Well, it can be a nightmare when under this description is hidden a few-years-old project that is still under construction and can’t be used by businesses/users even though it’s kinda “working.” Yep, this means a lot of mess and a few more years of addressing legacy code even before going to production. Yay, what fun! But even if you’re lost in the darkest forest, there is hope. Always. This session covers the sins that lead to situations such as no product vision, gold-plating, and too big a backlog and prescribes cures for them

In this session, I'll discuss distilling data to its base: numbers. And I’ll treat design, presentation, and interaction as enhancement. Mirroring the mobile-first approach to responsive design, we represent data <table>-first, and rely on web technologies as a presentation layer. This way, we can build scalable, smart, maintainable visualizations.
When we create for the web, we design and code for an audience that no longer is consuming on a traditional computer screen. By 2015, more people will access the internet via mobile devices than on traditional computers. This is as disruptive as the shift from physical to digital content, and we, as content creators, need to evolve to stay relevant in this new mobile-driven landscape.

Artificial Intelligence projects differ from conventional software projects in important ways. During this webinar presented on Monday 18 September, it discussed how to prepare for the demands of data management, QA, and stakeholder expectations. Reviewing the challenges of hidden bias and artificial stupidity, and how they can impact project risk and compliance. They broke down the three major kinds of AI projects, discussing challenges specific to those, and share “Pro Tips” for handling them. The goal of an interactive discussion was achieved, providing assistance for project managers to be more effective in the rapidly emerging world of AI-enabled organisations.
AI has been presented as a silver bullet to solve all problems, but the (very) public launch of ChatGPT (Microsoft) and Bard (Google) has highlighted that AI is suitable for some tasks and not necessarily all. So what does all this hoopla mean for project managers?

Security is also a critical challenge to address, as many IoT endpoints are vulnerable yet universally accessible. Network functions virtualization (NFV) and software-defined networking (SDN) will be important to enable the network slicing needed to support IoT in 5G networks.

Defeat feature gluttony
Feature gluttony, or adding too many features to a product, can negatively impact the product in several ways. It can increase complexity, decrease user happiness as users can't find what they need, and make the backlog and roadmap difficult to manage. The document provides tips on how to address feature gluttony, such as cleaning up the backlog, creating a product tree to categorize features, using story points for estimates, and focusing on delivering business value and managing risk. Deletion of unneeded features is also suggested.

Defeat feature gluttony

Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity server
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).

High performance Serverless Java on AWS- GoTo Amsterdam 2024
Java is for many years one of the most popular programming languages, but it used to have hard times in the Serverless community. Java is known for its high cold start times and high memory footprint, comparing to other programming languages like Node.js and Python. In this talk I'll look at the general best practices and techniques we can use to decrease memory consumption, cold start times for Java Serverless development on AWS including GraalVM (Native Image) and AWS own offering SnapStart based on Firecracker microVM snapshot and restore and CRaC (Coordinated Restore at Checkpoint) runtime hooks. I'll also provide a lot of benchmarking on Lambda functions trying out various deployment package sizes, Lambda memory settings, Java compilation options and HTTP (a)synchronous clients and measure their impact on cold and warm start times.

The meet-up will be hosted by Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), a research university specializing in engineering science & technology.
Power Grid Model
The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.

Chris Jones, Director of Product Management at BrainChip , presents the “Temporal Event Neural Networks: A More Efficient Alternative to the Transformer” tutorial at the May 2024 Embedded Vision Summit.
The expansion of AI services necessitates enhanced computational capabilities on edge devices. Temporal Event Neural Networks (TENNs), developed by BrainChip, represent a novel and highly efficient state-space network. TENNs demonstrate exceptional proficiency in handling multi-dimensional streaming data, facilitating advancements in object detection, action recognition, speech enhancement and language model/sequence generation. Through the utilization of polynomial-based continuous convolutions, TENNs streamline models, expedite training processes and significantly diminish memory requirements, achieving notable reductions of up to 50x in parameters and 5,000x in energy consumption compared to prevailing methodologies like transformers.
Integration with BrainChip’s Akida neuromorphic hardware IP further enhances TENNs’ capabilities, enabling the realization of highly capable, portable and passively cooled edge devices.
