ADOPTION
Adoption is the decision-making process to make full use of an
innovation as the best course of action available.
DIFFUSION
It is the process by which an innovation is communicated through
certain channels overtime among the members of a social system.
INNOVATION
An innovation is an idea, practice or object that is perceived as new
by an individual or other unit of adoption.
DIFFUSIONS OF INNOVATION
• Diffusion is the process by which an innovation is communicated through
certain channels over time among the members of a social system. It is a
special type of communication, in that the messages are concerned with new
ideas.
ELEMENTS IN THE DIFFUSION OF INNOVATION
• Innovation
• Communication channels
• Time
• Social system
INNOVATION
• An innovation is an idea, practice or object that is perceived as new by an
individual or other unit of adoption. The perceived newness of the idea for
the individual determines his or her reaction to it.
• The newness aspect of an innovation may be expressed in terms of
knowledge, persuasion or a decision to adopt.
CHARACTERISTICS OF INNOVATIONS
RELATIVE ADVANTAGE
• It is the degree to which an innovation is perceived as better than the idea it
supersedes. The degree of relative advantage may be measured in
economic terms, but social-prestige factors, convenience and satisfaction are
also often the important components.
COMPATIBILITY
• It is the degree to which an innovation is perceived as being consistent with
the existing values, past experiences and needs of potential adopters.
COMPLEXITY
• It is the degree to which an innovation is perceived as difficult to understand and
use. In general, new ideas that are simpler to understand will be adopted more
rapidly than innovations that require the adopter to develop new skills and
understandings.
Trialability
• It is the degree to which an innovation may be experimented with on a limited
basis. An innovation that is trialable represents less uncertainty to the individual who
is considering it for adoption, as it is possible to learn by doing.
OBSERVABILITY
• It is the degree to which the results of an innovation are visible to others.
The easier it is for individuals to see the results of an innovation, the more
likely they are to adopt.
COMMUNICATION CHANNELS
• A communication channel is the means by which messages get from one
individual to another. The following classification of channels would help the
communicator to use them appropriately.
INTERPERSONAL CHANNELS
• It refers to those which are used for face to face communication
between two or more individuals.
MASS MEDIA CHANNELS
• These enable the messages to reach a larger, diverse audience
simultaneously in a relatively shorter time. eg: Radio, Television etc.
LOCALITE CHANNELS
• They originate within the social system of the receiver. eg: neighbours,
relatives, opinion leaders etc.,
COSMOPOLITE CHANNELS
• Cosmopolite channels are relatively more important at the knowledge stage in the
innovation-decision process.
• Personal cosmopolite: communication channel from outsie the social system of the
receiver. eg. Extension workers, sales personnel etc.
• Impersonal cosmopolite: communication channel from outside the social system of the
receiver and at the same time no personal face to face contact is involved.
TIME
• It is an important element in the diffusion process. Time is an obvious aspect of any
communication process. Time does not exist independently of events, but it is an
aspect of every activity. The time dimension is involved in diffusion,
• (i) in the innovation - decision process,
• (ii) in the innovativeness of an individual or other unit of adoption, and
• (iii) innovation's rate of adoption in a system.
SOCIAL SYSTEM
• It is defined as a set of interrelated units that are engaged in joint problem
solving to accomplish a common goal. The members or units of a social
system may be individuals, informal groups, organisations and / or
subsystems. The social system constitutes a boundary within which an
innovation diffuses.
CHARACTERISTICS OF PEOPLE IN MODERN SOCIAL SYSTEM
• They can readily assume themselves in quite different roles.
• They have positive attitude.
• They value education and science.
• They use and know about the advanced technology.
• They emphasize on rational and ordered relationships rather than on
emotional ones.
INNOVATION DECISION
PROCESS
TYPES OF INNOVATION DECISION
PROCESS
An individual or an organization/social system bases the type of
decision on whether an innovation is adopted/rejected.
The three types of innovation-decisions are:
Optional innovation-decisions,
Collective innovation-decisions,
Authority innovation-decisions.
Optional Innovation-Decision
This decision is made by an individual who is in some way distinguished from
others in a social system.
Collective Innovation-Decision
This decision is made collectively by all individuals of a social system.
Authority Innovation-Decision
This decision is made for the entire social system by few individuals inpositions
of influence or power.
KNOWLEDGE STAGE
Knowledge occurs when an individual (or the decision -
