There are many factors in the data center that are driving the new data center design considerations. This slideshare discusses several of the trends in the data center and covers several solutions to implement.
Open Compute has had a revolutionary impact on data center design ,offering many simplicity and cost saving benefits. To become more mainstream, we believe critical questions need to be answered about the implications of OCP on the upstream power infrastructure. Can data centers still achieve Tier 3 redundancy? How do I support traditional and OCP loads in the same data center? This presentation will address these and other questions, and propose a series of simplified architectures to support OCP. We will discuss redundancy, availability, and flexibility implications, as well as present a cost analysis. Schneider Electric embraces the spirit of OCP by openly sharing this analysis and making these simplified reference designs freely available
The Schneider Electric underground self-healing solution can restore power to healthy areas of a distribution network in under 30 seconds. Our self-healing innovation improves re-energisation time and availability by independently isolating faults and swiftly restoring service to those areas of the grid directly unaffected. This decentralized solution is based on an off-the-shelf product, the Schneider Electric Easergy T200 substation control unit which establishes peer-to-peer communication over an IP network.

Scaling Green Instrumentation to more than 10 Million Coresinside-BigData.com
In this deck from SC18, Satoshi Matsuoka from RIKEN presents: Scaling Green Instrumentation to more than 10 Million Cores.
"We now have some sites that are extremely well instrumented for measuring power and energy. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s supercomputing center is a prime example, with sensors, data collection and analysis capabilities that span the facility and computing equipment. We have made major gains in improving the energy efficiency of the facility as well as computing hardware, but there are still large gains to be had with software- particularly application software. Just tuning code for performance isn’t enough; the same time to solution can have very different power profiles. We are at the point where measurement capabilities are allowing us to see cross-cutting issues- such as the cost of spin waits. These new measurement capabilities should provide a wealth of information to see the tall poles in the tent. This panel will explore how we can identify these emerging tall poles."

Best Practices for Achieving Return on Investment through Energy Efficient Computing presented by CSCI at CeBIT Green IT Forum on March 2, 2010 in Germany. Presented by Dr. Bernd Kosch, Head of Environmental Technology at Fujitsu and spokesperson for CSCI.
ScottMadden has developed an approach for analyzing data center requirements and driving improvements in existing data center retrofits. Our approach takes into account the technological requirements, the physical attributes of a data center, and the requirements for a rigorous measurement and verification program needed to ensure improvements actually capture the energy efficiently gains and the resultant greenhouse gas reductions.
Our approach addresses the latest trends in data center management such as virtualization and cloud computing and provide a framework for developing metrics needed to drive changes in data center performance.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

● HOW IS ENERGY EFFICIENCY DEFINED?
● POWER AND COOLING EFFICIENCY CALCULATIONS
● ECA IS FOR ENERGY SAVING TECHNOLOGY
● WHAT QUALIFIES ?
● ENERGY TECHNOLOGY LIST ( ETL)
● HOW CAN CUSTOMER CLAIM ECA ?
APC by Schneider Electric – Giles Pattison – 7th April 2011
32. How is efficiency defined?
Power usage effectiveness (PUE) and Data Center infrastructure efficiency (DCIE)
PUE is a ratio of total power coming into the data center to the power going
to the IT.
For example if it takes 1.5 times as much energy to run your data center as
than is required to for just the IT equipment.
DCIE is represented as a percentage of IT load power divided by total data
center power, and is the inverse of PUE.
Higher DCIE values indicate a more efficient data center.

APC by Schneider Electric – Giles Pattison – 7th April 2011
35. Enhanced Capital Allowance for energy-
saving technologies
● The Carbon Trust manages the Energy Technology List (ETL) and promotion
of the ECA scheme on behalf of Government.
● To help bring about a low carbon economy and reduce UK CO2 emissions by:
1. Influencing the design, availability, and uptake of the most energy-efficient
equipment types within the remit of the scheme;
2. Promoting the ETL as a principal procurement tool for designers,
specifiers and purchasers interested in energy-saving capital equipment.
APC by Schneider Electric – Giles Pattison – 7th April 2011
36. ETL – Technology Groups
● Air-to-air energy recovery
● Automatic monitoring and targeting equipment (
● Boilers
● CHP
● Compact heat exchangers
● Compressed air equipment
● Heat pumps for space heating
● HVAC Equipment
● Lighting
● Motors and Drives
● Pipe insulation

38. FINANCIAL GAINS FOR CUSTOMER
DUE TO ECA SCHEME
●EXAMPLE of ECA claim : If Client X made a profit of
£100,000 during current tax year and had purchased ECA
certified UPS project worth £70,000 during the same tax
year, then Client X will pay tax on £30,000 (£100,000 less
£70,000) only, instead of £100,000
●** UPS Project cost benefit includes : UPS systems,
delivery & offloading including craneage, direct install cost
covering cabling, battery build, project management, any
site modifications and UPS project specific professional
fees too.
APC by Schneider Electric – Giles Pattison – 7th April 2011
39. FINANCIAL GAINS FOR CUSTOMER
DUE TO ECA SCHEME
● Usual rate of capital allowance for plant and machinery is
20% p.a. on sliding scale basis and is spread over a
number of years.
●However with ECA the customer is allowed by HMRC to
use up the full cost of the UPS project ** as capital
allowance within the first year of purchase.
●This ECA scheme indirectly boosts the cash flow for the
customer for the first year.
●The ECA allowance is written off against customer’s own
taxable profit.
APC by Schneider Electric – Giles Pattison – 7th April 2011
