Optimizing Spark Deployments for Containers: Isolation, Safety, and Performan...Spark Summit
Developers love Linux containers, which neatly package up an application and its dependencies and are easy to create and share. However, this unbeatable developer experience hides some deployment challenges for real applications: how do you wire together pieces of a multi-container application? Where do you store your persistent data if your containers are ephemeral? Do containers really contain and isolate your application, or are they merely hiding potential security vulnerabilities? Are your containers scheduled across your compute resources efficiently, or are they trampling on one another?
Container application platforms like Kubernetes provide the answers to some of these questions. We’ll draw on expertise in Linux security, distributed scheduling, and the Java Virtual Machine to dig deep on the performance and security implications of running in containers. This talk will provide a deep dive into tuning and orchestrating containerized Spark applications. You’ll leave this talk with an understanding of the relevant issues, best practices for containerizing data-processing workloads, and tips for taking advantage of the latest features and fixes in Linux Containers, the JDK, and Kubernetes. You’ll leave inspired and enabled to deploy high-performance Spark applications without giving up the security you need or the developer-friendly workflow you want.

In light of new revelations about government warrantless wiretapping and electronic surveillance what role do librarians have in educating our patrons about digital privacy and security issues? Given that digital privacy is further complicated by for-profit Internet companies services, such as those provided by Facebook and Google, are our users savvy enough to understand threats to their information in this increasingly complex digital landscape? This presentation will explore issues related to current events and information security with an eye towards the implications for information literacy standards; brief examination of tools used to enhance information privacy; and discuss how librarians might play a role in helping users become more information aware.
Data Activism: data as rhetoric, data as powerSpeck&Tech
ABSTRACT: Contrary to popular beliefs that depict data as truthful or objective, a data activist navigates the data-sphere from an opposite worldview: data is never neutral, and data visualization is inevitably rhetorical. But don’t worry: this is a feature, not a bug. This talk will focus on the many ways in which data can be used for activism, with a particular focus on data-inspired housing rights initiatives like Inside Airbnb and OCIO Venezia, and the works by the information design studio Sheldon.studio.

Abstract
Cryptocurrencies represent emerging financial technologies engendered through overlapping community values of decentralised peer-to-peer exchange, encryption technologies and an overarching agenda towards the disruption of centralised banking within the fiat economy. This paper will trace the development and shifts in public discourse within social media surrounding cryptocurrencies. The last five years have seen cryptocurrencies move from technological emergence to a broadening range of applications and history potholed with disputes, divergence, hacks and scams within the community. The accompanying influence of speculation has shifted the focus from social adoption to value volatility and seen the incorporation of associated technologies within banking and other organisational processes. The emphasis within public discourse has also followed a shift from bitcoin to blockchain. The study is grounded through a Twitter analysis of cryptocurrency-related social media discourse within the Australian context. The social media analysis works with social media archives of the Australian Twittersphere captured between early 2012 to May 2017. Access to this curated archive is through TrISMA and the timeframe under analysis aligns with the most detailed available dataset. The analysis seeks to characterise the emergence of public dialogue surrounding cryptocurrency use and application over time, focusing on peak engagement events. The key concepts directing the focus and interpretation of the social media analysis include financial inclusion, socio-technical disruption and social change. The whimsical quest of the study is to learn where the digital frontier has shifted to within this community and point to possible future developments. From a community studies perspective the case study represents an initial foray into data analytics to explore whether it is possible to detect the shifting shape and form of digital community through its environmental imprint (Maddox 2016). This methodological aspect of the work speaks to an attempt to generate a data recognition practice that can be deployed to search for signatures of social disruption within digital trace data.

The Racial State Week 13: Race, digital technology and social media Alana Lentin
Increasingly, digital technology and social media are becoming important for changing understandings of race and racism. Algorithms, interfaces, and the design of platforms and websites, such as dating apps or face recognition software generate racial information of various kinds. Cyber-racism is becoming more and more of a danger with the far right using the internet to target people of colour and antiracist activists. Social media and technology are also becoming important sites for antiracist resistance. We will examine these developments and consider what impact digital technology and social media have on our daily lives as the divide between the ‘virtual’ and the ‘real’ is all but non-existent.

Making Decisions in a World Awash in Data: We’re going to need a different bo...Micah Altman
In his abstract, Scriffignano summarizes as follows:
l explore some of the ways in which the massive availability of data is changing and the types of questions we must ask in the context of making business decisions. Truth be told, nearly all organizations struggle to make sense out of the mounting data already within the enterprise. At the same time, businesses, individuals, and governments continue to try to outpace one another, often in ways that are informed by newly-available data and technology, but just as often using that data and technology in alarmingly inappropriate or incomplete ways. Multiple “solutions” exist to take data that is poorly understood, promising to derive meaning that is often transient at best. A tremendous amount of “dark” innovation continues in the space of fraud and other bad behavior (e.g. cyber crime, cyber terrorism), highlighting that there are very real risks to taking a fast-follower strategy in making sense out of the ever-increasing amount of data available. Tools and technologies can be very helpful or, as Scriffignano puts it, “they can accelerate the speed with which we hit the wall.” Drawing on unstructured, highly dynamic sources of data, fascinating inference can be derived if we ask the right questions (and maybe use a bit of different math!). This session will cover three main themes: The new normal (how the data around us continues to change), how are we reacting (bringing data science into the room), and the path ahead (creating a mindset in the organization that evolves). Ultimately, what we learn is governed as much by the data available as by the questions we ask. This talk, both relevant and occasionally irreverent, will explore some of the new ways data is being used to expose risk and opportunity and the skills we need to take advantage of a world awash in data.

