World Product Day 2019 / Product Tank HCMC #9: How to advocate product manage...Amanda Lam
Product Management is relatively new and unfamiliar to many company stakeholders. It has never been a major in colleges, and many people often have misconceptions that Product Managers = Project Managers, or holding a belief that digital Product Managers are just doing "IT".
Arguably, proper Product Management is vital to the longer-term sustainability of most companies. While visionary leaders with product-focused mindset are rare; we shall rely on no others but ourselves to pitch and convince upper management and key stakeholders the necessity to invest time and money into Product Management.
In this talk, we will discuss about:
- how Product Management practices can fit into the context of company strategy
- the key values that Product team drives and delivers to both external (clients / users) and internal (other departments) environments
- the processes that facilitate development of market-responsive products
There is no single formula of success, and each company should adjust and adopt its own unique ways to set up its Product team and strategy according to their talent mixes, business priority, stage of growth and competitive landscape. As such, we anticipate active dialogue and discussions among us so that we can learn our experiences from each other!
Tom Lucas gave this presentation at the Eastern Innovation Business Centre for small businesses and start ups, however the content is equally relevant to any business considering a mobile app in their digital strategy, from small to large enterprises.

“My future mistake: What ignoring voice UI in my product roadmap did to our c...ProductTank TLV
In 2020 we had to shut down our product operation.
Why? Voice became 50% of the market, but only 10% of our roadmap was dedicated to it.
Our savvy users couldn't talk to us anymore, we were literally speechless.
In this session, Ariel will talk about his "future failure": “As a product manager from the GUI era, I failed to focus our product on the voice experience that became 50% of the market (back in 2020 ;)). Our product/market fit collapsed in 12 months. We tried to fix it with more features and not by looking on the market and enhancing the visual aspect with the vocal experience”.
In this ‘how to plan your products’ talk Ariel shared his thoughts regarding future failures, and will share his strategy and tips on how to best prepare to them.
These slides talk about how we have evolved the way to work with the Product Roadmap in regards to the internal and external changes that made lastminute.com group keep growing.

How UX Can Drive the Vision of Future Products - Arttu NiskasaariUXPA International
Our existing B2B product has been developed for 15 years and the need for complete redesign was acknowledged in 2013.
Unusual for the software business in our country and field of business, this project for the brand new solution was driven by UX from the beginning. The main target was to introduce new level of collaboration between all company functions to formulate a shared vision for the future product.
It took us one year to move from user research to prototypes, and in the meantime our UX team grew from two to six persons. Hence, we will also talk a bit about organizing the work of the team to support several products and projects without sacrificing the long-term project.
In this session we will share our experiences and lessons-learned from working our way towards that vision with research based top-down approach.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
