Denver Atlassian Community Meeting - April 2019. Formerly Atlassian User Groups. Summit 2019 Recap. Also, this month we had two Atlassians from San Francisco here to talk about all-things-Statuspage. Shannon Winter and Jake Bartlett walk through the core features of Statuspage and incident communication best practices to build trust with every incident.
Product Keynote: Jira Software and Bitbucket CloudAtlassian
It has been 10 years since the DevOps concept first emerged and over that time a lot has changed. DevOps practices have moved through the hype cycle to become the de-facto standard for high performing software teams.
In this keynote, you’ll hear about new features we are bringing to Jira Software and Bitbucket Cloud. You’ll learn how software teams use Atlassian’s cloud-based development tools in conjunction with partners solutions to break through functional silos to speed delivery and support a You Build It, You Run It culture.
Embracing Jira Cloud: Tips from an ex-Server adminAtlassian
Most long-time Jira Server Admins, like myself, were skeptical of Jira Cloud. But now, I'm a proud Jira Cloud convert.
Join me on my journey of migrating to Jira Cloud and learn the tips and tricks that helped me survive and thrive in a cloud world. I'll share the techniques to keeping your instance running smoothly (even when you can't log into the system to troubleshoot issues, restart it, or see where slowdowns are occurring). And, you'll learn how to navigate critical concerns areas around information assurance and security on the cloud.
Product Keynote: Jira Service Desk, Opsgenie, StatuspageAtlassian
Software has changed the way we work, and no one has had to adapt faster than the IT team. In this keynote, learn about the new developments across Atlassian cloud products targeted at helping IT teams meet the challenges of building a world-class operations, incident management and support organization.
Are you Ready to Rumble? Let's Migrate Some Jira DataAtlassian
Migrating data from one Jira or Confluence to another can be frustrating and painful if not planned properly. We've managed 40+ successful migrations over the last 6 years at Cisco, and want to share the tips and tricks we learned along the way.
Discover how we handled the migration of Jira and Confluence instances with the right mix of people, processes, and tools. Get a look at our own code and migration questionnaire to help your own future migrations.
Expecto Performa! The Magic and Reality of Performance TuningAtlassian
In the enterprise there are rarely simple solutions to highly nuanced problems that satisfy all needs. Several customers might each ask "How do I make Jira/Confluence faster?" and each require a different answer. Using this example, this talk will pick apart the inputs, outputs, concerns, and realities of answering a short question with a long answer. We'll then discuss real-world examples from our own internal instances, to give you a taste of the process we've gone through to solve our own performance problems, and to show why there is no simple playbook; "it depends" on a lot! The key takeaways are:
* The importance of having a shared definition of performance
* The importance of having agreed-upon priorities, including what isn't important
* The importance of measuring (allthethings) and understanding them
* The thing you think is the problem might not be the problem, and vice versa.
* The real world and the ideal world tend to look nothing alike!
How HipChat Ships and Recovers Fast with DevOps PracticesAtlassian
HipChat operates a ‘You Build It, You Run It’ service model, where developers are responsible for building, testing, and operating their systems. While we have a high speed of development, things can break – but we also recover quickly. Learn about how we've integrated best practices within our planning, building, operating and learning processes to optimize for speed and efficiency but also mitigate, prepare for, and handle incidents.
The presenter will walk you through four steps for how to operate at a high speed of development and also prepare for any incident — planning, prevention, preparation and collecting feedback— and instruct you on how you can build these processes into your Atlasssian workflow (including JIRA Software, HipChat, Bitbucket, Confluence, Bamboo, and StatusPage).
Learn about:
- Planning: How we use JIRA Software and Confluence to plan roadmaps and sync up with teams
- Prevention: Best practices during code reviews and testing
- Preparation: How we prepare for incidents with war games
Review: Collecting feedback, assessing incident causes and improving our processes
Come out of this session with a newfound understanding of how to use Atlassian products within your DevOps workflow!

Managing Application Lifecycle using Jira and Bitbucket Cloud and AWS ToolingAtlassian
Managing the lifecycle of an application can seem like a challenging process. However, things aren't always as challenging as they can seem. With the right combination of tools and services, you can streamline the entire process, allowing you to increase productivity, identify issues quickly and reduce manual processes. All of which can increase the frequency of releases and ensure you're able to deliver on customer needs more quickly. In this session we'll show you how to leverage Atlassian tools, like Jira and Bitbucket Cloud, to manage the full SDLC for applications built and hosted in AWS cloud. You'll learn how to go from new feature request through to release, tracking issues the entire way.
Beyond Agile and DevOps: From Concepts to Products in Weeks, Not MonthsAtlassian
Transportation, travel, finance... Almost every industry has been disrupted, or will be soon. Central to this wave of change is a new way to work that combines agile, DevOps, Lean Startup mentality, and constant experimentation. This enables small teams to be both bold and extremely effective, while learning and improving at a much faster rate than ever before.
Let me, Tanguy Crusson, take you through a day in the life of a successful product team. Your team can become one, too.

