A relevant issue in Remote Sensing (RS) and GIS is related to the analysis and the characterization of Land Use Land Cover (LULC) changes, very useful for a wide range of environmental applications and to efficiently undertake landscape planning and management policies. The methodology described has been applied to a case-study conducted in the area of the Province of Avellino (Southern Italy). Firstly, aerial photos and Landsat imagery have been classified to produce LULC maps for a fifty-year period (1954÷2004). Then, through a GIS approach, change detection and spatiotemporal analysis has been integrated to characterize LULC dynamics, focusing on the urban-rural gradient. This study has shown that LULC patterns and their changes are linked to both natural and social processes whose driving role has been clearly demonstrated: after the disastrous Irpinia earthquake (1980), local specific zoning laws and urban plans have significantly addressed landscape changes.

Multi-Query Path Planning for Exploration Tasks with an Unmanned Rotorcraft
This paper presents an online multi-query path planner for exploration tasks planned onboard an unmanned helicopter. While the desirable properties of roadmaps can be exploited in offline path planning, the dynamic nature of exploration scenarios hinders to utilize conventional roadmap planners. Hence, the presented path planning approach utilizes a deterministically sampled roadmap which is dynamically indexed in real time. To address situations of partial terrain knowledge, the roadmap can be extended from its a priori dimensions towards locations of unknown terrain that are outside its original, a priori boundaries. The multi-query property of the planning system allows for combinatorial optimization such that a rapidly acting decisional autonomy is achievable during exploration flights. D*-Lite is used as dynamic heuristic path searcher in order to re-plan efficiently. Inspired by the original work on this path search algorithm, the roadmap graph is augmented with an exploration vertex which steers the exploration behavior of the vehicle. As a result, the presented roadmap guides an unmanned rotorcraft through a priori unknown urban terrain in real time.

The challenge has been to design value-added mapping products and standardized procedure to derive objective environmental indicators, useful for the decision-making process. Preciso® Land is appreciated as the most promising source for the derivation of an important territory indicator: the Soil Loss Index.

Green Score Capital, a startup created in October 2019 and supported by the European Space Agency, is developing an expert system assessing the biodiversity and carbon footprints of their customers' activities and products by combining their own data with external data. The biodiversity impact of an activity is directly related to its location on the globe and the characteristics of the local habitats.
In this presentation, we'll describe how we use FME to compute several indicators that are directly relevant to the evaluation of the footprint on biodiversity. This computation leverages the WorldCover dataset, a worldwide land cover dataset funded by ESA and based on Copernicus Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 data. It also uses the ""Landscape Metrics"" R package through the RCaller transformer.
Finally, we'll show how we are able to automatize the process on a large scale using an Automation on an ""Entreprise"" FME Cloud instance.

EPANET in gvSIG

Digital land use data and spatial planning data standardized according to INSPIRE can significantly contribute to sustainable land development, environmental protection, efficient resource management, and prevention of biodiversity loss. In France, a prototype was created to transform land use and spatial planning data into INSPIRE compliant formats using XML and web services. While progress has been made, fully implementing INSPIRE across all local governments in France remains a challenge.

The EUXDAT project, which received Horizon 2020 funding, has come to an end after three years of collaboration and development. The project developed an e-infrastructure platform to address UN Sustainable Development Goals and the European Green Deal. Key deliverables of the project included the final specification of the infrastructure platform (D4.5), definition of three pilots and scenarios (D5.6), description of the end users' platform (End Users’ Platform v3), and description of the infrastructure platform and services (D4.6, D5.7). Webinars were held in October 2020 to present results of the pilots and infrastructure.

Collect earth & earth map
This document summarizes Collect Earth, a data collection tool integrated with Google Earth that provides free access to very high resolution satellite imagery. It allows users to analyze multi-temporal imagery over 40 years from satellites like Landsat, Sentinel-1, and MODIS. Data is linked between Google Earth Engine, OpenForis, and Saiku for geospatial analysis and data quality control. Collect Earth has been used for agricultural monitoring, socioeconomic data collection, deforestation assessment, forest inventories, and land use change analysis by FAO and partner countries. A new FAO-Google tool called Earth Map provides a simplified interface for historical land cover analysis to support project design, monitoring, and evaluation.

Green Score Capital, a startup created in October 2019 and supported by the European Space Agency, is developing an expert system assessing the biodiversity and carbon footprints of their customers' activities and products by combining their own data with external data. The biodiversity impact of an activity is directly related to its location on the globe and the characteristics of the local habitats.
In this presentation, we'll describe how we use FME to compute several indicators that are directly relevant to the evaluation of the footprint on biodiversity. This computation leverages the WorldCover dataset, a worldwide land cover dataset funded by ESA and based on Copernicus Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 data. It also uses the ""Landscape Metrics"" R package through the RCaller transformer.
Finally, we'll show how we are able to automatize the process on a large scale using an Automation on an ""Entreprise"" FME Cloud instance.

EPANET in gvSIG

This webinar covers three emerging themes in life science publishing, which will begin to influence the way in which the agricultural researchers share and access knowledge:
Faster dissemination: Publishing scientific articles is often a lengthy process, taking several months or even years from first submission. This prevents the research community and others from being able to act on new knowledge quickly, which is especially serious in emergency situations such as emerging infectious diseases. This webinar will cover two ways of tackling publication delays: preprint servers and post-publication peer review platforms.
Increased access & transparency: Open Access has helped remove access barriers to a vast body of scientific knowledge. Other important research outputs that have historically been difficult to access are starting to be published more frequently such as replications, data, code and referee reports.
Assessment of research: Researches are assessed by their publication record. Journal title and Impact Factor tend to be the default assessment criteria, though there is growing awareness of the disadvantages of these approaches, and alternative measures of quality and impact are gaining ground.

With more and more thesauri, classifications and other knowledge organization systems being published as Linked Data using SKOS, the question arises how best to make them available on the web. While just publishing the Linked Data triples is possible using a number of RDF publishing tools, those tools are not very well suited for SKOS data, because they cannot support term-based searching and lookup.
This webinar presents Skosmos, an open source web-based SKOS vocabulary browser that uses a SPARQL endpoint as its backend. It can be used by e.g. libraries and archives as a publishing platform for controlled vocabularies such as thesauri, lightweight ontologies, classifications and authority files. The Finnish national thesaurus and ontology service Finto, operated by the National Library of Finland, is built using Skosmos.
Skosmos provides a multilingual user interface for browsing and searching the data and for visualizing concept hierarchies. The user interface has been developed by analyzing the results of repeated usability tests. All of the SKOS data is made available as Linked Data. A developer-friendly REST API is also available providing access for using vocabularies in other applications such as annotation systems.
We will describe what kind of infrastructure is necessary for Skosmos and how to set it up for your own SKOS data. We will also present examples where Skosmos is being used around the world.
