Design Guidelines and Lighting in your DowntownsThe Cecil Group
Design guidelines have proved to be an effective tool to enhance the economic success of commercial and mixed-use districts by reinforcing design characteristics that attract patrons, businesses and residents to an area. The guidelines – and how they are applied – must be responsive to the needs and motivations of the private sector as well as the civic goals associated with creating more attractive centers. During the presentation, Steve will share case studies and examples of design guidelines that have been applied for a range of community scales and circumstances, ranging from historic preservation to new urbanist town centers and the challenges of mixed-scale, mixed-use and layered architectural styles that typify most of our communities in Massachusetts. Original presentation given by Steven Cecil, Principal with The Cecil Group and Harriman.
Pragmatic REST: recent trends in API designMarsh Gardiner
As presented by @mpnally and @earth2marsh at I Love APIs 2015. Slides covered API design trends, with particular attention paid to hypermedia and versioning. Note the distinction between service-oriented and data-oriented approaches on slide #5.
Looking at Swagger and Pact to handle REST API specifications and contracts. Swagger allows for a JSON first specification of the API as well as generating and discovering service controllers. This can be done coherently across multiple technology stacks. We also look into using Pact to create consumer-driven contract between services in a micro service architecture to improve development confidence.
A session in the DevNet Zone at Cisco Live, Berlin. The APIC REST API is a programmatic interface to the Application Policy Infrastructure Controller (APIC) that uses a Representational State Transfer (REST) architecture. The API accepts and returns HTTP or HTTPS messages that contain JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) or Extensible Markup Language (XML) documents. Developers can use any programming language to generate the messages and the JSON or XML documents that contain the API methods or managed object (MO) descriptions.
As you go into the cloud, the applications you are building will often be built on service-oriented architectures that communicate through RESTful APIs. Where API design and development used to be an uncommon thing, today it has become a basic application requirement. George Reese will cover the basic considerations in designing and implementing an API for your applications.
George Reese is the author of a number of technology books and a regular speaker on RESTful APIs, cloud computing, Java, and database systems. His most recent books are The REST API Design Handbook and O’Reilly’s Cloud Application Architectures. Professionally, he is the Executive Director of Cloud Computing at Dell as a result of Dell's recent acquisition of Enstratius, a company George co-founded. George has also led a number of Open Source projects, including several MUD libraries and the Imaginary Home home automation libraries for Java. He is also the primary maintainer of Dasein Cloud, a cloud abstraction API for Java.
George holds a BA from Bates College in Maine and an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.
RESTful Architecture is effectively an implementation of Resource-Oriented architecture (ROA). ROA - is a good fit for Service oriented Architecture (SOA) implementation. Check out KickStartPros approach on RESTful API Design.
* REST = REpresentational State Transfer
* REST is Resource Based Representation. REST identifies things by JSON or XML & URIs.
* REST behavior/actions are identified by HTTP methods (GET, POST, PUT, DELETE).
* Using Uniform Interface Architecture with REST you can decouple Client (like Browser/Android App/iOS App) and Server.
* REST using Layered System and Cacheable Architecture gives better performance.
StirTrek 2018 - Rapid API Development with SailsJustin James
Creating a RESTful API should be the easiest part of your development. You should not have to be a rocket scientist to successfully create a RESTful API. With Sails, you can create a full featured RESTful API in just a few minutes without writing any code. You get create, destroy, update, find, paginate, sort, and filtering out of the box. If you need to add your business logic to any of the methods or create your own methods, you can do that by writing simple JavaScript functions. Once you are ready to implement security, Sails provides policies that can be applied to any REST action to implement email/password, social login or Windows authentication. For data storage, Sails bundles the power ORM, Waterline, which provides a simple data access layer that just works, no matter which one of the more than 30 data storage providers you are using.
This talk will be code heavy as we walk through getting started with Sails and demonstrate how to implement the features of Sails through the creation of an API. As well, I will share the tips and tricks that I have learned using Sails at a Fortune 100 company. You will walk away understanding how and why you should use Sails on your next project. All code covered in the talk with be immediately available for download.

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!
