Editor's Notes
Plankton does not mean small, however the largest mass movement in the ocean is by microscopic plankton.
Some plankton, such as Lions Main jellyfish can grow to over six feet tall and weigh 300 Lbs! Planktos is derived from the Greek language, and it means drifter or wanderer. This tells us that plankton are organisms that drift rather than swim, with exception of dinoflagellates who use flagella but by no means are able to use them to swim against the current. By relying on the motions of a body of water, stimulated by energy driven winds, Plankton are able to move freely throughout
Phytoplankton – photosynthesis
Zooplankton – animal like
Icthyoplankton – fish
Bacterialplanton
Phytoplankton begin the food chain by using light and nutrients to thrive, later becoming food for zooplankton. These plankton are then consumed by small fish which sharks and other large marine life eat.
In an attempt to avoid predators plankton migrate to the unlit zones of the ocean and return to the surface at dusk to feed on nutrient rich waters. Their migration patterns not only rely on avoiding predation and obtaining the required nutrients in an attempt to survive, but also rely on season…..
Phytoplankton begin the food chain by using light and nutrients to thrive
During warmer months, usually May through August or September, when surface temperatures are warm the thermocline prevents nutrients from rising to the photosynthetic sunlit surface areas. Like that of oil and vinegar they can not mix.
In the Spring, usually May, the thermocline begins to settle once again, forcing nutrients to remain below….
In early winter, when temperatures begin to cool, surface water temperatures in temperate regions eventually find middle ground and become the same temperature, disposing of the nutrient limitation indicator, the thermocline. Once Winter has finally conquered its vernal rival, deep ocean temperatures and surface temperatures agree to find common ground and allow deep water nutrients to surface and are eventually churned upward from winter storms.
Nutrient run off but mostly organic material from dead and decaying matter supplies nutrients for plankton