making unit) is exposed to the innovation's existence and gains
some understanding of how it functions.
PERSUASION STAGE
• Persuasion occurs when an individual (or other decision – making unit)
forms a favourable or unfavourable attitude toward the innovation.
• While the mental activity as the knowledge stage was mainly cognitive
(or knowing), the main type of thinking at the persuasion function is
affective (or feeling). At this stage, a general perception of the
innovation is developed. The individual becomes more psychologically
involved with the innovation and hence he or she seeks information
about the new idea.
DECISION STAGE
• Decision occurs when an individual (or other decision – making
unit) engages in activities that lead to a choice to adopt or reject
the innovation.
• Adoption is a decision to make full use of an innovation as the
best course of action available. Rejection is a decision not to
adopt an innovation.
• The small – scale trial is often part of the decision to adopt, and is
important as a means to decrease the perceived uncertainty of the
innovation of the adopter.
IMPLEMENTATION STAGE
• Implementation occurs when an individual (or other decision –
making unit) puts an innovation into use. Until the implementation
stage, the innovation-decision process has been a strictly mental
exercise. But implementation involves overt behaviour change as the
new idea is actually part into practice.
• Problems of implementation are likely to be more serious when the
adopter is an organisation rather than an individual. Reason is that in
an organisational setting, a number of individuals are usually involved
in the innovation – decision process, and the implementers are often a
different set of people from the decision makers.
CONFIRMATION STAGE
• Confirmation occurs when an individual (or other decision –
making unit) seeks reinforcement of an innovation –
decision already made, but he or she may reverse this
previous decision if exposed to conflicting messages about
the innovation.
• The confirmation stage continues after the decision to adopt
or reject for an indefinite period in time. At this stage, the
change agents have the additional responsibility of
supporting messages to individuals who have previously
adopted.
DISCONTINUANCE
• As a sequential effect, there is a possibility for “discontinuance”.
A discontinuance is a decision to reject an innovation after
having previously adopted it.
• There are two types of discontinuances:
• Replacement discontinuance – is a decision to reject an idea in
order to adopt a better idea that supersedes it.
• Disenchantment discontinuance – is a decision to reject an idea
as a result of dissatisfaction with its performance.
INNOVATIVENESS AND ADOPTER CATEGORIES
• Innovativeness is the degree to which an individual is relatively
earlier in adopting new ideas rather than other members of his
social system (Rogers, 2000).Rogers defined an adopter
category as a classification of individuals within a social system
on the basis of innovativeness.
The categories of adopters are:
• Innovators,
• Early adopters,
• Early majority,
• late majority
• laggards.
INNOVATORS
Innovators are the first individuals to adopt an innovation.
Innovators are willing to take risks, youngest in age, have the
highest social class, have great financial lucidity, very social and
have closest contact to scientific sources and interaction with other
innovators.
EARLY ADOPTERS
• This is second fastest category of individuals who adopt an
innovation. These individuals have the highest degree of opinion
leadership among the other adopter categories.
• Early adopters are typically younger in age, have a higher social
status, have more financial lucidity, advanced education, and are
more socially forward than late adopters
EARLY MAJORITY
• Individuals in this category adopt an innovation after a
varying degree of time. This time of adoption is
significantly longer than the innovators and early adopters.
• Early Majority tend to be slower in the adoption process,
have above average social status, contact with early
adopters, and show some opinion leadership.
LATE MAJORITY
• Individuals in this category will adopt an innovation after the
average member of the society. These individuals approach an
innovation with a high degree of skepticism and after the majority
of society has adopted the innovation.
• Late Majority are typically skeptical about an innovation, have
below average social status, very little financial lucidity, in contact
with others in late majority and early majority, very little opinion
leadership.
LAGGARDS
• Individuals in this category are the last to adopt an innovation.
Unlike some of the previous categories, individuals in this
category show little to no opinion leadership. These individuals
typically have an aversion to change-agents and tend to be
advanced in age.
• Laggards typically tend to be focused on “traditions”, have lowest
social status, lowest financial fluidity,oldest of all other adopters, in
contact with only family and close friends,very little to no opinion
leadership.

