How to use your data science team: Becoming a data-driven organizationYael Garten
Talk given at Strata Hadoop World conference March 2016.
http://conferences.oreilly.com/strata/hadoop-big-data-ca/public/schedule/detail/48305
In this talk we review the culture, process and tools needed for a data driven organization. We review an example of how companies like LinkedIn use data to make business decisions, and then walk through the culture, process, and tools needed to foster this. We review the spectrum of data science used within an organization and explore organizational needs, such as the democratization of data via self-serve data platforms for experimentation, monitoring, and data exploration, as well as the challenges that come with such systems. Participants leave this session with the ability to identify opportunities for data scientists to contribute within their organization and with an understanding of what investments are needed to drive transformation into a data-driven organization.
When it comes to design, everyone has an opinion! However, during reviews and discussions it’s those with more than an opinion that fair the best. Successful design solutions require a deep understanding of audiences, clear strategy, and good ole data.
In this session you’ll learn:
- common data sources for design,
- how to build a data-informed approach,
- what data-informed design looks like in the wild (aka case studies).
Whether you’re trying to prove a point, make an improvement, or discover something new, data-informed design moves your team from gut-feelings to fact-based decisions.

Which is the primary key which unlocks the value of the Big Data? In a world awash with data, I argue in this presentation that narratives play a crucial role in making sense of the information. I look at the role of narratives in the data-scarce paradigm and look at some familiar consulting narratives. I then examine the implications of such narratives and look at how these narratives would change in the emerging data-ubiquity paradigm
In this webinar, Looker CEO, Frank Bien hosts a panel of BI experts including Cigna, Blue Apron and BuzzFeed, to discuss what he calls the “3rd Wave of BI”, and how you can ride it to win.
During the 1st wave of BI everyone had to wait for data and the insights they needed. The introduction of data visualization in the 2nd wave made it easy for anyone to grab data from anywhere and do it themselves. Today’s 3rd Wave of BI creates a common data language for your business, making it easy for anyone to find, explore and do more with data.
Don’t miss this rare opportunity to hear Frank Bien chat with a panel of BI experts to help you:
- Understand the current shift in BI tech
- Utilize 3rd wave trends in every aspect of your business

It Takes A Village: Organizational Alignment to Deliver Big Data Analytics in...Andy Ashta
The business and technology teams within a health insurer must align the company's central data platform with its data strategy. That requires substantial organizational alignment. Hear the firsthand perspective from Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC), the largest customer owned health insurance company in the United States. The speaker will cover how they integrated membership information, regulatory compliance, and the general ledger, to improve overall healthcare management. At HCSC, the strong alignment between executive leadership, business portfolio direction, architectural strategy, technology delivery, and program management have helped create leading-edge capabilities which help the company respond nimbly to a quickly evolving healthcare industry.
The recent focus on Big Data in the data management community brings with it a paradigm shift—from the more traditional top-down, “design then build” approach to data warehousing and business intelligence, to the more bottom up, “discover and analyze” approach to analytics with Big Data. Where does data modeling fit in this new world of Big Data? Does it go away, or can it evolve to meet the emerging needs of these exciting new technologies? Join this webinar to discuss:

Data-Ed Slides: Data-Centric Strategy & Roadmap - Supercharging Your BusinessDATAVERSITY
In many organizations and functional areas, data has pulled even with money in terms of what makes the proverbial world go ‘round. As businesses struggle to cope with the 21st century’s newfound data flood, it is more important than ever before to prioritize data as an asset that directly supports business imperatives. However, while organizations across most industries make some attempt to address data opportunities (e.g. Big Data) and data challenges (e.g. data quality), the results of these efforts frequently fall far below expectations. At the root of many of these failures is poor organizational data management—which fortunately is a remediable problem.
This webinar will cover three lessons, each illustrated with examples, that will help you establish realistic goals and benchmarks for data management processes and communicate their value to both internal and external decision makers:
- How organizational thinking must change to include value-added data management practices
- The importance of walking before you run with data-focused initiatives
- Prioritizing specification and data governance over “silver bullet” analytical tools
Data Architecture Strategies: The Rise of the Graph DatabaseDATAVERSITY

Climate Science Flows: Enabling Petabyte-Scale Climate Analysis with the Eart...Globus
The Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) is a global network of data servers that archives and distributes the planet’s largest collection of Earth system model output for thousands of climate and environmental scientists worldwide. Many of these petabyte-scale data archives are located in proximity to large high-performance computing (HPC) or cloud computing resources, but the primary workflow for data users consists of transferring data, and applying computations on a different system. As a part of the ESGF 2.0 US project (funded by the United States Department of Energy Office of Science), we developed pre-defined data workflows, which can be run on-demand, capable of applying many data reduction and data analysis to the large ESGF data archives, transferring only the resultant analysis (ex. visualizations, smaller data files). In this talk, we will showcase a few of these workflows, highlighting how Globus Flows can be used for petabyte-scale climate analysis.

In software engineering, the right architecture is essential for robust, scalable platforms. Wix has undergone a pivotal shift from event sourcing to a CRUD-based model for its microservices. This talk will chart the course of this pivotal journey.
Event sourcing, which records state changes as immutable events, provided robust auditing and "time travel" debugging for Wix Stores' microservices. Despite its benefits, the complexity it introduced in state management slowed development. Wix responded by adopting a simpler, unified CRUD model. This talk will explore the challenges of event sourcing and the advantages of Wix's new "CRUD on steroids" approach, which streamlines API integration and domain event management while preserving data integrity and system resilience.
Participants will gain valuable insights into Wix's strategies for ensuring atomicity in database updates and event production, as well as caching, materialization, and performance optimization techniques within a distributed system.
Join us to discover how Wix has mastered the art of balancing simplicity and extensibility, and learn how the re-adoption of the modest CRUD has turbocharged their development velocity, resilience, and scalability in a high-growth environment.
Code reviews are vital for ensuring good code quality. They serve as one of our last lines of defense against bugs and subpar code reaching production.
Yet, they often turn into annoying tasks riddled with frustration, hostility, unclear feedback and lack of standards. How can we improve this crucial process?
In this session we will cover:
- The Art of Effective Code Reviews
- Streamlining the Review Process
- Elevating Reviews with Automated Tools
By the end of this presentation, you'll have the knowledge on how to organize and improve your code review proces
