the top of the device, a
d-pad, a,b,x,y buttons, and right and left trigger and bumper buttons, and a
series of other buttons in the middle for volume and other functions.
The GPD XD Is A Portable Android Gaming Handheld
Right now the device is on a presale so it hasn’t actually
launched, but those that love playing games on Android and would rather
do so with a dedicated gaming device, could opt for the GPD XD which
looks to come in two different colors, blue or black, and two different
storage size models for each colors, 16GB and 32GB. Prices for the
presale are also discounted so those who pick it up early will get the 16GB
model for $149.99, and the 32GB model for $169.99. As for the rest of the
specs, the GPD XD is sporting a 5-inch IPS display with HD (720p)
resolution,

and it’s powered by a Rockchip quad-core processor (specifically
the RK3288 CPU) with a Mali-T764 GPU. It’s also got 2GB of RAM and
has expandable storage up to 128GB via the microSD card slot, and it runs
Android 4.4 KitKat. If you’re looking for a dedicated gaming device to
handle your Android gaming needs, this little unit might not be a bad
option.