  • 2. ADOPTION Adoption is the decision-making process to make full use of an innovation as the best course of action available.
  • 3. DIFFUSION It is the process by which an innovation is communicated through certain channels overtime among the members of a social system.
  • 4. INNOVATION An innovation is an idea, practice or object that is perceived as new by an individual or other unit of adoption.

  • 6. DIFFUSIONS OF INNOVATION • Diffusion is the process by which an innovation is communicated through certain channels over time among the members of a social system. It is a special type of communication, in that the messages are concerned with new ideas.

  • 8. INNOVATION • An innovation is an idea, practice or object that is perceived as new by an individual or other unit of adoption. The perceived newness of the idea for the individual determines his or her reaction to it. • The newness aspect of an innovation may be expressed in terms of knowledge, persuasion or a decision to adopt.
  • 10. RELATIVE ADVANTAGE • It is the degree to which an innovation is perceived as better than the idea it supersedes. The degree of relative advantage may be measured in economic terms, but social-prestige factors, convenience and satisfaction are also often the important components. COMPATIBILITY • It is the degree to which an innovation is perceived as being consistent with the existing values, past experiences and needs of potential adopters.
  • 11. COMPLEXITY • It is the degree to which an innovation is perceived as difficult to understand and use. In general, new ideas that are simpler to understand will be adopted more rapidly than innovations that require the adopter to develop new skills and understandings. Trialability • It is the degree to which an innovation may be experimented with on a limited basis. An innovation that is trialable represents less uncertainty to the individual who is considering it for adoption, as it is possible to learn by doing.
  • 12. OBSERVABILITY • It is the degree to which the results of an innovation are visible to others. The easier it is for individuals to see the results of an innovation, the more likely they are to adopt.
  • 13. COMMUNICATION CHANNELS • A communication channel is the means by which messages get from one individual to another. The following classification of channels would help the communicator to use them appropriately.
  • 14. INTERPERSONAL CHANNELS • It refers to those which are used for face to face communication between two or more individuals.
  • 15. MASS MEDIA CHANNELS • These enable the messages to reach a larger, diverse audience simultaneously in a relatively shorter time. eg: Radio, Television etc.
  • 16. LOCALITE CHANNELS • They originate within the social system of the receiver. eg: neighbours, relatives, opinion leaders etc.,
  • 17. COSMOPOLITE CHANNELS • Cosmopolite channels are relatively more important at the knowledge stage in the innovation-decision process. • Personal cosmopolite: communication channel from outsie the social system of the receiver. eg. Extension workers, sales personnel etc. • Impersonal cosmopolite: communication channel from outside the social system of the receiver and at the same time no personal face to face contact is involved.
  • 18. TIME • It is an important element in the diffusion process. Time is an obvious aspect of any communication process. Time does not exist independently of events, but it is an aspect of every activity. The time dimension is involved in diffusion, • (i) in the innovation - decision process, • (ii) in the innovativeness of an individual or other unit of adoption, and • (iii) innovation's rate of adoption in a system.
  • 19. SOCIAL SYSTEM • It is defined as a set of interrelated units that are engaged in joint problem solving to accomplish a common goal. The members or units of a social system may be individuals, informal groups, organisations and / or subsystems. The social system constitutes a boundary within which an innovation diffuses.

CHARACTERISTICS OF PEOPLE IN MODERN SOCIAL SYSTEM • They can readily assume themselves in quite different roles. • They have positive attitude. • They value education and science. • They use and know about the advanced technology. • They emphasize on rational and ordered relationships rather than on emotional ones.
  • 22. TYPES OF INNOVATION DECISION PROCESS An individual or an organization/social system bases the type of decision on whether an innovation is adopted/rejected. The three types of innovation-decisions are: Optional innovation-decisions, Collective innovation-decisions, Authority innovation-decisions.
  • 23. Optional Innovation-Decision This decision is made by an individual who is in some way distinguished from others in a social system. Collective Innovation-Decision This decision is made collectively by all individuals of a social system. Authority Innovation-Decision This decision is made for the entire social system by few individuals inpositions of influence or power.

