Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.

PREFACE
Mathematics has an important role in our life, it not only helps in day
–to-day situations but also develops logical reasoning, abstract
thinking and imagination. It enriches life and provides new
dimensions to thinking. The struggle to learn abstract principles
develops the power to formulate and understand arguments and the
capacity to see interrelations amoung concepts. The enriched
understanding helps us deal with abstract ideas in other subjects as
well. The scope of mathematics includes many aspects of our life and
our environment. This relationships needs to be bought out at all
possible places.
In first chapter deals with comparison of numbers,
introducing large numbers and the problems related to large numbers,
Second chapter deals with introducing the whole numbers and their
properties. In third chapter deals with factors and multiples of
numbers and their properties, prime and composite numbers,
divisibility test and HCF and LCM.
I hope that the text will help to ensure that learn to enjoy mathematics
and understanding of basic knowledge about numbers. I look forward

CHAPTER 1
KNOWING OUR NUMBERS
Counting things is easy for us now. We can count objects in large numbers and
represent them through numerals. We can also communicate large numbers
using suitable number names. We use numbers and know many things about
them. Numbers helps us count concrete objects. They help us to say which
collection of objects is bigger and arrange them in order. In this chapter, we
shall move forward on interesting things.
Comparison of numbers
Examples:
i) 92,4426, 26589, 392
Here the greatest number has the most thousands and the smallest is only in
hundreds or in tens. So the smallest is 92 and the greatest is 26589.
ii) Compare 4568 and 2536
These two numbers have the same number of digits. They are both in thousands.
But the digit at the thousands place in 4568 is greater than that in 2356.So 4568
is greater than 2536.
iii) Compare 4236 and 4517
Here too the numbers have the same number of digits. Further, the digits at the
thousands place are same in both. So we move the next digit, that is to the digit
at the hundreds place. The digit at the hundreds place is greater in 4517 than in
4236.Therefore, 4517 is greater than 4236.

Ascending order
Ascending order means arrangement from the smallest to the greatest.
Example:
Arranging the following numbers in ascending order
i) 842, 8569, 574, 236, 4125
Ans:-236, 574, 842, 4125, 8569
Descending order
Descending order means arrangements from the greatest to the smallest.
Example:-
Arranging the following numbers in descending order
i) 1254, 265, 3698, 4587, 452
Ans:-4587, 3698, 1254, 452, 265
Introducing 10,000
We know that beyond 99 there is no 2-digit number. 99 is the greatest 2-
digit number. Similarly, the greatest 3- digit number is 999 and the greatest 4-
digit number is 9999.
Look at the pattern: 9+1 =10 =10 x1
99+1 =100 =10x10
999+1 =1000 =10x100
We observe that
Greatest single digit number+1=Smallest 2-digit number
Greatest 2-digit number+1=Smallest 3-digit number
Greatest 3-digit number+1=Smallest 4-digit number
We should then expect that on adding 1to the greatest 4-digit number, we would
get the smallest 5-digit number, that is 9999+1=10000.The new number which
is called ten thousand.

Expansion of numbers
Examples:-
i) 65 = 6 x 10 + 5 x 1
Here 5 is in the ones place and 6 is in the tens place.
ii) 369 = 3x100+6x10+9x1
Here 9 is in the ones place , 6 is in the tens place and 3 is in the
hundreds place.
iii) 5236 = 5 x 1000 + 2 x 100 + 3 x 10 + 6 x 1
Here 6 is in the ones place , 3 is in the tens place , 2is in the hundreds
place and 5 is in the thousands place.
iv) 45278 = 4 x 10000 + 5 x 1000 + 2 x 100 + 7 x 10 + 8 x 1
Here 8 is in the ones place ,7 is in the tens place , 2is in the hundreds
place,5 is in the thousands place and4 is in the ten thousands place.
Introducing 1,00,000
Adding 1 to the greatest 5-digit number, should give the smallest 6-digit
number :99,999+1=1,00,000
This number is named one lakh.One lakh comes next to 99,999.
10x10,000 =100,000
We may now writ 6-digit numbers in the expanded form as
2,46,853 = 2x1,00,000+4x10,000+6x1,000+8x100+5x10+3x1
This number has 3 is in the ones place , 5 is in the tens place , 8 is in the
hundreds place ,6 is in the thousands place and4 is in the ten thousands
placeand 2 is lakh place.
Large numbers
If we add one more to the greatest 6-digit number we get the smallest 7-digit
number. It is called ten lakh. The smallest 8-digit number is called one crore.