Jira & Ansible: Streamlining Jira Server Administration for the EnterpriseAtlassian
In 2017, Yelp had over 40 Jira administrators. Their environment had hundreds of orphaned workflows, screens, and schemes with very little oversight into who was doing what with their Jira Server instance.
Their team turned to Ansible to empower Yelp's engineers to create and archive projects, update categories, project leads, keys, and archive projects without having access to administrative rights and sensitive functions. Learn how they secured and simplified their environment, reduced turnaround time for Jira requests, and made their lives as admins much easier (and how you can, too!)
Escape from Flatland: Making Your Project 3-Dimensional in Jira SoftwareAtlassian
Are you using tools and spreadsheets such as Microsoft Project or Google docs to manage your project? They certainly appear fast and easy at first, but they can easily become unwieldy within the first week of the start of your project. A month later, you may have 100 columns and 500 rows! At eBay, this was the case for a few teams until they decided to try a small experiment using JIRA. The goal was to empower teams to better manage their work and provide them with better tools to work with. Jon Bach, Senior Program Manager for Contact Reduction at eBay, will unravel what happened next that helped bring a more relational and extensible approach to managing projects as compared to the the flat nature of spreadsheets.
Scaling Agile to the Enterprise: 5 Secrets to Unlocking the Strategic Value o...Atlassian
Let’s face it – scaling agile is hard. As organizations move beyond the adoption of scrum/lean at the team level and look to harness the power of agility throughout the enterprise, the skills, processes and tools needed to thrive change. New stakeholders at the product, program, portfolio, and executive levels become intimately linked to the work being done; new frameworks get introduced to support a systems approach across hundreds of teams; and new tools are required to support the visibility, alignment, and collaboration needed across multiple portfolios.
Join Scott Blacker, Head of Product for Jira Align, to learn why some of the world’s largest companies are adopting agile at the enterprise level, what secret weapons they deploy to overcome some of the most difficult aspects of scaling agile, and how Jira Align has helped some of these companies thrive in their mission to become a truly agile enterprise.

How to Power Continuous Deployment at Any Scale with AtlassianAtlassian
No two companies' build pipelines are alike. Some are cloud-first and some work entirely behind the firewall. In each type of organization, and in all of those in-between, there is a need to efficiently scale up and out their continuous delivery infrastructure as the organization matures.
Technical Account Managers (TAMs) like Matt Shelton work with loads of enterprise customers and get a birds'-eye view of the myriad challenges they face. Join him for a discussion of scaling continuous delivery while balancing the demands of risk and compliance against the pressures of a shrinking time to market. He'll show how products like Bamboo, Bitbucket Pipelines, and per-build containers align best with different organizational needs in the pursuit of DevOps perfection.
Full slide deck for day long discussion of microservices topics. Why use microservices, what options exist and how to migrate to them and address common problems.
Making Software for the Software Makers: How Atlassian Teams use Jira SoftwareAtlassian
Ever wondered how internal Atlassian teams push Jira Software to the limit? At Atlassian each team defines a process that best meets their unique needs and challenges. In this talk Product and Marketing Management duo Jason Wong and Jake Brereton will share insights into how Atlassian teams harness and stress test Jira Software to get their teams humming. You'll leave this session with a behind-the-scenes look at how our teams:

- Add depth and accuracy to status tracking with deep developer tool integrations
- Use apps for Atlassian tools to ensure all team members are fully connected to a common workflow
Building on the Shoulders of Giants: the Story of Bitbucket PipelinesAtlassian
When the Atlassian Dev Tools team looked to innovate on continuous integration and delivery, we explored many ways to bring the build and deployment pipeline closer to developers and Bitbucket. This led us to think outside the existing product boundaries of Bamboo and build on top of the Bitbucket Connect platform.
James Bryant, a senior designer on the Software Team, will take you through how his team decided to build on top of a platform instead of building out new products. It involves defining a vision, guiding a team with an experience, and testing with customers early and often to build the new Bitbucket Pipelines feature.
You’ll come away from this session with a framework for adopting an experience-driven strategy, and tips to help give your agile teams a vision to build on top of a platform.
Products covered:
Bitbucket, Bamboo