Presentation part of panel 6 focused on Re-thinking Metadata and Descriptive Practices
Abstract:
As the call from the United Nations for Human Rights-based approaches to data gains momentum across the world, the LLILAS Benson Digital Initiatives team at the University of Texas at Austin begins by asking “how can post-custodial models facilitate efforts at self determination?” In particular how can participatory metadata creation approaches used by LLILAS Benson in various post-custodial partnerships across Latin America improve archival description praxis. Speaker will deliberate on previous and current implementations of ethics driven participatory metadata creation practices used for post-custodial digitization projects in a cultural heritage institution. Insights aim to further establish collaborative information processes that will in turn bring about richer, culturally sensitive and human rights centered metadata for digital cultural heritage collections.

Roundtable discussion held at the 2018 El Mundo Zurdo hosted by the Society for the Study of Gloria Anzaldua.
For many of the discussions, scholars focusing on Anzaldua’s life and work, the use of her historical materials provides a crucial foundation for these endeavors. Without Anzaldua’s
archival collections, not only would research around about her work be stalled or impossible, but also so would efforts to expose reveal her writing, teachings and legacy to others. This can be said of many other archival collections of underrepresented, excluded, or erased individuals and
communities. This roundtable seeks to address the following topics related to the central theme of representation in history and paving the way for others to occupy a place in the historical narrative.

Presentation part of the National Forum on Ethics and Archiving the Web organized by Rhizome and hosted at the New Museum. The panel titled "The Right to be Forgotten" occurred on Friday, March 23, 2018.
Panel Abstract: When individuals attempt to withdraw their materials from public archives, the goal of preserving the public record comes into conflict with the expectation of “the right to be forgotten.” This panel considers robots.txt, donor forms, and removal requests as negotiated encounters among people, institutions, and law.
Panelists include: Nicola Bingham, Itza Carbajal, Joyce Gabiola (moderator), Dorothy Howard, and Katrina Windon
Individual Presentation Abstract: This research presentation will highlight early findings of a larger research project focusing on the challenges and limitations of donor relationships forms and the implications these forms have on the rights of the donor in the archival field. The research project investigates how donor forms address permissions and consent to disclose personally identifiable information or valuable digital assets from two different participant groups, musicians and social movement organizers. For the purposes of this forum, the presentation will include a brief analysis of donor forms or statements as they relate to web archival donations and practices.
Radical Shared History Online Portal Work SessionItza Carbajal
This session presented at the 2017 Allied Media Conference brought attention to the fact that people continue to connect across the globe at an alarming speed. Now the possibility of using technology to connect the countless stories manifested in community archival materials feels like a click away. This dinner meetup brought together a small group of community archival repositories, archivists, developers, designers, and potential users such as researchers, artists, and educators to discuss and imagine different projects that could result in online digital archives portals.

Improving Workplace Safety Performance in Malaysian SMEs: The Role of Safety ...AJHSSR Journal
ABSTRACT: In the Malaysian context, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) experience a significant
burden of workplace accidents. A consensus among scholars attributes a substantial portion of these incidents to
human factors, particularly unsafe behaviors. This study, conducted in Malaysia's northern region, specifically
targeted Safety and Health/Human Resource professionals within the manufacturing sector of SMEs. We
gathered a robust dataset comprising 107 responses through a meticulously designed self-administered
questionnaire. Employing advanced partial least squares-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) techniques
with SmartPLS 3.2.9, we rigorously analyzed the data to scrutinize the intricate relationship between safety
behavior and safety performance. The research findings unequivocally underscore the palpable and
consequential impact of safety behavior variables, namely safety compliance and safety participation, on
improving safety performance indicators such as accidents, injuries, and property damages. These results
strongly validate research hypotheses. Consequently, this study highlights the pivotal significance of cultivating
safety behavior among employees, particularly in resource-constrained SME settings, as an essential step toward
enhancing workplace safety performance.

ABSTRACT: Although a significant amount of literature exists on Morocco's migration policies and their
successes and failures since their implementation in 2014, there is limited research on the integration of subSaharan African children into schools. This paperis part of a Ph.D. research project that aims to fill this gap. It
reports the main findings of a study conducted with migrant children enrolled in two public schools in Rabat,
Morocco, exploring how integration is defined by the children themselves and identifying the obstacles that they
have encountered thus far. The following paper uses an inductive approach and primarily focuses on the
relationships of children with their teachers and peers as a key aspect of integration for students with a migration
background. The study has led to several crucial findings. It emphasizes the significance of speaking Colloquial
Moroccan Arabic (Darija) and being part of a community for effective integration. Moreover, it reveals that the
use of Modern Standard Arabic as the language of instruction in schools is a source of frustration for students,
indicating the need for language policy reform. The study underlines the importanceof considering the
children‟s agency when being integrated into mainstream public schools.
