As presented on October 6, 2015 at HOW Interactive Design Conference in Chicago.
NPR One is a personalized audio experience designed to be heard. If we are doing our job well, then you likely aren’t even looking at your device. But being out-of-sight creates a unique set of constraints for building a mobile app. How do we craft an experience for that is audio-first? How do we design interfaces that are simple, content-first, and easy-to-understand, even if they're only used once in awhile? And how does the team work to evolve the experience and add new features while avoiding bloat and retaining the focus that is the hallmark of the app?
In this session, l'll discuss the evolution of NPR’s new digital radio platform, from inception to obstacles to examples of interactions built for listening. I'll talk about team dynamics and process, user research and A/B test findings, and delve into the paths not taken. Ultimately, you'll be able to learn from our successes and missteps as we continue to build the ultimate audio news and storytelling experience.

Agile design thinking and you... ux australia2011Jason Furnell
Agile is changing the way we create software. Design, and Design Thinking, is becoming pivotal to business success. The UX game is changing, and you need to step up!
Daniel Oertli (CIO, REA Group) and Jason Furnell (Experience Design consultant, ThoughtWorks) will discuss the changing role of UX in fast moving, Agile development environments, presenting case studies demonstrating the impact that a design-led approach has had at Australia’s No.1 real estate site (www.realestate.com.au).
This talk will present concepts that will challenge your thinking and introduce you to new methods that will increase your impact as a designer working on software and business strategy projects.
The Agile development methodology dramatically changes the role of designers: the build is the design. Agile concepts like ‘working software over comprehensive documentation’ and the disciplines of ‘just enough’ and ‘just in time’, mean that traditional, heavy weight specification documentation is no longer effective – or even possible.
Practitioners need to find ways to ‘power up’ their design impact. Jason and Daniel will discuss how to use collaborative design as a ‘force multiplier’, share the experience of designing in real-time, and show you how to let go, be fearless and take your team with you on a journey that builds trust, buy-in and design momentum.
They will challenge you to shift your focus; to make the transition to design thinking, and focus on design facilitation in order to increase the scale and complexity of the things you design.
Lights! Camera! Interaction! What Designers Can Learn From FilmmakersAdam Connor
I began college as a film student. I’ve always loved storytelling, particularly visual storytelling in the forms of film and animation. Well-made films show us that they can drive engagement, communicate in subtle ways, change attitudes, and inspire us to try to change our lives.
Films succeed in evoking responses and engaging audiences only with a combination of well-written narrative and effective storytelling technique. It’s the filmmaker’s job to put this together. To do so they’ve developed processes, tools and techniques that allow them to focus attention, emphasize information, foreshadow and produce the many elements that together comprise a well-told story.
We’re responsible for creating products that aren’t just easy to use, but that people appreciate using. It stands to reason that the methods used in films to communicate with and engage audiences can serve as inspiration for designers.
With this presentation, we'’ll revisit the topic of using stories in design and expand on the technical aspects used in film to communicate. We’ll look at some tools used in film such as: cinematic patterns, beat sheets, and storyboards. We’ll consider why they’re used and how we might look to them for inspiration.
Presented at the IA Summit on April 24, 2015.
For years, REI.com’s global navigation existed in a relatively stable equilibrium. It balanced the need to sell products and services, provide access to educational content, and inform visitors about unique aspects of the company. But a recent agency-led redesign threatened to disrupt this stability. Suddenly, a whole host of assumptions around the proper role of site-wide navigation were exposed. As REI’s in-house IA, I had a front row seat to watch merchants, marketers, designers, and business managers wrangle over their competing expectations of REI’s global nav. My job was to influence opinion and try to restore a healthy balance in the navigation while still supporting a new design direction for the site.
This talk will be a case study of the unexpected political struggles that were revealed during the design process. I’ll attempt to fairly portray the full range of perspectives on global navigation, from customers to business owners, from agency designers to in-house designers, from accepted practice to emerging trends. I’ll talk as candidly as I can about the discussions that took place throughout the redesign process, and where we landed on some fundamental questions about navigation: Who should we design for? Who should care about the global nav? And, particularly, what is IA’s role in the creative process? In short, when politics enter the design studio, who wins?
As presented on February 9, 2015 at Interaction 15 in San Francisco.