  • 26. KNOWLEDGE STAGE Knowledge occurs when an individual (or the decision - making unit) is exposed to the innovation's existence and gains some understanding of how it functions.
  • 27. PERSUASION STAGE • Persuasion occurs when an individual (or other decision – making unit) forms a favourable or unfavourable attitude toward the innovation. • While the mental activity as the knowledge stage was mainly cognitive (or knowing), the main type of thinking at the persuasion function is affective (or feeling). At this stage, a general perception of the innovation is developed. The individual becomes more psychologically involved with the innovation and hence he or she seeks information about the new idea.

DECISION STAGE • Decision occurs when an individual (or other decision – making unit) engages in activities that lead to a choice to adopt or reject the innovation. • Adoption is a decision to make full use of an innovation as the best course of action available. Rejection is a decision not to adopt an innovation. • The small – scale trial is often part of the decision to adopt, and is important as a means to decrease the perceived uncertainty of the innovation of the adopter.
  • 29. IMPLEMENTATION STAGE • Implementation occurs when an individual (or other decision – making unit) puts an innovation into use. Until the implementation stage, the innovation-decision process has been a strictly mental exercise. But implementation involves overt behaviour change as the new idea is actually part into practice. • Problems of implementation are likely to be more serious when the adopter is an organisation rather than an individual. Reason is that in an organisational setting, a number of individuals are usually involved in the innovation – decision process, and the implementers are often a different set of people from the decision makers.

CONFIRMATION STAGE • Confirmation occurs when an individual (or other decision – making unit) seeks reinforcement of an innovation – decision already made, but he or she may reverse this previous decision if exposed to conflicting messages about the innovation. • The confirmation stage continues after the decision to adopt or reject for an indefinite period in time. At this stage, the change agents have the additional responsibility of supporting messages to individuals who have previously adopted.
  • 31. DISCONTINUANCE • As a sequential effect, there is a possibility for “discontinuance”. A discontinuance is a decision to reject an innovation after having previously adopted it. • There are two types of discontinuances: • Replacement discontinuance – is a decision to reject an idea in order to adopt a better idea that supersedes it. • Disenchantment discontinuance – is a decision to reject an idea as a result of dissatisfaction with its performance.

  • 34. • Innovativeness is the degree to which an individual is relatively earlier in adopting new ideas rather than other members of his social system (Rogers, 2000).Rogers defined an adopter category as a classification of individuals within a social system on the basis of innovativeness. The categories of adopters are: • Innovators, • Early adopters, • Early majority, • late majority • laggards.
  • 35. INNOVATORS Innovators are the first individuals to adopt an innovation. Innovators are willing to take risks, youngest in age, have the highest social class, have great financial lucidity, very social and have closest contact to scientific sources and interaction with other innovators.
  • 36. EARLY ADOPTERS • This is second fastest category of individuals who adopt an innovation. These individuals have the highest degree of opinion leadership among the other adopter categories. • Early adopters are typically younger in age, have a higher social status, have more financial lucidity, advanced education, and are more socially forward than late adopters
  • 37. EARLY MAJORITY • Individuals in this category adopt an innovation after a varying degree of time. This time of adoption is significantly longer than the innovators and early adopters. • Early Majority tend to be slower in the adoption process, have above average social status, contact with early adopters, and show some opinion leadership.
  • 38. LATE MAJORITY • Individuals in this category will adopt an innovation after the average member of the society. These individuals approach an innovation with a high degree of skepticism and after the majority of society has adopted the innovation. • Late Majority are typically skeptical about an innovation, have below average social status, very little financial lucidity, in contact with others in late majority and early majority, very little opinion leadership.
  • 39. LAGGARDS • Individuals in this category are the last to adopt an innovation. Unlike some of the previous categories, individuals in this category show little to no opinion leadership. These individuals typically have an aversion to change-agents and tend to be advanced in age. • Laggards typically tend to be focused on “traditions”, have lowest social status, lowest financial fluidity,oldest of all other adopters, in contact with only family and close friends,very little to no opinion leadership.
