This document describes the design and analysis of a mechanical vibration exciter. The exciter uses cam and follower mechanisms to generate uniaxial vibrations at different frequencies. It is designed to produce displacements in the range of 30mm using a simple harmonic motion cam profile and a snail cam profile to generate sudden jerks. The key components of the exciter - the shaft, cams, followers, springs and key - are designed and their stresses are analyzed to verify they are within specified limits. Models of the cam and follower mechanisms are created in Inventor. The performance of the exciter is tested using an FFT analyzer which shows it can produce the intended jerk and SHM motions.
