Defining Safety Accountability

Undefined organizational structures can lead to breakdowns in communication that leads to lack of accountability. Therefore programs may suffer or fail. The bottom line, no matter how you look at it, management set priorities and what is on top of the list gets done. As we have discussed in a previous sesssions, safety must become a core value that is built into the management system. Priorities change as fast as time, but a value, once established, will be less apt to change with shifting priorities. This is one of the most important concepts that management must understand. This is how the culture is created and will continue to function and improve.

Changing a corporate safety culture requires systemic engagement from leadership down to employees and can't be accomplished through rhetoric alone. Leaders who try to change the culture solely on their own or without input from others will only create compliance, not real culture change. The article recommends complementing the existing culture rather than trying to overhaul it. It suggests identifying informal influencers, having safety conversations to understand subcultures, and instilling safety as a value through behaviors modeled by leaders and repeated by all employees. Focus on a few key behaviors at a time that fit the current culture and reinforce them until they become routine.

Value vs. Priority To understand why, you have to understand the difference between a value and a priority. A priority is defined as an established right to a certain higher degree of importance or precedence. In other words, something is more important than something else. A value, on the other hand, is a fundamental belief that guides your attitudes, choices, and actions in all respects. If you think of safety as a priority, you think of it as more important than other factors, but that’s mostly a statement of relativity. If you think of safety as a core value, you think of it as a guiding principle behind everything you do. Safety as a priority treats safety as another item on the to-do list, albeit an important item. Safety as a core value treats safety as the most important item. More than that, safety is the commonality behind every choice and action. Think of it this way, our priorities change depending on the situation but our core values usually don’t. How Does Safety Become a Culture? Successful safety cultures have several things in common. They have procedures that are written well and that are easy to understand and follow at all levels of the organization. They have leadership who interacts with employees and who quickly resolve identified hazards. And lastly, in a good safety culture, safety isn’t managed from one injury to the next nor is the success of the culture managed by injury rates. If you’re like many companies, you understand the value of a safety culture but may not know how to make the transition away from managing safety from one injury to the next or judging success based on incident rates. The key is thinking of safety the right way, not as a priority but as a value and having meaningful safety activities and discussions all the time, not just immediately after someone has an injury. Focusing on the activities that surround identifying and resolving hazards rather than on how many injuries you’ve had is another way to improve the safety culture. Establishing Safety as a Core Value How do you establish safety as a core value? The good news is that if your company has a well written safety program, you’re already on the right path to building a good safety culture. But to bring your program one step closer to thinking of safety as a value, you have to be willing to empower your employees to put themselves and their safety before production and sales. This means empowering employees to do the right things and not penalizing them for it when they do. Another way to establish safety as a core value is to view it just like you view every other department. Sales, quality, production, engineering, etc., they all have a seat at the table—and so should safety. In an organization with a world class safety program, safety is as much a part of the conversation as any other department. This is only effective if you can get everyone to share in the mentality that for safety to be a core value, it has to be built

The process of applying constructive feedback presents a significant learning curve for managers of all stripes. While an approach to management through radical candor has provided a powerful framework for building thoughtful teams ready to engage in the rigor of high achievement, a significant challenge is still presented to those whose roles are defined more so by driving changes to operations rather than managing a particular function. Our modern economy demands that we train more and more managers to adopt the mindset, demeanor, and skills of great change managers in addition to project management or traditional management skills. No longer are managers asked to simply adopt a post within a hierarchy and lead teams with skills and a mission bound by a traditional functional role. Today, more managers are being asked to bring together diverse stakeholder constituencies to execute infrequent projects with high stakes outcomes, many of which call for organizations -- or associations of organizational leaders with competing interests -- to make critical changes to their operations and, subsequently, aspects of their culture. In these environments, managers like us have significant constraints on their time, capacity to build reciprocal relationships, and authority over individual actors. Yet, at the same time, we are required to persuasively communicate the need for changes that will affect the long-term outcomes for our colleagues and our organizations. This requires the capacity for managers to master a feedback process in which they listen, seek to clarify and understand their colleagues, while also offering a compelling argument for the adoption of a new direction or set of practices. This process requires managers who can exemplify excellence in culture-building as well as providing feedback with individual members. We call this process managing "The Tide".

This study examines the profound emotional, psychological, and professional impacts on students engaged in pro-Palestine protests, focusing on Generation Z's (Gen-Z) activism dynamics. This paper explores the significant sacrifices made by these students and even the professors supporting the pro-Palestine movement, with a focus on recent global movements. Through an in-depth analysis of printed and electronic media, the study examines the impacts of these sacrifices on the academic and personal lives of those involved. The paper highlights examples from various universities, demonstrating student activism's long-term and short-term effects, including disciplinary actions, social backlash, and career implications. The researchers also explore the broader implications of student sacrifices. The findings reveal that these sacrifices are driven by a profound commitment to justice and human rights, and are influenced by the increasing availability of information, peer interactions, and personal convictions.
