As presented at the Society for News Design Conference in Charlotte, NC on April 20, 2017.
Recording of the talk available at https://youtu.be/nfy6b5vpE5c
The Digital Media Design team at NPR strives to design experiences that meet listeners and readers across the all places they are now and will be in the future—websites, smartphones, tablets, connected cars, connected homes, wearables, and more.
Over the past several years, the team has launched and iterated on NPR One—NPR’s personalized, on-demand listening service—on over a dozen platforms. At the same time, we’ve redesigned large swaths of NPR.org, entirely rebuilt the web audio player, created essential internal editorial tools, and embarked on a ground-up rebuilt of the flagship NPR mobile app. Through all these projects, maintaining a consistent, shared vision of how we reach audiences and serve journalism has been essential.
In this presentation, I'll discuss three keys to successful platform and product design at NPR—audience-centric research & design processes, service to journalists, and partnership with local stations. I'll explore how these key themes impact our work and share the lessons we’ve learned in designing products that scale while meeting the needs of each of these core constituencies.
Designing The Listening Experience: The Making of NPR OneDaniel Newman
As presented on October 6, 2015 at HOW Interactive Design Conference in Chicago.
NPR One is a personalized audio experience designed to be heard. If we are doing our job well, then you likely aren’t even looking at your device. But being out-of-sight creates a unique set of constraints for building a mobile app. How do we craft an experience for that is audio-first? How do we design interfaces that are simple, content-first, and easy-to-understand, even if they're only used once in awhile? And how does the team work to evolve the experience and add new features while avoiding bloat and retaining the focus that is the hallmark of the app?
In this session, l'll discuss the evolution of NPR’s new digital radio platform, from inception to obstacles to examples of interactions built for listening. I'll talk about team dynamics and process, user research and A/B test findings, and delve into the paths not taken. Ultimately, you'll be able to learn from our successes and missteps as we continue to build the ultimate audio news and storytelling experience.

Search and social has empowered consumers to conduct in-depth research about the products they want most before they buy. The point at which a consumer chooses a brand, where to buy, and with whom they share the results is what Google calls "The Zero Moment of Truth." Now, it is up to communicators to join the conversation at this new moment where decisions are made to provide the content that buyers look for in the formats that attract them most powerfully. PR Newswire's Global Director of Emerging Media, Michael Pranikoff reveals the new, deep role of visual storytelling in how your business or organization can create sales-clinching experiences with your audiences throughout the buying cycle.

Será demonstrado na prática como utilizar SDKs e ferramentas do Fabric como o Digits, TwitterKit e Fastlane de forma eficaz. Entenda casos de sucesso da solução e dessa forma crie melhores aplicativos.

When designing new services / products / experience, designers often start with the user needs or technical feasibilities. When designers ask “why are we doing this”, we often shy away from the business reasons. If we try to design with a holistic view of everything, shouldn’t we understand the business needs as well?
Taking a step away from the traditional design thinking, this session will dive into business design and stretch our design thinking muscle to business thinking. Business design brings in the commercial prospect to form a more complete approach to solving complex problems.
In this session, we will look at examples of hands-on case study of how to integrate commercial thinking into design projects. How to balance the different requirements and needs from all angles? What are the different toolkits that can be used for designers to start thinking about business more? And maybe most importantly, how can designers stop being scared of numbers.
The Ace Awards is an annual event hosted by the Reno-Tahoe American Marketing Association (AMA). The goal of the Ace Awards is to recognize and acknowledge marketing excellence within our community. This presentation contains an overview of all the 2012 nominees.
NPR is engaging on a number of different fronts to build the digital radio experience of the future with our member stations. In doing so, many of our efforts are to collect, store, and leverage lots of user information that will make the experience much richer for each individual. In order to do this most effectively, we’re looking for partners to help us track this data and synthesize this large amount of data into real, actionable decisions across our applications, platforms, and offline initiatives. To this end, we need to segment and share information bi-directionally with our member stations and other partners in ways that respect our users privacy, while allowing our partners to also effectively ingest and make decisions on the information.

A recent profile piece on Victor Hernandez began with the following statement, "With what he’s wearing, Victor Hernandez seems to be part human and part robot." And while all human cyborg rumors can neither be confirmed or denied, Hernandez has developed a reputation for infusing traditional journalism leadership with new media applications. Hernandez is the Director of Media Innovation at Banjo, a fastgrowth startup specializing in event detection used everyday by thousands of journalists. He recently concluded a yearlong academic fellowship with the Reynolds Journalism Institute at University of Missouri focused on the opportunities and challenges of Apple Watch for newsrooms.
As the media leader who first brought a public content API to the market in 2008, NPR continues to innovate and learn about what it means to have flexible content. Our philosophy assumes that to maintain relevancy in an online world media companies need to be adroit at delivering content to multiple channels and disparate platforms. This in turn has lead us to keep a strategic focus on our API development. This positions us not just to meet our distribution needs, but has also helped drive business opportunity and allows for effective design and user experience whether in a browser or on a mobile device. This presentation will share our lessons learned and key metrics around successful creation and use of flexible content – from technology needs to business, editorial and design opportunities in an increasingly fragmented online product landscape.

Book Formatting: Quality Control Checks for DesignersConfidence Ago
This presentation was made to help designers who work in publishing houses or format books for printing ensure quality.
Quality control is vital to every industry. This is why every department in a company need create a method they use in ensuring quality. This, perhaps, will not only improve the quality of products and bring errors to the barest minimum, but take it to a near perfect finish.
It is beyond a moot point that a good book will somewhat be judged by its cover, but the content of the book remains king. No matter how beautiful the cover, if the quality of writing or presentation is off, that will be a reason for readers not to come back to the book or recommend it.
So, this presentation points designers to some important things that may be missed by an editor that they could eventually discover and call the attention of the editor.
