2. The Importance of Photography
Photography is often used to inform, educate, entertain and promote a wide variety of
areas. Photographs are also a way for some photographers to express emotions that
they feel need to be felt by others. The particular areas I will cover are:
Fine Art PhotographyMusic Photography
3. Music Photography
Music Photography is a branch of photography that specialises in
concert based photographs.
A music photographer would be classed as a freelancer and is usually
hired by a particular Artist's company or festival officials, and paid a set
amount to create memorabilia/colourful and vivid photography.
The photography produced may encourage others to attend said events
in the following years.
What is the purpose of their
photography?
Music Photographers usually aim to
promote and entertain as this helps bring
attention to the events they cover.
Where are their photographs used?
The photographs may be used in a
magazine of that genre or on various
social media websites. They may also be
collected by loyal fans of the artist to help
preserve the moment.
How do the photographs affect the
viewer?
The photographs may bring mixed
feelings of nostalgia and euphoria to the
viewer. In turn, this may motivate them
to want to see the artist live again.
4. Rukes is one of the most
popular and creative music
photographers around. His
extreme wide shots and
breath-taking fish eye shots
are really what makes his
work second to none.
Rukes
After working with
Deadmau5 and gaining
popularity, he has since
worked with such names as
Afrojack, Kaskade, Avicii,
Skrillex and Swedish
House Mafia.
5. Full Frame
Everything in the shot is visible
and in focus. This helps the
audience to feel the
atmosphere of the concert
through the picture.
Subject
Seeing as the DJ is centred,
we know that he is the subject
of this photograph.
Vantage Point
The Photographer has chosen
to an angle where he is almost
at eye level with the Dj, but
slightly above the audience.
Lens
Rukes has opted for a fish-eye
lens in this particular shot
which really helps encapsulate
the mood of the performance.
Depth of Field
There is almost no negative
space in the photograph
which really brings the
background and foreground
into a rich focus.
6. Texture
The detail in this photograph
really brings out each
individual in the crowd.
Vantage Point
Rukes has decided to go for a
top-down view of the concert
as this allows the viewer to
really absorb the photograph.
Highlight (or Catch Light)
Because this is all indoors,
natural lighting would be
impossible. The light is
focused on the centre of the
crowd in this shot.
Shape
This photograph has an oval
shape as our eyes are
immediately drawn to the
shape of the crowd and then
work around to the slightly
negative parts of the frame.
Exposure
The photo isn’t light-intensive
and Rukes has allowed for
some slight negative space to
the left and right of the frame
to emphasis the centre of the
shot.
7. Fine Art Photography
Fine Art Photography is a branch of photography that specialises in the photographer and their vision rather than
mainstream subjective photography. Fine Art Photographers are influenced by everything around them. Famous Fine Art
Photographers will develop and produce exhibitions where people can come to view their photographs. There is often
certain themes with each exhibition. The photographer makes money from selling their photographs (commission) or
allowing their photographs to be used in newspapers/magazines and collecting royalties from said papers or magazines.
What is the purpose of their
photography?
Fine Art Photographers are all very different
and so are their photograph's purposes.
They'll often want to explore hard hitting
subjects from such things as what is and isn't
politically correct to consumerism. Because
Fine Art Photographers work almost
religiously under the mantra that they're being
objective and not subjective, they'll aim to
convey what they believe to be a hidden truth
rather than leaving up to the viewer's
decision.
Where are their photographs used?
As previously mentioned, the photographer
makes money from selling their
photographs (commission) or allowing their
photographs to be used in
newspapers/magazines and collecting
royalties from said papers or magazines.
How do the photographs affect the

As previously mentioned, the photographer

8. Gregory Crewdson
Gregory Crewdson specialises in a very specific style of Fine Art Photography; tableaux of American homes and
Neighbourhoods. He's admitted that he's heavily inspired by some cult classics such as Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo and
Steven Spielberg's Close Encounters of the Third Kind. His inspirations are heavily reflected in his work.
9. Colour & Lighting
Because of the rain and
overall negative colouring,
the photograph comes
across as quite bleak and
depressing.
Angle & Vantage Point
Crewdson has chosen a wide
angle for this particular photo
to show the isolation of the
subject.
Composition
The shot chosen allows the
audience to choose their own
narrative as there are so many
different elements in this shot.
Spacing
The background has been
obscured by the rain so as
to give it the effect of
continuation.
Theme
After being heavily inspired by sci-fi
movies when growing up, Crewdson
made a series of photographs entitled
‘Mystery in Everyday Life’.
10. Representational and
Representing features
A Fine Art Photographer’s
work is usually quite objective
towards his or her viewpoint,
but this particular piece could
cover many different aspects
of life depending on the
disposition of the viewer.
Layers
In this photograph the
foreground has very little
detail whereas the
background is where the
subject lies (through the
window).
Shape
I would say that this
photograph is quite triangular
as the viewer's eyes are first
drawn to the subject and the
baby, then to either the car or
through the door.
Highlight
There is a light source coming
from (what we presume to be)
a street light and also through
the bathroom and bedroom.
There’s no natural lighting
used in this photograph.
11. Comparison and Critical Evaluation
A similarity that Fine Art Photography and Music Photography have is that they’re both about capturing the moment.
Even having said this, I feel that Fine Art Photography is so rich in detail and usually quite bold in the statements that each Fine Art Photographer is
trying to make. This is the reason why fine art is my preference.
Music Photographers focus on having a wide variety of shots in their arsenal of photographs, whereas a Fine Art Photographer’s focus is that one
particular shot.
That one shot that really makes the viewer’s eyes wonder and allows their creativity to run wild. Both types of photography take a lot of preparation
but Fine Art Photography (when done correctly) is truly a thing of beauty.
In conclusion, I believe that each photographic area is equally as important as they help us all grow creatively as a society and can provide a
surreal and definitive approach to the art of taking pictures.
