What do landscapes include?
• Landscape comprises the visible features
of an area of land:
• the physical elements of landforms
such as (ice-capped)mountains, hills,
• water bodies such as
rivers, lakes, ponds and the sea
• living elements of land cover including
indigenous vegetation and animals
• human elements including different
forms of land use, buildings and
structures,
• transitory elements such as lighting
and weather conditions

why do we like landscapes?

• no matter what time period, no matter
the culture – landscapes have always
been important
• we are drawn to landscapes
2. environment and natural selection
• Denis Dutton, an evolutionary biologist
and psychologist, believes that the
reason people appreciate landscapes is
because it is important for survival
• most landscapes, again no matter the
culture or time period, have: green areas,
trees, and water – all necessary for
survival
