2. What makes a film British?
O Who provides the funding, the nationality of
the production company, in the order of their
involvement (how much funding they provide)

O There are now two key criteria for a
production to qualify as a Brit pic: 70% of a
film's budget must be spent in Britain, and
70% of the money allocated to labour must go
to either European or Commonwealth citizens.

3. The Cultural Test
O For a film to be classed as “British”, it
must past a cultural test. The film must
score at least 16/31 points to pass.
O There are four sections to the cultural test,
which are then made up of more
elements.
4. Section A – Cultural Content
MAXIMUM POSSIBLE POINTS: 18
O A1 – Film set in the UK or EEA – 4
POINTS.
O A2 – Lead characters British or EEA
citizens/residents – 4 POINTS.
O A3 – Film based on British or EEA subject
matter or underlying material – 4 POINTS.
O A4 – Original dialogue recorded mainly in
English or UK indigenous language or
EEA language – 6 POINTS.
5. Section B – Cultural
Contribution
MAXIMUM POSSIBLE POINTS: 4
O The film demonstrates British creativity,
heritage and/or diversity – 4 POINTS.
6. Section C- Cultural Hubs
MAXIMUM POSSIBLE POINTS: 5
O C1 – MAXIUM FOUR POINTS IN TOTAL
a) At least 50% of the principle photography or
SFX takes place in the UK – 2 POINTS.
b) At least 50% of the VFX takes place in the
UK – 2 POINTS.
c) An extra 2 POINTS can be rewarded if at
least 80% principal photography or VFX or
SFX takes place in the UK.
O C2 – Music Recording/Audio Post