A mission is that which gives us purpose. In movies and books, the entire plot generally centers around the protagonist's mission. In real life, however, we often limit our understanding of "mission-driven" work to charities and non-profits. In reality, every designer can seize the opportunity to do work with greater meaning.
This talk is a practical guide to defining and understanding the mission that your work serves, whether you design for a tiny non-profit or the largest technology company. We'll look at successful examples of mission-driven design from both the non-profit and commercial sectors, and discuss methods for infusing this perspective into your own work. Ultimately, this session will give you the tools to become more purposeful
in everything that you design.

The Digital Media Design team at NPR strives to design experiences that meet listeners and readers across the all places they are now and will be in the future—websites, smartphones, tablets, connected cars, connected homes, wearables, and more.
Over the past several years, the team has launched and iterated on NPR One—NPR’s personalized, on-demand listening service—on over a dozen platforms. At the same time, we’ve redesigned large swaths of NPR.org, entirely rebuilt the web audio player, created essential internal editorial tools, and embarked on a ground-up rebuilt of the flagship NPR mobile app. Through all these projects, maintaining a consistent, shared vision of how we reach audiences and serve journalism has been essential.
In this presentation, I'll discuss three keys to successful platform and product design at NPR—audience-centric research & design processes, service to journalists, and partnership with local stations. I'll explore how these key themes impact our work and share the lessons we’ve learned in designing products that scale while meeting the needs of each of these core constituencies.

Demand Attention Now: Create Your Visual Moment of Truth prnewswire
Search and social has empowered consumers to conduct in-depth research about the products they want most before they buy. The point at which a consumer chooses a brand, where to buy, and with whom they share the results is what Google calls "The Zero Moment of Truth." Now, it is up to communicators to join the conversation at this new moment where decisions are made to provide the content that buyers look for in the formats that attract them most powerfully. PR Newswire's Global Director of Emerging Media, Michael Pranikoff reveals the new, deep role of visual storytelling in how your business or organization can create sales-clinching experiences with your audiences throughout the buying cycle.

Book Formatting: Quality Control Checks for DesignersConfidence Ago
This presentation was made to help designers who work in publishing houses or format books for printing ensure quality.
Quality control is vital to every industry. This is why every department in a company need create a method they use in ensuring quality. This, perhaps, will not only improve the quality of products and bring errors to the barest minimum, but take it to a near perfect finish.
It is beyond a moot point that a good book will somewhat be judged by its cover, but the content of the book remains king. No matter how beautiful the cover, if the quality of writing or presentation is off, that will be a reason for readers not to come back to the book or recommend it.
So, this presentation points designers to some important things that may be missed by an editor that they could eventually discover and call the attention of the editor.

The world is being changed fundamentally by AI and we are constantly faced with newspaper headlines about its harmful effects. However, there is also the potential to both ameliorate theses harms and use the new abilities of AI to transform society for the good. Can you make the difference?
You could be a professional graphic designer and still make mistakes. There is always the possibility of human error. On the other hand if you’re not a designer, the chances of making some common graphic design mistakes are even higher. Because you don’t know what you don’t know. That’s where this blog comes in. To make your job easier and help you create better designs, we have put together a list of common graphic design mistakes that you need to avoid.
Transforming Brand Perception and Boosting Profitabilityaaryangarg12
In today's digital era, the dynamics of brand perception, consumer behavior, and profitability have been profoundly reshaped by the synergy of branding, social media, and website design. This research paper investigates the transformative power of these elements in influencing how individuals perceive brands and products and how this transformation can be harnessed to drive sales and profitability for businesses.
Through an exploration of brand psychology and consumer behavior, this study sheds light on the intricate ways in which effective branding strategies, strategic social media engagement, and user-centric website design contribute to altering consumers' perceptions. We delve into the principles that underlie successful brand transformations, examining how visual identity, messaging, and storytelling can captivate and resonate with target audiences.
Methodologically, this research employs a comprehensive approach, combining qualitative and quantitative analyses. Real-world case studies illustrate the impact of branding, social media campaigns, and website redesigns on consumer perception, sales figures, and profitability. We assess the various metrics, including brand awareness, customer engagement, conversion rates, and revenue growth, to measure the effectiveness of these strategies.
The results underscore the pivotal role of cohesive branding, social media influence, and website usability in shaping positive brand perceptions, influencing consumer decisions, and ultimately bolstering sales and profitability. This paper provides actionable insights and strategic recommendations for businesses seeking to leverage branding, social media, and website design as potent tools to enhance their market position and financial success.
