2. Fashion photography is a genre
of photography which is mainly used to display
clothing and other fashion items. Fashion
photography is most often used for
advertisements or fashion magazines such as
Vogue, Vanity Fair, or Elle.
The benefit of this type of photograph is that it
captures the beauty of those being
photographed, the location of the photograph
accentuates the whole image including
accessories.
This type of photography has a wide audience of
both male and female, young and old, increasing
the popularity of fashion photography as a
whole.
Fashion photography is a very creative method
of photography, as it demonstrates different
styles to a range of audiences, offering unique
and innovative outfit ideas. However, in fashion
photography not much experimenting takes
place with camera shots, but in editing there
may be a lot of work done on the image to
portray the idealistic view of beauty.
The term “fashion photography "describes a type
of line art photography.

3. Uses and purpose of fashion photography
The main uses of fashion photography are:
magazines, makeup and hair dye
advertisements, clothing advertisements and
promotions for festivals. This is because in
fashion photography vibrant colours are
used in order for the purpose of the
photography to be fulfilled, which is to offer
innovative and creative ideas in order to
entice the audience to buy the product or
attend the festival that is being promoted.

4. Portraiture photography is one of the commonly used forms of photography.
Portraiture photography is the art of capturing a specific subject, usually a person or a group of people.
This type of photography really captures the personality of the subject by focusing on the finer details,
such as the facial features and expressions of the people or person in the photograph, making them
appear more predominant.
When carrying out Portraiture photography there are some guidelines that need to be taken into
consideration. The most common shots that are used within this photography are: close ups, facial shots,
upper body shots and environmental portrait shots.

5. The main purpose of Portraiture photography is to capture the essence of the subject/subjects, by
successfully capturing a significant moment or milestone in a person or group of people’s lives.
Portraits are often used for special occasions such as weddings, school photos or profile images. The
reason being that they capture a true image of the individual. Hence the reason why families often use
this style to recognise and remember their family milestones and to decorate their homes.
These types of photo often focus on specific details, such as the facial features of the person or group of
people, the style of photograph is used to emphasize the emotions on an individual’s face which is why it
is often used on magazine covers , newspapers and make-up adverts.

6. Promotional/Advertising photography
This style of photography is often
used to promote a product and
brand and often includes text to
support the whole message of the
photography, often using persuasive
language or memorable slogans.
The scale of the image in this style of
photography is sometimes increased,
represented as larger than life in
order to make the product the main
focus.

7. Uses and purposes of Promotional/
advertising photography
This style of photography is often used for
promotional purposes of products or
brands, used in the form of advertisements
in magazine and newspapers, on billboards
and leaflets.
Another purpose of this style of
photography is to persuade/ encourage the
audience to make a purchase whether it be
for a product or service.

8. Documentary photography
Documentary photography usually refers to a
popular form of photography used to chronicle
events or environments both significant and
relevant to history and historical events as well as
everyday life.
This style of photography provides a
straightforward and accurate representation of
people, places, objects and events, and is often
used in reportage.
Documentary photography could be considered as
the most realistic style of photography as it
captures a raw representation of the subject.

9. Uses and purpose of documentary
photography
The main purpose of documentary photography is to
follow a single topic in depth over time. By deepening
our understanding and emotional connection to stories
of injustice, documentary photography can capture and
sustain public attention, and mobilize people around
pressing social and human rights issues.
Documentary photography is mainly used to highlight
sensitive topics. For example this type of photography is
used in history books , newspapers, documentaries and
charity campaigns. Subjects may include mental health,
racism, class and politics.
Documentary photography follows a highly natural
style, capturing the true intensity of a situation. In order
to achieve this style minimal equipment is used and not
much editing takes place after shooting.
