Detention Procedure Ms. Mercer Fifth Grade Nicholas Elementary
Why do we have detention? We need to follow our class and school rules for learning to take place. We need to have consequences when rules are broken. If someone is stopping learning, they may need to leave the class so that others can learn.
What is detention? Time out from regular activities. A consequence for breaking a rule. A time to reflect on behavior.
When and where is detention? During recess: On the bench by the cafeteria during a.m. recess; In the detention class during lunch. During class: In a buddy classroom; In the opportunity room.
What is the procedure? The teacher will send you to the detention.  You will be told where to go, how long to stay, and what detention form to take. If you have unfinished work, or are in the middle of doing classwork, bring it with you to finish.
What type of form. . . If you are sent out without work, for an amount of time, or until a time, take an  Endless Essay . If you have unfinished work, or are in the middle of doing classwork, and are supposed to return when it is done, take a  Why I’m in Detention  form.
Endless Essay For an  Endless Essay  you will write on a topic related to the rule you have broken until your time is up. You will write continuously for the entire period of your detention without stopping. If you stop, you will be assigned more detention time.
Why I’m in Detention form First, you will finish your work; Then answer the questions about the problem you had, and Try to figure out how to resolve the problem, or What better choices you can make in the future.
Going to the detention area or room Go quickly and quietly, do not waste time. If you are going to a class do not stop learning, come in quietly. Do not talk to others while you are on detention. Do your assignment (classwork, homework, detention form).
Leaving the detention area or room Let the teacher or monitor know you have finished your detention terms. If they ask to review your work, show it to them. Leave and return to your class, quickly and silently.
The Detention Monitor You are responsible for keeping track of detainees during recess or lunch detention. You are responsible for giving the lunch detention teacher the list of students on detention, and any detention forms that are needed. You then report back to the teacher who reported for detention.
