Emerging mHealth holds great potential to improve healthcare access, costs and quality through ubiquitous mobile devices. However, widespread adoption faces challenges from healthcare's resistance to change and the need to navigate complex, fragmented systems. Expectations for mHealth are high among patients, doctors and payers, but most experts expect slower adoption as improving patient care often disrupts traditional models. Emerging markets are pioneering mHealth by leaping ahead through greater needs and fewer barriers, showing the path could be smoother where systems are less rigidly established.

Samurai were warriors in Japan from 700 AD to the late 19th century who adhered to a code of honor called Bushido. They were loyal servants to military lords called Daimyo, and were expected to commit seppuku or ritual suicide by disembowelment if they brought dishonor. Samurai used various weapons like katanas and yumi bows in battle, and wore heavy plated armor up to 30 kilograms decorated with symbols of bravery to protect themselves. Though their reign has ended, the samurai tradition continues to influence modern Japanese culture.

This is the first report on Telehealth in India, and was authored in 2011 by Rajendra Pratap Gupta for Telemedicine Society of India , when he chaired the Organising Committee of the International Telemedicine Congress 2011 at Mumbai
This report gives a detailed overview of where India stands and what is the scope in future
The document discusses how information technology (IT) can transform healthcare in India. It notes that the current state of IT in Indian healthcare is low, with little investment and utilization of IT to deliver quality, affordable, and accessible care. However, IT has great potential to improve healthcare as an enabler if adopted properly. Some key areas where IT could be used include increasing health awareness, overcoming infrastructure gaps through telemedicine, building health worker skills through e-learning, and managing non-communicable diseases with remote monitoring solutions. The presentation emphasizes that IT, if implemented collaboratively across various healthcare stakeholders, can help transform sick care to wellness care for the population.
Creating an Integrated Healthcare Delivery System through ITPankaj Vaish
The document summarizes solutions for improving healthcare in India through integrated healthcare delivery systems using information technology. It discusses problems like low healthcare spending and lack of access to care in rural areas. Solutions proposed include using electronic health records, telemedicine, remote patient monitoring and mobile health to improve access, affordability and availability of care. The conference discusses Religare Technologies' integrated hospital information systems, teleconsultation platforms, and patient education apps as examples of using IT to help bridge India's healthcare divide by making healthcare providers and services more interconnected.
The document discusses the growth of mHealth and networked devices in healthcare. It notes that analysts forecast strong growth in the mHealth market, with physicians increasingly using smartphones and the global market for remote patient monitoring growing substantially. mHealth can help address rising healthcare costs by reducing costs through remote monitoring and reducing office visits. It can also help manage chronic diseases, which account for much of healthcare spending. The document outlines Accenture's research on the mHealth opportunity and barriers to its development, noting that industry respondents see networking as important to their competitive future and are developing various networked healthcare devices and services.
Convergence of voice, video, and data through mobile technologies is enabling new mHealth solutions. These include tele-triage and tele-clinics to improve healthcare access, as well as chronic disease management and disease surveillance using remote patient monitoring. As technology platforms become more interoperable, mHealth has the potential to help address India's growing healthcare needs through lower costs and increased convenience compared to traditional in-person care models.
The document discusses the virtual care/telehealth market. It notes that the market size is projected to grow significantly between 2020-2026. It then summarizes the key points about telehealth, including how it uses technology to expand access to healthcare and enable virtual consultations and remote patient monitoring. Major trends in the industry include integrating artificial intelligence, developing specialized telehealth platforms, and adopting hybrid care models. Recent news highlights policy updates, strategic partnerships, investments in startups, and expanding telehealth services to post-acute care.
Apps for health mohawk college presentationZakir Hussain
Zakir Hussain, CEO and founder of Velo Mobile Health, gave a presentation on transforming global healthcare systems through mobile health applications. He discussed how mHealth apps are being adopted in both developed countries like Canada as well as developing nations, but noted there are differences in adoption drivers between these contexts. Hussain also outlined the opportunities for scalable, patient-centric mHealth solutions that can help integrate mobile technologies into healthcare delivery globally.
“Even though the planning commission has increased its spending on health from 1.2 percent of GDP to 2.4
percent in the next Five Year Plan, the health sector clearly needs more innovative methods for delivering
healthcare at affordable prices. mHealth offers one such method by combining IT and Telecom with credible
healthcare delivery. Mediphone “tele triage service” by HealthFore, in partnerhip with Airtel, is one such
innovation.”
This document discusses maximizing the impact of mHealth services for maternal and child health. It notes that almost 3 million baby deaths could be prevented each year with low-cost care, and that maternal mortality remains high. The document outlines 4 key drivers to scaling mHealth: reducing fragmentation, supporting scale through integration of mHealth and mobile money, replicating best practices across countries and diseases, and aligning health and business goals. It also lists speakers for an mHealth webinar and resources on the topic.
Telemedicine refers to providing medical care remotely using technology. It allows doctors to consult with patients via video calls without being physically present. While telemedicine provides benefits of expanded access to care, there are also challenges preventing its wider adoption. Unclear policies, expensive technology, fewer in-person visits, and concerns around data privacy, security, and ethics pose impediments to the growth of telemedicine and digital health.
This document discusses eHealth and its importance in addressing challenges facing healthcare systems. It makes three key points:
1) Healthcare systems are under pressure due to aging populations, chronic diseases, budget cuts and changing workforce. eHealth can help increase efficiency, accessibility and quality of care.
2) eHealth involves various digital health applications that empower patients, enable remote care and information sharing between providers. This represents a shift from cure-focused to prevention and patient-centered care.
3) For eHealth to scale up, it must be integrated into organizational strategies and daily healthcare practices. Successful digital transformations require leadership commitment, change management, and business model adaptation. Standardization and interoperability are also important to accelerate