EXAMPLE 1: Population of sundarnagar was 2,35,471 in the year 1991.
In the year 2001 it was found to be increased by 72,958. What was the
population of the city in 2001?
Solution: Population of the city in 2001
= Population in the city 1991+Increase in population
= 2,35,471 + 72,958
= 308429.
Population of the city in 2001 was 308429.
EXAMPLE 2: In one state, the number of bicycles sold in the year 2002-
2003 was 7,43,000. In the year 2003-2004 , the number of bicycles sold was
8,00,100. In which year were more bicycles sold? and how many more?
Solution: Clearly, 8,00,100 is more than 7,43,000. So, in that state, more
bicycles were sold in the year 2003-2004 than in 2002-2003.
Now, 800100-743000=57100.
57,100 more bicycles were sold in the year 2003-2004.
EXAMPLE 3:The town newspaper is published every day. One copy has 12
pages. Everyday 11,980 copies are printed. How many total pages are
printed everyday?
Solution: Each copy has 12 pages. Hence, 11,980 copies will have
12x11,980
Now, 11980 x 12 = 23960
23960 + 11980 = 143760
Everyday 1,43,760 pages are printed.
EXAMPLE 4: The number of sheets of paper available for making
notebooks is 75,000. Each sheet makes 8 pages of a notebook. Each
notebook contains 200 pages. How many notebooks can be made from the
paper available?
Solution: Each sheet makes 8 pages.

Hence, 75,000 sheets make 8 x 75,000 pages,
Now, 75000 x 8 = 600000
Thus, 6,00,000 pages are available for making notebooks.
Now, 200 pages make 1 notebook.
Hence, 6,00,000 pages make 600000 / 200 = 3000 note books.
Estimating to nearest tens by rounding off
Example 1: Now consider 12, which lies between 10 and20. However 12 is
closer to 10 than 20. So we round off 12 to 10.
Example 2:Consider 17, which lies between 10 and20. However 17 is closer
to 20 than 10. So we round off 17 to 20.
Note:-Number 5 is equidistant from both 0and 10; it is a common practice to
round it off as 10.
Estimating to the nearest hundreds by rounding off
Examples:
410 is closer to 400, so it is rounded off to 400, correct to nearest hundred.
889 lies between 800 and 900.It is nearer to 900, so it is rounded off as 900
correct to nearest hundred.
Numbers 1 to 49 are closer to 0 than to 100, and so are rounded off to 0.
Numbers 51 to 99 are closer to 100 than to 0, and so are rounded off to 100.
Number 50 is equidistant from 0 and 100 both. It is a common practice to
round it off as 100.
Check if the following rounding off is correct or not:
841 800; 9537 9500; 49730 49700;
2546 2500; 286 200; 5750 5800;
168 200; 149 100; 9870 9800;
Correct those which are wrong.
Estimating to the nearest thousands by rounding off

We know that numbers 1 to 499 are nearer to 0 than to 1000, so these numbers
are rounded off as 0.
The numbers 501 to 999 are nearer to1000 than 0 so they are rounded off as
1000.
Number 500 is also rounded off as 1000.
Check if the following rounding off is correct or not :
2573 3000; 53552 5300;
6404 6000; 65437 6500;
7805 7000; 3499 4000;
Correct those which are wrong.
Estimating outcomes of number situations
There are no rigid rules when you want to estimate the outcomes of numbers.
The procedure depends on the degree of accuracy required and how quickly the
estimate is needed. The most important thingis,how sensible the guessed answer
would be.
To estimate sum or difference
As we have seen above we can round off a number to any place. When you
estimate any sum or difference, you should have an idea of why you need to
round off and therefore the place to which you would round off. Look at the
following examples.
EXAMPLE 5 : Estimate: 5,290 + 17,986.
Solution : You find 17,986 > 5,290.
Round off to thousands.
17,986 is rounds off to 18,000
+5,290 is round off to +5,000
Estimated sum = 23,000
You may attempt to find the actual answer and verify if the estimate is
reasonable.

