2. Being Prepared for Class You need to have all of your required materials for class on a daily basis. If you do not have a pencil, you can purchase one from the teacher for 25 cents, or spend one lunch detention “working it off” by cleaning the classroom. Let me know you need a pencil by holding up your pointer finger. All classwork must be done in pencil. If you do not bring your notebook to class, you will be given a few sheets of paper for the class period, but will serve a lunch detention for not being prepared.

4. Filing Because it is important to be respectful of classes that are in session when we are filing, you are expected to walk from class to class quietly , and in a single-file line. Failure to do so will result in having to practice filing at specialty, lunch, and after school.

5. Quiet, Polite, and To the Right

6. Entering the Classroom You are expected to wait outside the classroom door in a quiet, single-file line until I welcome you into the room. Do not enter until I invite you in. No students are allowed in the room when an adult is not present.

7. Do Now and Objective Once you enter the classroom door, you will immediately go to your seats, take out your notebook and a pencil. You will have five minutes to copy down the objective and complete the Do Now. The Do Now must be completed silently. No questions during the Do Now!

9. Homework Before the Do Now, take out your homework and place it on the corner of your desk. I will go around to check homework during the Do Now. Any student who does not have their homework out during the Do Now will not receive a stamp. Students who are late to class will also not receive a stamp. In order to get a stamp, you must complete the homework fully. Incomplete homework does not get stamped. Students who miss more than 2 assignments on a homework log will receive a phone call home.

10. Getting Your Attention When I need your attention, I will say, “Please give me your attention in 5-4-3-2-1.” By the time I count to 1, you need to be quiet and focused on me so that I can give you the information you need to continue working.

11. Getting Up During Class You must raise your hands and ask for permission before getting out of your seats. If you want to sharpen your pencil, raise your pencil in the air. If you want to get water, hold up three fingers making a “W”. If you want to go to the bathroom, hold up an “O”. If you need to see the nurse, hold up two fingers. Only one student can be out of his/her seat at a time. If you see someone up, or see that the pass is not by the door, please don’t ask to get up or leave.

Leaving the Room You may not leave the room during the first fifteen minutes or last fifteen minutes of class, and there may be times when I ask you to wait a few minutes so that you don’t miss out on important information. Only one student may leave the room at a time, and a student may only leave the room once during a class period. No students will be given a pass to the bathroom before 10:45 a.m., or after 3:00 p.m.

14. What Classwork Looks Like The amount of talking you are allowed to do in class depends on the kind of work we are doing. Independent Work- No talking whatsoever. If you have a question, raise your hand and I will come to help you when I’m able to. Partnerwork or Groupwork- Talk a lot about classwork, but only with your partner or group members. If you need help, don’t call out, just raise your hand and wait for me to come over.

Talking During Class, Continued Class Discussion- There are three ways we will conduct class discussions: Raised Hands- When you have a question, or when I say that we’re going to talk using “raised hands”, you should raise your hand and wait until I call on you before speaking. Calling Sticks -Sometimes I will use calling sticks to call on students at random. Be ready to answer at all times—you will be expected to have an answer! Hackey Sack -When we are summarizing at the end of class, I will ask a question and then throw a hackey sack to you. You can try to answer the question, or say you don’t know, after which you should pass the hackey sack back to me.

17. Passing Out Papers I will pass a stack of papers to each row. At the end of the row, any extra papers should be passed forward for me to collect them.

18. Passing In Papers You will pass your papers to the person sitting to your left . Once the paper reaches the last person in the row, that person will pass the stack of papers forward. The person sitting closest to my desk will put all of the papers in your class’s box. Make-up work or late work that needs to be turned in should be put in your class’ box. Notes from home, recommendation forms, or written questions or concerns should be placed in the basket on my desk labeled “Teacher’s Mailbox.”

20. Show What You Know At the end of class, I will put a “Show What You Know” question up on the screen. You are responsible for re-stating and answering this question on your weekly SWYK paper. This paper will be collected as a classwork grade every Friday.

21. Writing Down Homework During the last five minutes of class, I will put the homework on the screen for you to copy down in your homework logs. You must copy down the homework and get it checked off in order to leave class! All homework must be done in pencil, and will be graded on effort .

23. Exiting The Classroom At the end of the class, I will dismiss you. At that time, students who have cleaned up their area, packed up their things, and are sitting quietly will be dismissed first.

24. Tardies, Absences, Late Work If you are late to class, you will not get a stamp for the homework that day. Late means entering the room after I’ve started the timer for the Do Now. If you miss class, you must get the work you missed from the Missing Work board. You have one week to complete missed assignments. If you need help, stay after school to get it. After that week ends, you will receive a zero for any missing work.

25. Chewing Gum, Writing on Desks, Throwing Things Don’t do it. If you are caught chewing, you will scrape gum off the bottoms of desks. If you write on desks, you will clean desks, with heavy chemicals if necessary. If you throw things, you will sweep and mop the floor. Consider yourself warned.

27. Tests and Projects Students who earn a D or F on unit tests or projects will be expected to stay after school, get help with the material, and re-take the test or re-do the project. No one should accept a failing grade! You’re all capable of better!

28. Electronics Bringing electronics into the classroom is a violation of Boston Public Schools policy. If I SEE or HEAR iPods, cell phones, or gaming devices in class, I will take them, and your parent will have to come in to get them back from an administrator. No exceptions.

30. Good Stuff You can also lose points if you… Talk during the Do Now or Show What You Know. Call out. Are not following directions. Are disrupting class. You can always earn back points if you go back to doing the right thing!

31. Why are Good Stuff points good? Your Grade: Good stuff points will be used as part of your classwork grade. Classwork is 30% of your overall grade. Every week, you will be expected to earn at least 30 Good Stuff points. If you earn more than that, it’s extra credit. If you earn less, you grade goes down.
