ENABLING PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION
Abstract:
The following case study demonstrates how the deployed mesh network
supports advanced remote management of Delhi Metro train functions; by
enabling the functionality of a remote wireless data downloading system for
Train Fault Data (TFD).
Solution:
Seamless and reliable transmission of data between trains and the yards
management and maintenance team required a mission critical system with high
availability and virtually zero downtime. In order to facilitate this requirement
a comprehensive mesh network was developed utilizing proprietary mesh
networking devices and antennae.
Deployment:
The project encompassed a total of 48 trains for Delhi Metro Lines 5 and 6. A
Train Integrated Management System (TIMS Unit) was installed in the engine
bay at both ends of each of the trains. Each train was then equipped with two
mesh antennae. The devices affixed to the trains will communicate with the
maintenance terminals utilizing TCP/IP protocols as in a client-server
environment. Once the data transmission between the trains and the
maintenance terminals is completed, the connection will automatically
terminate. Only after the submission of train data and approval from the yard
can the trains depart. Upon reaching the next station, the trains will again
transmit data to the maintenance terminals, await approval and then depart.
This tiered process allows for complete transparency to enable remote
maintenance monitoring and scheduling for the 48 trains in use.

The utilization and deployment
of a mesh network throughout
Delhi Metro Lines 5 and 6 has
improved maintenance
protocols, scheduling, and
transparency of vital train
functions and most importantly
the efficiency of the 48 trains
in use. The wireless transmission
of Train Fault Data (TFD) allows
for real time access to TFD
enabling instantaneous
resolution and management of
any issues affecting effective
operation of the specified
trains.
