The document describes the author's experience volunteering at a community center in order to fulfill high school graduation requirements for community service hours. Through this experience, the author gained leadership responsibilities and was selected to participate in a youth exchange program in Edmonton, Alberta. This provided an opportunity for personal and leadership development.
1. In high school I learnt that one of the
most important requirements for
graduating is acquiring a certain
amount of community service hours.
As my time in high school came to an
end I was faced with the task of finding
somewhere to volunteer. After
searching and researching community
centres in and around my community, I
found one that I really liked and I
signed up for there youth program for
young leaders. After working with the
coordinators I started to gain
responsibilities that made me eligible
for a youth exchange trip to Edmonton
Alberta. By participating in this
program I got an opportunity to
experience something that would live
in me forever and give me a chance to
learn more about myself and what a
strong leader I can be with the right
opportunities.
2. At my last job I was a catering
supervisor and cafeteria manager that
was presented with the task of
managing one of the company’s largest
and newest catering client for the
summer of 2012. I was in charge of a
team of 30 employees that were to be
catering for CTV as they broadcasted
the 2012 Olympics. Because the studio
employees were working around the
clock, we were to ensure they are fed at
all times and that they are kept happy
and motivated throughout the day.
During this time I made my job my
first priority and worked an average of
18 hours a day for 3 consecutive
weeks. At the end of it all I was given
an outstanding review by the superiors
at CTV which gained the company an
outstandingly larger contract for the
future. I was recognized for my great
leadership role with an employee of the
season trophy.
3. During high school I was known as the
new student that was trying to fit in. I
was recommended to join a school
program to help with my adjustment to
a new school. I then decided to join the
Peer Tutoring and Leadership Program
which then gave me a chance to help
my peers get better in areas they were
struggling in but I excelled at. I took
my role very seriously and impressed
my teachers and my fellow students to
the point that I was a poster boy for my
teachers. Because of the impact I had
on the students I tutored I gained the
respect of every one I encountered
through this program. I also received a
certificate of recognition in front of the
school at our general assembly.
4. About one month ago I was started
looking for a new job after being
unemployed since I returned to college
in January of 2013. At the very last
moment I was informed of a job fair
for a new location of the Jack Astor’s
Restaurant in North York. I was given
one day to be prepared with a new
resume and cover letter for an
interview. On the day of the interview I
was mentally and physically prepared
for what was ahead. I got there and
listened to what they had to say, I was
attentive, I was ready answer any
questions they had to ask pertaining to
my resume. I then was given the
chance to speak about myself and this
is where I sealed the deal. After I spoke
of my skills, highlighted my
qualifications and expressing that I
have what it takes to completely fulfill
the position and as a result of my
preparation I was given the job on the
spot .
5. At my last job as a supervisor and
manager I was required to uphold a
certain level of skills, creativity and
passion for what for in a timely
manner. One day a very special client
at the very last moment needed to
place an order for a simple but
beautiful fruit platter that needed to
be delivered within two hours even
though she was one hour drive away
from our office. I was in charge of this
task, where I used what ever fruit was
available to me in the fridge and
deliver it as well. I managed to get to
create a very simple but beautiful
looking fruit platter and deliver it to
the client 30 minutes before the
deadline.