"Does Foreign Direct Investment Negatively Affect Preservation of Culture in the Global South? Case Studies in Thailand and Cambodia."
Do elements of globalization, such as Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), negatively affect the ability of countries in the Global South to preserve their culture? This research aims to answer this question by employing a cross-sectional comparative case study analysis utilizing methods of difference. Thailand and Cambodia are compared as they are in the same region and have a similar culture. The metric of difference between Thailand and Cambodia is their ability to preserve their culture. This ability is operationalized by their respective attitudes towards FDI; Thailand imposes stringent regulations and limitations on FDI while Cambodia does not hesitate to accept most FDI and imposes fewer limitations. The evidence from this study suggests that FDI from globally influential countries with high gross domestic products (GDPs) (e.g. China, U.S.) challenges the ability of countries with lower GDPs (e.g. Cambodia) to protect their culture. Furthermore, the ability, or lack thereof, of the receiving countries to protect their culture is amplified by the existence and implementation of restrictive FDI policies imposed by their governments.
My study abroad in Bali, Indonesia, inspired this research topic as I noticed how globalization is changing the culture of its people. I learned their language and way of life which helped me understand the beauty and importance of cultural preservation. I believe we could all benefit from learning new perspectives as they could help us ideate solutions to contemporary issues and empathize with others.

2. Elemental Economics - Mineral demand.pdfNeal Brewster
After this second you should be able to: Explain the main determinants of demand for any mineral product, and their relative importance; recognise and explain how demand for any product is likely to change with economic activity; recognise and explain the roles of technology and relative prices in influencing demand; be able to explain the differences between the rates of growth of demand for different products.
OJP data from firms like Vicinity Jobs have emerged as a complement to traditional sources of labour demand data, such as the Job Vacancy and Wages Survey (JVWS). Ibrahim Abuallail, PhD Candidate, University of Ottawa, presented research relating to bias in OJPs and a proposed approach to effectively adjust OJP data to complement existing official data (such as from the JVWS) and improve the measurement of labour demand.
Vicinity Jobs’ data includes more than three million 2023 OJPs and thousands of skills. Most skills appear in less than 0.02% of job postings, so most postings rely on a small subset of commonly used terms, like teamwork.
Laura Adkins-Hackett, Economist, LMIC, and Sukriti Trehan, Data Scientist, LMIC, presented their research exploring trends in the skills listed in OJPs to develop a deeper understanding of in-demand skills. This research project uses pointwise mutual information and other methods to extract more information about common skills from the relationships between skills, occupations and regions.
