What is Democracy
• Government of the people ,by the people, for
the people.
• Democracy in modern usage, is a system of
government in which the citizens exercise
power directly or elect representatives from
among themselves to form a governing body,
such as a parliament.

ANCIENT ORIGINS
• The term "democracy" first appeared in
ancient Greek political and philosophical
thought in the city-state of Athens during
classical antiquity
• Led by Cleisthenes, Athenians established
what is generally held as the first democracy
in 508–507 BC
• Cleisthenes is referred to as "the father of
Athenian democracy."
MIDDLE AGES
• During the Middle Ages, there were various
systems involving elections or assemblies,
although often only involving a small part of
the population.
• In the middle ages there were some
difficulties in the democracy.
MODERN ERA
20th and 21st centuries
• Due to the revolutions in many parts of the
20th century, religious and re-colonization led
to democratization in different countries.
• Democracy started in Latin America and Asia
DEMOCRACY DAY
• The United Nations announced on September
15 every year that the United Nations was
declared a democracy day in 2007

DIRECT DEMOCRACY
• People directly participate in government
activities in direct democracy.
• People were directly involved in making
decisions in the government.
• Example : India

• In the indirect democracy people choose their
functionaries (representatives). These elected
functionaries are governing the government.
• This is followed in many countries of the
world.
• Example: Australia, Canada.