So you get DevOps. You like the idea and think it’s important. The trouble is that others in your team don’t. This session will help you understand how to convince your team of the benefits of DevOps. Packed with facts and figures, the presentation works through the common challenges Java teams face when moving to a DevOps model and outlines how to address them. It also shows you how to balance evangelism against pragmatism when championing DevOps in your organization. How We end the Walking Dead in the Enterprise - Session Sponsored by VersentAmazon Web Services
We've all experienced it; attempt after attempt to bring contemporary transformation to the workplace, only to be attacked by 'the old guard' of the technology landscape. In 2016, companies are learning that many old methods/processes/technologies have zombified, or are already infected and dying. Old world solutions, powered by the fear of the new, the uncertainty of change and the doubt that it will scale, are quickly limiting companies by their inability to rapidly change.
However a growing numbers of CIO's, and leadership teams have embraced the 'full stack' revolution and are reaping the benefits of true Mode 2 transformation. We'd like to share some insight from real world customers who've built 'new world' material ecosystems that stands the rigour of these internal and external threats. Leaders and technologists who've leaned into change and avoided becoming another member of 'the walking dead'.
Topics Include:
Strategies to deliver elastic, utility cloud across your enterprise.
Square peg, round hole & your Operating Model – Mode 2.
Don't bypass Service Management – (hint: it's not faster). Tips & Tricks.
Belligerent, aggressive automation – JDI.
Tales from the Battlefield – a real world example.

Architecting Atlassian for Healthcare and FDA ComplianceAtlassian
The US medical device, pharmaceutical, and healthcare industries have stringent regulatory norms to protect patients' safety and privacy. They are under constant pressure to provide innovative solutions for improved personal care while staying compliant with the ever-evolving regulatory landscape.
But how do you bridge the gap between agile development for innovation and audit readiness for compliance? In this session, Sundar Selvatharasu and Andy Spoone of Sierra Labs will share how they use Jira both for engineering innovation and as a quality management system for compliance with GXP, GDPR, and HIPAA.
DevOps and Regulatory Compliance—Like Oil and Water or Peanut Butter and Jelly?TechWell
DevOps and regulatory compliance are two critically important ingredients in today’s connected organizations. DevOps enables you to move quickly and respond to change in an era where change is increasing at an exponential rate with no sign of slowing down. Regulatory compliance ensures that your organization takes the appropriate steps to follow relevant laws that appear to require adding burdensome processes and controls to your software development lifecycle. Brandon Carlson acknowledges that at first glance these two ideas seem incompatible, but they actually go together like peanut butter and jelly. While maintaining, analyzing, confirming, and reporting on the status of required information security, compliance, and privacy controls can be difficult, integrating these tasks within your DevOps/continuous delivery pipeline is easier than you think. Using examples from real-world projects in organizations just like yours, Brandon explains how to integrate compliance and reporting into your projects using tools you already know such as pair programming, Jenkins, Chef, Metasploit, and others. When it comes to compliance, it’s not oil and water. It’s peanut butter and jelly time.
Bringing Continuous Delivery to Dell.com: A RetrospectiveTechWell
Multibillion dollar sales portal Dell.com has more than 1,000 developers working in tandem to contribute content and code. This presents unique strategic challenges when it comes to selecting, planning, and deploying DevOps tools. James Watt presents a retrospective on transitioning one of the world’s largest grossing websites from a quarterly waterfall delivery cadence to weekly agile releases. Learn how “continuous” principles changed the way Dell.com improves its user experience and the tools that made it possible. Starting with a legacy waterfall delivery chain, the Buyer DevOps team had to design, develop, and roll out a staged plan to transition from monolithic integration environments linked by bespoke engineering to dynamically provisioned and continuously-tested cloud infrastructure based on industry-leading toolsets. James describes TeamCity and Octopus integration with Team Foundation Server and other Microsoft products, large scale C# Selenium test automation, and dynamic virtual environment provisioning along with continuous integration, continuous testing, and other rapid release concepts.
Advance ALM and DevOps Practices with Continuous ImprovementTechWell
Do you want to improve your application lifecycle and incorporate DevOps practices quickly with limited resources? If so, you’re experiencing a common scenario – not enough budget and unrealistic time constraints. Your big multi-year application lifecycle management (ALM) project seems less achievable than ever, and you are left wondering how to move forward. Jason St-Cyr shares how to establish a continuous improvement approach using “build, measure, learn” techniques and a DevOps maturity model to kickstart your DevOps/ALM project. Jason reviews some of the tools—Visual Studio Online, Atlassian OnDemand, and TeamCity—available to support iterative DevOps changes. Find out how to tackle smaller achievable chunks of process improvement, even when time does not seem to be on your side. Learn how to plan for incremental organizational change and examine metrics for monitoring improvements, reporting on success, and supporting your business case for further investment. Join Jason to see why you don’t have to put your organization’s DevOps initiatives on hold.

Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !KatiaHIMEUR1
Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