EXAMPLE6: Estimate : 5,673 – 436
Solution : To begin with we round off to thousands.
5,673 rounds off to 6,000
-436 rounds off to - 0
Estimated difference = 6,000
This is not a reasonable estimate. To get a closer estimate, let us try rounding
each number to hundreds.
5,673 rounds off to 5,700
-436 rounds off to -400
Estimated difference = 5,300
This is a better and more meaningful estimate.
To estimate products
Round off each factor to its greatest place, then multiply the rounded off factors.
Example: now estimate 81 x 479 using this rule:
479 is rounded off to 500(rounding off to hundred), and 81 is rounded off to
80(rounding off to tens).
The estimated product = 500 x 80 = 40,000
An important use of estimates for you will be to check your answers. Suppose,
you have done the multiplication 37 x 1889, but are not sure about your
answer.A quick and reasonable estimate of the product will be 40 x 2000 i.e.
80,000. If your answer is close to 80,000, it is probably right. On the other
hand, if it is close to 8000 or 8,00,000, something is surely wrong in your
multiplication.

CHAPTER 2
WHOLE NUMBERS
As we know, we use 1, 2, 3, 4,… when we begin to count. They come naturally
when we start counting. Hence, mathematicians call the counting numbers as
Natural numbers.
Predecessor and successor
Given any natural numbers, you can add 1 to that number and get the next
number i.e. you get it successor.
The successor of 16 is 16 + 1 = 17, that of 19 is 19 + 1 = 20 and so on. The
number 16 comes before 17, we say that the predecessor of 17 is 17 – 1 = 16,
the predecessor of 20 is 20 – 1 = 19, and so on.
The number 3 has a predecessor and a successor. The successor is 4 and
predecessor is 2.The successor of 2 is 3 and predecessor of 2 is 1.
Whole Numbers
We have seen that the number 1 has no predecessor in natural numbers. To the
collection of natural numbers we add zero as the predecessor for 1.
The natural numbers along with zero form the collection of whole numbers.
Properties of Whole Numbers
When we look into various operations on numbers closely, we notice several
properties of whole numbers. These properties helps us to understand the
numbers better. Moreover, they make calculations under certain operations very
simple.
Closure property: Whole numbers are closed under addition and also
under multiplication.

1. The whole numbers are not closed under subtraction.
EXAMPLE: 6 – 2 = 4, a whole number
7 – 8 = -1, not a whole number
5 – 4 = 1, a whole number
3 – 9 = -6, not a whole number
2. Whole numbers are not closed under division.
EXAMPLE: 8 / 4 = 2, a whole number
5 / 7 = 5 / 7, not a whole number
12 / 3 = 4, a whole number
6 / 5 = 6 / 5, not a whole number
Commutativity of addition and multiplication
You can add two whole numbers in any order.
i.e. 4 + 6 = 6 + 4
So we say that addition is commutative for whole numbers. This property is
known as commutativity for addition.
Also you can multiply two whole numbers in any order.
i.e. 4 x 5 = 5 x 4
We say multiplication is commutative for whole numbers.
Thus, addition and multiplication are commutative for whole numbers.
Associativity of addition and multiplication
(5 + 7) + 3 = 12 + 3 = 15 and 5 + (7 + 3) = 5 + 10 = 15.
i.e.(5 + 7) + 3 = 5 + (7 + 3)
This is associativity of addition for whole numbers.
EXAMPLE 1: Add the numbers 234,197 and 103?
Solution : 234 + 197 + 103 = 234 + (197 + 103)
= 234 + 300 = 534
(6 x 5) x 3 = 6 x(5 x 3) this is associativity of multiplication of whole
numbers. The associative property of multiplication is very useful in the
following type s of sums.

