Twitter 101: Terminology
• Twitter Handle / Username
– Ex: A user's "Twitter handle" is the username they have selected and the
accompanying URL; @QIOProgram
• Follower
– Ex: Another Twitter user that follows your updates/Tweets
• Tweet(s)
– Ex: The act of posting a message in 140 characters or fewer (verb); A message
posted via Twitter (noun)
• Retweet
– Ex: A tweet that has been re-posted from another user; RT or
• Modified Tweet
– Ex: A Retweet that has been edited; MT
• Unfollow
– Ex: To cease following another Twitter user. Their Tweets no longer show up in
your home timeline.
Terminology Continued
• @Mention
– Ex: Mentioning another user in your Tweet by including the @ sign followed
directly by their username; refers to Tweets in which your username was
included. Can be used to communicate with a specific user or cite where an
article came from: “Thank you for the RT @CMSGov”
• Hashtag
– Ex: The # symbol is used to mark keywords or topics in a Tweet, it’s basically
an organized search; #patientsafety
• URL Shortener
– Ex: Shortens a full URL or link and allows for tracking/stats/analytics; Bit.ly or
Owl.ly
• Trending
– Ex: A subject algorithmically determined to be one of the most popular on
Twitter at the moment; usually in the form of a Hashtag
• List(s)
– Ex: Curated groups of other Twitter users; used to tie specific individuals into a
group on your Twitter account.
Twitter 101: Getting Started
1. Create a Name
– Two fields of identification (Name & Handle)
2. Customization
– Who is your Audience?
– What is your Industry?
– What are your brand standards?
– Personality and content matter!
3. Start following others
– See who they are following
4. Begin Tweeting and posting content
5. Gain more followers
– Re-Tweets, Re-posts, lists and searches
6. Stay Consistent!

Twitter 101: Terminology • Twitter Handle / Username – Ex: A user's "Twitter handle" is the username they have selected and the accompanying URL; @QIOProgram • Follower – Ex: Another Twitter user that follows your updates/Tweets • Tweet(s) – Ex: The act of posting a message in 140 characters or fewer (verb); A message posted via Twitter (noun) • Retweet – Ex: A tweet that has been re-posted from another user; RT or • Modified Tweet – Ex: A Retweet that has been edited; MT • Unfollow – Ex: To cease following another Twitter user. Their Tweets no longer show up in your home timeline.
  • 5. Terminology Continued • @Mention – Ex: Mentioning another user in your Tweet by including the @ sign followed directly by their username; refers to Tweets in which your username was included. Can be used to communicate with a specific user or cite where an article came from: “Thank you for the RT @CMSGov” • Hashtag – Ex: The # symbol is used to mark keywords or topics in a Tweet, it’s basically an organized search; #patientsafety • URL Shortener – Ex: Shortens a full URL or link and allows for tracking/stats/analytics; Bit.ly or Owl.ly • Trending – Ex: A subject algorithmically determined to be one of the most popular on Twitter at the moment; usually in the form of a Hashtag • List(s) – Ex: Curated groups of other Twitter users; used to tie specific individuals into a group on your Twitter account.
  • 6. Twitter 101: Getting Started 1. Create a Name – Two fields of identification (Name & Handle) 2. Customization – Who is your Audience? – What is your Industry? – What are your brand standards? – Personality and content matter! 3. Start following others – See who they are following 4. Begin Tweeting and posting content 5. Gain more followers – Re-Tweets, Re-posts, lists and searches 6. Stay Consistent!
