 Cosmetics are defined as “intended to be applied to human
body for cleansing, beautifying, promoting attractiveness or
altering the appearance without affecting the body’s structure
or functions.”
 Cosmeceuticals are products that have both cosmetic and
therapeutic (medical or drug-like) effects, and are intended to
have a beneficial effect on skin health and beauty.

 Dandruff is condition of scalp that causes flakes of skin to
appear.
 It is often accompanied by itching.
 The exact cause is unknown, but various factors increase the
risk.
 Dandruff can be embarrassing and hard to treat but help is
available.

 Mild dandruff can be treated by daily shampooing.
 Severe dandruff treated by using medical shampoo/
antifungal shampoo.
 Most antidandruff / antifungal shampoo contain one of
following ingredients
I. Ketoconazole
II. Selenium sulfide
III. Zinc pyrithione
IV. Coal tar
V. Salicylic acid
VI. Tea-tree oil

 Also called halitosis. It originates from two Latin words
Halitus-breath and Osis-disease.
 Common condition can cause significant embarrassment.
 Third most common reason that people seek dental care, after tooth
decay and gum disease.
 Daily brushing & flossing and regular dental checkup & cleanings
are best prevention for bad breath.
 Described by HOWE(1874)

 Intra oral origin- 80-90%
poor oral hygiene, dental caries, tongue
coating, oral carcinoma etc.
 Extra oral origin-10-20%
gastrointestinal diseases,chronic sinusitis and
tonsillitis,infection in respiratory tract etc.
 Some volatile food stuff like garlic, onions, spices.
 Systemic causes like H.pylori infection, leukemia, diabetic
ketoacidosis, renal & hepatic failure etc.

 Brushing of teeth twice daily with appropriate
brushing techniques for duration of 2-3 mins.
 Drink plenty of liquids.
 Limit sugar and caffeine intake.
 Limit intake of strong odor spices.
 Eat fresh fibrous vegetables etc.
 Mechanical reduction of intraoral
nutrients and micro organisms
 Chemical reduction of oral microbial load
 Rendering malodorous gases nonvolatile
 Masking the malodor by using mouthwash.

 Most common condition affecting oral cavity.
 Slow progressing disease involves gums which supports bone of
teeth further result in loss of tooth.
 Indication of poor oral hygiene.
 Bleeding gums leads serious problem
if remain untreated for long time.

 Brushing too hard
 Improper flossing
 Leukemia
 Use of blood thinners
 Bacterial infection

 Proper dental hygiene.
 Brush teeth gently with soft brush.
 Rinsing the mouth with salt water
or hydrogen peroxide and water.
 Stay away from smoking and tobacco
products.
 Floss at least once a day.
 Visit dentist every months 6 months
to remove plaque.
 Use medicines that cure bleeding gums.

 Involves discomfort or pain in teeth when encountering certain
substances and temperature.
 Pain is often sharp and sudden but it is temporary.
 Inner layer of tooth is exposed in oral cavity leads to tooth
sensitivity.

 Use fluoridated toothpaste or desensitizing toothpaste
 Avoids highly acidic foods and very cold foods
 If damage is extensive then other options like-
Laser treatment for sensitivity
Fluoride gel
Root canal
 Use softer toothbrush
 Brush and floss regularly
 Taking healthy foods which strengthens enamel
Ex. fiber rich food, antioxidant, sugarless chewing gums
 Avoids tobacco, high sugar carbohydrate food