EXAMPLE 2: Find 12 x 35?
Solution : 12 x 35 = (6 x 2) x 35 = 6 x (2 x 35) = 6 x 70 = 420.
In the above example, we have used associativity to get the advantage of
multiplying the smallest even number by a multiple of 5.
EXAMPLE 3: Find 8 x 1769 x 125?
Solution : 8 x 1769 x 125 = 8 x 125 x 1769
= (8 x 125) x 1769
= 1000 x 1769 = 17,69,000.
Distributivity of multiplication over addition
6 x (5 + 3) = (6 x 5) + (6 x 3) this known as distributivity of multiplication over
addition.
EXAMPLE 4: The school canteen charge Rs 20 for lunch and Rs 4 for milk for
each day .How much money do you spend in 5 days on these things?
Solution : Find the total amount for one day.
Then multiply it by 5 i.e.
Cost of (lunch + milk) for one day = Rs (20 + 4)
Cost for 5 days = Rs 5 x (20 + 4) = Rs 5 x 24
= Rs 120
The example shows that
5 x (20+4) = (5 x 20) + (5 x 4)
This is the principle of distributivity of multiplication over addition.
EXAMPLE 4: Find 12 x35 using distributivity?
Solution : 12 x 35 = 12 x (30 + 5)
= 12 x 30 + 12 x 5
= 360 + 60 = 420
EXAMPLE 5 : Simplify 125 x 55 + 126 x 45?
Solution : 126 x 55 + 126 x 45 = 126 x (55 + 45)
= 126 x 100
= 12600.

Identity (for addition and multiplication)
The number ‘zero’ has a special role in addition. When you add zero to
any whole number we get the adding whole number as the answer.
i.e. 7 + 0 = 7

So zero is called an identity for addition of whole number or additive
identity for whole numbers.
Zero has a special role in multiplication too. Any number when
multiplied by zero becomes zero.
For example, observe the pattern:
5 x 6 = 30
5 x 0 = 0
9 x 0 = 0
10 x 0 = 0
Additive identity means a number remain unchanged when added to zero.
Similar is the case for a multiplicative identity for whole numbers.
One is the multiplicative identity for whole numbers.
For example, observe the pattern:

7 x 1 = 7

100 x 1 = 100

PLAYING WITH NUMBERS
Factors and multiples
A factor of number is exact divisor of that number.
We can say that a number is a multiple of each its factors. For example 20 is a
factor of 4 and 5 and 24 is a factor 12 and 2 and so on.
Properties of factors and multiples
1. 1 is a factor of every numbers. For example 6 = 1 x 6, 18 = 1 x 18 and so
on.
2. Every number is a factor of itself. We can write 7 as 7 = 7 x 1.
3. Every factor of a number is an exact divisor of that number. The factor of
16 are 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 also this are the exact divisor of 16.
4. Every factor is less than or equal to the given number. For example the
factor of 34 are 1, 2, 17, 34.
5. Number of factors of a given number are finite.
6. Every multiple of a number is greater than or equal to that number. The
multiple of 7 obviously, 7,14,21,28,…each of these multiples is greater
than or equal to 7.
7. The number of multiples of a given number is infinite. The multiple of 5
obviously, 5, 10, 15, 20,…the list is endless.
8. Every number is a multiple of itself. We can write 7as 7 = 7 x 1, will it be
true for other numbers.
Perfect number
A number for which sum of all its factors is equal to twice the number is called
a perfect number. The numbers 6 and 28 are perfect numbers.
EXAMPLE 1: Write all the factors of 68?

68 = 1 x 68 68 = 2 x 34 68 = 4 x 17 68 = 17 x 4
Thus, all the factors of 68 are 1,2,4,17,34 and 68.
EXAMPLE 2: Find the factors of 36?
Solution : 36 = 1 x 36 36 = 2 x 18 36 = 3 x 12 36 = 4 x 9
36 = 6 x 6
Thus, the factors are 1,2, 3,4,6,9,12,18, and 36.
EXAMPLE 3: Write first five multiples of 6?
Solution : The required multiples are : 6 x 1 = 6, 6 x 2 = 12, 6 x 3 = 18,
6 x 4 = 24, 6 x 5 = 30 i.e. 6, 12, 18, 24 and 30.
Prime and Composite Numbers
The numbers other than 1 whose only factors are 1 and the number itself are
called Prime numbers. There are numbers, having exactly two factors 1 and the
number itself .Such numbers are 2, 3, 5, 11 etc. These numbers are prime
numbers.
Numbers having more than two factors are called Composite numbers. There
are numbers having more than two factors like 4, 6, 8, 9, 10 and so on .These
numbers are composite numbers.
Note:-1 is neither a prime nor a composite number.
EXAMPLE 4 : Write all the prime numbers less than 15?
Solution : The required prime numbers as 2,3,5,7,11 and 13.
Even and Odd numbers
The numbers 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14,… these are called even numbers. We can
find that each of them is a multiple of 2. The rest numbers 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11,… are
called odd numbers. We can verify that a two digit number or three digit
number is even or not. We can say that a number with 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 at the ones
place is an even number. So, 350,4862,59246 are even numbers. The numbers
457, 2359, 8231 are all odd.

