In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

Unified in Mind
Get enough people together and a clash of personalities
and ideas will occur. It’s human nature. Not excusable, but
certainly a reality. It doesn’t matter for what reason people
come together. This trend is consistent. That’s what makes
the call of the New Testament to be of the same mind so
stunning (1 Cor. 1:10; Rom. 15:5). On the surface, it may
seem impossible. And yet, the expectation of God and His
Word is that being of the same mind is possible. How is
this achievable since there are differences of mind even in
the body of Christ?
We must ask, are the differences of mind based on things
that pertain to true unity in Christ, or are they based on
matters of personal liberty as permitted by the Bible?
Differences of mind that pertain to true unity in Christ
are not differences that we can ignore. When Christians
are not of the same mind according to Christ, they have
no true unity (Rom. 15:5). There cannot be division and
must be a common mind concerning essential doctrinal
issues (1 Cor. 1:10; Eph. 4:4-6). People often think that
such strictness when it comes to essential doctrine (Eph.
4:4-6) is an unnecessary cause of division. But according
to Scripture, the opposite is true: a more precise
understanding of Scriptural doctrines is the key to
achieving unity in the faith and in Christ (Eph. 4:13-15).
As we see in Acts 15, when Jewish Christian were
trying to require the Gentile Christians to get circumcised
and observe the Old Law in order to be saved (Acts 15:1,
5), the church stepped in to resolve the issue. They did
not allow that false doctrine to stand, and they pursued
uncompromising unity. By dealing directly with this
essential doctrinal dispute and by not glossing over it, they
were all able to become unified in one mind (Acts 15:25).
Likewise, today, we cannot have true unity without it be
centered in Christ’s teaching, regardless of what others do.
But we cannot make matters of Christian liberty a ground
for separation or disunity. Rom. 14:5-6 spells out that
matters of liberty should be up to each individual’s
conscience. In other words, it’s ok for each person to have
a different mind in matters of liberty. However, never
at the expense of a weaker Christians conscience (Rom.
14:19-21). Most importantly, those things which are a
matter of personal Christian liberty must be defined by the
Word of God and not by ourselves.
In essential matters of Biblical unity, Christians must be
“united in spirit, intent on one purpose” (Phil. 2:2). When
there is a difference of mind in matters of personal
Christian liberty, we must be “showing tolerance for one
another in love…” (Eph. 4:2). When we make Christ’s
Word our center and basis of unity, then we are truly
unified in mind, even when we have differences of mind
about other things.
