Abstract: This article discusses the demand and supply scenario of Natural Gas in India. There is huge scope for development of Natural Gas industry in India as demand is much more than its supply. A large portion of Natural Gas used in India is imported.

India is the world’s fourth-largest energy consumer in the world; oil and gas account for 37.3 per cent of total energy consumption. Buoyant economic growth is the main factor driving the country’s energy requirements.
India has 5.6 billion barrels of proven oil reserves, with an average oil production of 0.8 million barrels per day (MPBD). Oil consumption is estimated to expand at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.4 per cent during FY2008-16 to 4 MPBD by 2016. India has 1,330 billion cubic meters (BCM) of gas reserves and produced 47.6 BCM of gas in 2012.
The Government of India has enacted various policies, such as the New Exploration Licensing Policy (NELP) and Coal Bed Methane (CBM) policy, to encourage investments across the industry's value chain. 100 per cent foreign direct investment (FDI) is allowed in the exploration and production (E&P) projects/ companies; and 49 per cent is allowed in refining.
Liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports have increased significantly; offering huge opportunities for LNG terminal operation, engineering, procurement and construction services.

1. Introduction
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) is blessed with an abundance of energy resources. It
has the world’s largest proven oil reserves, the world’s fourth largest proven gas reserves,
has abundant wind and solar renewable energy resources, and is the world’s 20th largest
producer and consumer of electricity. Saudi Arabia makes negligible use of its renewable
energy resources and almost all its electricity is produced from the combustion of fossil
fuels. Despite attempts to diversify the economy, the oil and gas industry still accounts for
approximately 75% of budget revenues, 45% of GDP, and 90% of export earnings.
Exploitation of the natural resources has allowed the Saudi government to keep energy
prices low through a system of direct and indirect subsidies. The nation has benefited
greatly from these policies, but together with increased prosperity and sophistication, a
culture of wasteful energy usage has become established.
KSA is experienced rapid economic growth over recent years. Since 2000, the energy
consumption per capita has increased by more than 30%. This increase in primary energy
consumption has occurred during a period of declining oil exports. In 2008, the total
primary energy consumption has approximately reached 800 million barrels of oil
equivalent (BOE), of which more than 60% was oil. The consumption of primary energy
within the Kingdom is expected to double in 2030 leading to diminishing oil exports based
on current trends (Ministry of Water and Electricity, 2009).
There is widespread recognition within KSA that with growing internal demand for
primary energy there will be a declining proportion of oil for export. Consequently, the
national government has identified energy efficiency as a key national priority, reflecting the
rapid increase in domestic consumption of petroleum products, related GHG emissions and
the associated opportunity cost of lost export revenues. There is also a strategic national
push to develop an energy efficiency and renewable technology R&D and manufacturing
base in an attempt to diversify the economy away from fossil fuels.

2. Fossil fuel production and consumption
2.1 Oil production and consumption
Saudi Arabia is the largest producer and net exporter of oil in the world with more than 10
million barrels/day produced in 2007. The state-owned oil company, Saudi Aramco, is the
world’s largest oil company. The country has around 100 major oil and gas fields and more
than 1500 wells. Recently, the Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of .
Energy is one of the most important factors for a developing country like Bangladesh. Like the rest of the
countries of the world, the demand for energy is increasing day by day in our country. Energy sector of
Bangladesh is exceedingly depended on the limited gas reserve. Given the rising demand for fuel it will be
very difficult t to meat this demand with only indigenous natural gas. About 80% of the power generation in
the country is now gas based. Therefore diversification of fuel has become indispensible it has been
envision 2021 that 53% of the power generation will be coal based by year 2021. The worldwide scenario
shows that, Coal is the ultimate fuel for future. Bangladesh is very lucky that it has got significant but
almost untapped high quality coal resource. Five coal fields in the country contain 3.3 billion metric tons
coal. Recently rate of coal production from Barapukuria are increased significantly due to application of
modern coal extracting method, LTCC. Coal to Synthesis gas conversion, is an emerging technology to
wide the application area of coal and commercially proved technology worldwide. The paper gives an
overview of the current state of coal scenario and natural gas scenario in Bangladesh. Here we discuss the
principles of coal to syngas conversion technology and aside from a brief introduction to 5 process
methods for conversion of coal to Synthesis Natural Gas (SNG). The Steam-Oxygen Gasification,
Hydrogasification, Catalytic Steam Gasification, Underground Steam-Oxygen Gasification, Underground
Hydrogasification processes are discussed with the help of process flow diagram. This paper also
summaries the present scenario of Syngas production worldwide. Finally we propose a coal based syngas
infrastructure, where coal is converted to syngas, then processed to make Synthesis Natural Gas (SNG),
then it transmitted via dedicated pipeline or injected into existing natural gas pipeline to the different types
of user like Household, Thermal Power Plant, Brick Field, Ceramics & Glass Industry and any kind of
thermal process industry. This proposed technology is design to reduce the dependency on natural gas.