2 is the smallest prime number and smallest even number. The other prime
numbers 3, 5, 7, 11, 13,… we cannot find any even number in this list. Thus, we
can say that every prime number except 2 is odd number.
Tests for Divisibility of Numbers
Divisibility by 10: If a number has 0 in the ones place then it is divisible by 10.
Example: 10,20,200,150,3500,…………
Divisibility by 5: A number which has either 0 or 5 in its ones place is divisible
by 5, other numbers leave a remainder.
Example: 15,20,25,35,250,3695,……………
Divisibility by 2: A number is divisible by 2 if it has any of the digits 0,2,4,6 or
8 in its once place.
Example: 4,36,20,14,860,…………………
Divisibility by 3: If the sum of the digits is a multiple of 3, then the number is
divisible by 3.

Divisibility by6: If a number is divisible by 2 and 3 both then it is divisible by 6
also.
Example: 18,36,180,90,……………
Divisibility by 4: A number with 3 or more digits is divisible by 4 if the number
formed by its last two digits ( i.e. ones and tens ) is divisible by 4.
Example: 4612,3516,9532,……….
Divisibility by 8: A number with 4 or more digits is divisible by 8, if the
number formed by the last three digits is divisible by 8.
Example: 9216,8216,2104,……………..
Divisibility by 9: If the sum of the digits of a number is divisible by 9, then the
number itself is divisible by 9.
Example: 9,18,45,54,………….

Divisibility by 11: Find the difference between the sum of the digits at odd
place ( from the right ) and the sum of the digits at even places ( from the right )
of the number. If the difference is either 0 or divisible by 11, then the number is
divisible by 11.

Common Factors and Common Multiples
The factors of 4 are 1,2,4 and the factors of 18 are 1,2,3,6,9,18. The numbers 1
and 2 are the common factors of 4 and 18.The factors of 4 are 1,2,4 and the
factors of 15 are 1,3,5,15.These two numbers have only 1 as the common factor.
The multiples of 4 are 4,8,12,16,20,24,… and the multiples of 6 are
6,12,18,24,30,36,….Out of these ,we observe that 12,24,36,… are multiples of
both 4and 6.They are called the common multiples of 4 and 6.
Co-prime numbers
Two numbers having only 1 as a common factor are called co-prime numbers.
Thus 4 and 15 are co-prime numbers.
Some More Divisibility Rules
1. If a number is divisible by another number then it is divisible by each of
the factors of that number. Consider 24. It is divisible by 8 and i.e. 1, 2, 4
and 8 also divide 24.
2. If a number is divisible by two co-prime numbers then it is divisible by
their product also. The number 80 is divisible by 4 and 5.It is also
divisible by 4 x 5 = 20, and 4 and 5 are co-primes. Similarly, 60 is
divisible by 3 and 5 which are co-primes. 60 is also divisible by
3 x 5 = 15.
3. If two given numbers are divisible by a number, then their sum is also
divisible by that number. For example the numbers 16 and 20 are both
divisible by 4. The number 16 + 20 = 36 is also divisible by 4.
4. If two given numbers are divisible by a number,then their difference is
also divisible by that number.For example the numbers 35 and 20 are
both divisible by 5. Is their difference 35 – 20 = 15 also divisible by 5.

Prime Factorization
When a number is expressed as a product of its factors we say that the number
has been factorized. Thus, when we write 24 = 3 x 8, we say that 24 has been
factorized. This is one of the factorizations of 24. The others are:
24 = 2 x 12 24 = 4 x 6 24 = 3 x 8
= 2 x 2 x 6 = 2 x 2 x 6 = 3 x 2 x 4
= 2 x 2 x 2 x 3 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 3 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 3
In all the above factorizations of 24, we ultimately arrive at only one
factorization 2 x 2 x 2 x 3. In this factorization the only factors 2 and 3 are
prime numbers. Such a factorization of a number is called a prime factorization.
Lest us check this for the number 36.
36 = 2 x 18 36 = 3 x 12 36 = 4 x 9 36 = 6 x 6
= 2 x 2 x 9 = 3 x 3 x 4 = 2 x 2 x 9 = 2 x 3 x 6

The prime factorization of 36 is 2 x 2 x 3 x 3. i.e. the only factorization of 36.
Highest Common Factor
We can find the common factors of any two numbers. We, now try to find the
highest of these common factors. The highest common factor ( HCF ) of two or
more given numbers is the highest ( or greatest ) of their common factors. It is
also known as greatest common divisor ( GCD ).
The HCF of 20, 28, and 36 can also be found by prime factorization of these
numbers as follows:
20 = 2 x 2 x 5
28 = 2 x 2 x 7
36 = 2 x 2 x 3 x 3
The common factor of 20, 28, and 36 is 2 (occurring twice).Thus HCF of 20,
28, and 36 is 2 x 2 = 4.

Lowest Common Multiple
The lowest common multiple ( LCM ) of two or more given numbers is the
lowest ( or smallest or least ) of their common multiples. We say that lowest
common multiple of 4 and 6 is 12. It is the smallest number that both the
numbers are factors of this number.
Some Problem on HCF and LCM
We come across a number of situations in which we make use of the concepts
of HCF and LCM. We explain these situations through a few examples.
EXAMPLE 5: Two tankers contain 850 liters and 680 liters of kerosene oil
respectively. Find the maximum capacity of a container which can measure the
kerosene oil of both the tankers when used an exact number of times?
Solution : The required container has to measure both the tankers in a way that
the count is an exact number of times. So its capacity must be an exact divisor
of the capacities of both the tankers. Moreover, this capacity should be
maximum. Thus, the maximum capacity of such a container will be the HCF of
850 and 680.
Hence,
850 = 2 x 5 x 5 x 17
680 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 5 x 17
The common factors of 850 and 680 are 2, 5 and 17.
Thus, the HCF of 850 and 680 is 2 x 5 x 17 = 170.
Therefore maximum capacity of the required container is 170 liters. It will fill
the first container in 5 and the second in 4 refills.
EXAMPLE 6: In a morning walk, three persons step off together. Their steps
measure 80 cm, 85 cm and 90 cm respectively. What is the minimum distance
each should walk so that all can cover the same distance in complete steps?
Solution : The distance covered by each one of them is required to be the same
as well as minimum. The required minimum distance each should walk would
be the lowest common multiple of the measure of their steps. Thus, we find the

LCM of 80, 85 and 90. The LCM of 80, 85 and 90 is 12240.Therefore, the
required minimum distance is 12240 cm.
Negative numbers
The numbers lessthan zero are called negative numbers.This numbers with a
negative sign.

We include zero to the collection of natural numbers, we get a new collection of
numbers known as whole numbers.i.e.0,1,2,3,4,…………………
If we put whole numbers and whole numbers together , the new collection of
numbers looks like 0,1,2,3,……,-1,-2,-1,……….. and this collection of
numbers is known as integers. In this collection ,1,2,3,… are said to be positive
integers and -1,-2,-3,… are said to be negative integers.

When add two positive integers , add the numbers and place the positive sign
on the left.
Example: (+3) + (+2)=+5
When add two negative numbers, add the numbers and take the minus sign.
Example: (-2)+(-1) = -(2+1) = -3
Note:-Numbers such as 3and-3, 2and-2, when added to each other give the sum
zero. They are called additive inverse of each other.
Subtraction of numbers
To subtract an integer from another integer it is enough to add the additive
inverse of the integer that is being subtracted, to the other integer.
Example: Subtract (-) from (-10)
Solution:- (-10) - (-4) = (-10)+(additive inverse of -4)
= -10+4
= -6