1. INTRODUCTION
Natural gas is a fuel formed when layers of buried plants, and animals are exposed to intense heat and pressure over
thousands of years. The energy that the plants originally obtained from the sun is stored in the form of chemical bonds in
natural gas. Natural gas is a nonrenewable resource because it cannot be replenished on a human time frame. Natural gas
is one of the major fossil fuels and enjoys a reputation as a clean fuel in comparison with other fossil fuels such as
gasoline or diesel. It is a combustible mixture of hydrocarbon gases. Natural gas is a mixture of methane (C1) & ethane
(C2), with small quantities of higher alkanes, i.e. propane and butane. Methane constitutes 70 to 90 per cent of natural gas.
It is acquired either as an associated gas along with crude oil or as free gas from independent gas fields, unlike naphtha
which is obtained by refining crude oil. It is used as a fuel and feedstock in different industrial sectors like fertilisers,
petrochemicals and polymers etc. Naphtha which can also be used as a fuel and feedstock is closest substitute to natural
gas. Coal Bed Methane (CBM), which primarily comprises of methane (>95%), is natural gas trapped in coal seams held
in place by water pressure.
2. INDIAN NATURAL GAS DEMAND - SUPPLY SCENARIO
It was only in the late 1980s that gas found a meaningful place in the domestic primary energy consumption stack of fuels.
Ever since natural gas has been able to garner nearly 8.0 % share in the total primary energy consumption mix. It is
expected that natural gas will play an increasingly important role in fulfilling India's energy security needs. Currently,
natural gas is primarily consumed in the power sector (38 % of the total consumption) as fuel and in the fertilizer sector
(26 %) as feedstock. The shortfall in the Indian gas market has forced many industries and power generators to take
recourse to more expensive alternative fuels.
India's total proven reserves of natural gas, as on April 2012, was estimated at 1,355 bcm, with two-thirds located in
offshore gas fields. Gas reserves have been increasing at a CAGR of 4.5 per cent over the last 5 years. Considering the
production level of 35.4 bcm in 2013-14, India's reserves are likely to last approximately 38 years, compared to 17.5 years
in the case of oil reserves.
Natural Gas Reserves:
Earlier, majority of domestic natural gas reserves were concentrated in the offshore gas fields at MumbaiHigh. However,
large finds have been made by RIL, ONGC and Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation Ltd(GSPC) in the offshore KG basin
area of Andhra Pradesh. Onshore reserves are primarily located in Rajasthan and the north-eastern states of Assam,
Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Tripura.

3. SUPPLY SIDE SCENARIO
Post the commencement of RIL's KG Basin in April 2009, the domestic natural gas production had seen a boost.
However, closure of wells due to sand and water ingress led to production from the basin declining to 5.1 bcm in 2013-14
as against 9.5 bcm in the previous year (and 20 bcm in 2010-11). Consequently, domestic natural gas production declined
by 13 per cent y-o-y to 35.4 bcm in 2013-14.

4. DEMAND SIDE SCENARIO
Natural gas consumption in India increased at a CAGR of 4 per cent over the last 5 years, rising to 53 bcm in 2013-14
from 44 bcm in 2008-09. Gas demand is driven by the fertilisers and power sectors, which together accounted for just
over half of India's natural gas consumption in 2013-14. Other major end-use sectors are city gas distribution (CGD) and
refineries with 13 per cent and 9 per cent respectively for the same period. Given fall in domestic gas output in 2013-14,
the share of LNG imports increased to 33 per cent in 2013-14. With domestic gas availability expected to remain
constrained, India will continue to rely on imported LNG.

5. OUTLOOK ON DEMAND AND SUPPLY
As we can see from the following table, demand generated by various segments for natural gas is unlikely to be filled by
domestic natural gas and hence import of natural gas is inevitable. What it also tells is there is a huge scope for
development of natural gas industry in India with demand always expected to exceed supply
