Doing PRODUCTs in Large Organizations
- Empower people: Create stable teams
- Focus on value: Organizing around value
- Flow, …flow faster!: Product development flow

Lean Startup has revolutionized the startup movement. Startup world is looking like more scientific these days. Because of that reason, a flood of people are trying their hands by opening new startups. However is there anything to learn from Lean Startup for enterprises using agile methodologies currently? This session tries to answer the same - ranging from how to use Lean Startup techniques as part of Agile Product Ownership to changing current Agile practices focused towards validated learning and customer development.
Take away for audience from this session is:
* How Agile Product Management can scientifically define, what exactly to build and why?
* How some important Agile practices need to improvise themselves based on Validated Learning and Customer Development concepts of Lean Startup?
* Instead of building the MVP or product features directly and finding out later that customers don't need them, finding that out sometimes without writing even a single line of code or with minimal investment and resources.

How to make SAFe really SAFE Scaling Agile using Pull/Invite rather than Push...Yuval Yeret
https://agile2016.sched.org/event/6ecx/how-to-make-safe-really-safe-scaling-agile-using-pullinvite-rather-than-pushmandate-yuval-yeret
Abstract:
The Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe(tm)) is a powerful and popular framework for implementing agile at large scale across the enterprise.
In this talk we will examine some dangerous Agile at Scale implementation anti-patterns from real-world cases I've been involved in such as:
Planned/Mandate-based implementation across the enterprise - Pushing implementations onto people regardless of their interest/motivation to change.
Prescribed-based implementation - Either by the book or as designed by a central committee or an external consultant.
Total focus on practices starting from training all the way through assessment/metrics and lack of attention to spirit/principles.
Expecting every group in the organization to work the same way and implement change the same way.
We will then look at some healthier alternatives I used to drive more successful & sustainable change in several organizations. You will learn some concrete techniques that help live up to the Lean/Agile principles of respecting and engaging people.
Using SAFe as the specific backdrop for discussion, we will review field-proven ideas such as pull-based crossing the chasm approach to implementation, use of open space as part of the different SAFe ceremonies, and how Open Space Agility can combine with SAFe.
Note that the ideas and practices have also been tried with other Scaled Agile approaches such as Enterprise Kanban, LeSS.
Learning Outcomes:
Get familiar with some scaled agile implementation anti-patterns related to push/mandate.
Understand when to choose pull/invitation as a healthier more sustainable and successful alternative.
Get some concrete techniques to bring pull/invitation into a scaled agile implementation approach - focusing on SAFe 1-2-3 implementation approach specifically.
Have a high-level understanding of how to implement SAFe using "Open Space Technology".
Understand how to apply these ideas to any Scaled Agile approach (not just SAFe)
Learn more about the scaled Agile Framework + scaling Agile. After a short introduction to several frameworks that aim to support the scaling of Agile (DAD, LeSS, SAFe®), this power point presentation from our webinar dives deeper into the details of the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe®). Find the truth behind the often cited sentence “As Scrum is to the Agile team, SAFe® is to the Agile enterprise.”

Please join us on Wednesday January 27 in Burlington MA starting at 6:30 pm as senior enterprise agility coach Yuval Yeret describes several techniques that can be used to produce a lasting and productive adoption of the Scaled Agile Framework.
The Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) is a powerful and popular framework for implementing agile at large scale across the enterprise. However many organizations see their implementation of SAFe stall and even backfire since the adoption is mandated from its organizational leaders, instead of engaged teams participating and choosing their SAFe.
In this talk we will examine some dangerous implementation anti-patterns as well as healthier alternatives. You will learn some concrete techniques that help live up to the Lean/SAFe principles of respecting and engaging people. We will discuss field-proven ideas such as pull-based crossing the chasm approach to implementation, use of open space as part of the different SAFe ceremonies, and how Open Space Agility can combine with SAFe.

During a visit to LeanKit (The company behind the awesome visualization kanban tool LeanKit Kanban) this week I was asked to deliver a very short overview of SAFe, what trends I see in the market around it, how it connects to Kanban, etc. Here it is... Note this isn't self-explanatory. So if you're interested in what I meant to say here, reach out. Maybe I'll follow up with a blog post at some time if there's enough interest.

Toolset for Creating a Potentially Shippable Product Increment by Mohammad Na...Agile ME
Many organizations compromise on the quality of product in pursuit of quick time to market and in greed of cramming more features in. The end result is the exact opposite of a “shippable product increment” at the end of each Sprint. Tactics like employing several hardening sprints towards the end of release cycle to prepare the product for release are far too common. In a way, this anti-pattern bemoans a waterfall approach and is in total contrast to the Agile Manifesto and the Principals behind the Agile Manifesto. In this talk, we will discuss the set of tools that an agile team can employ to continue delivering a potentially shippable product increment at the end of every Sprint.
Agile ME Meetup: Agile A-Z - Chapter 1: The Product OwnerRasmus Runberg
What is Agile? - What are the roles in Agile development? How do we implement or scale with Agile? Which Agile processes should I use in my case?
There are so many questions about Agile, so in a series of Meetups, we will try to uncover as many aspects of Agile as possible, in order to provide the full overview of Agility in organisations. The form will be a combination of presentations and discussions, so everyone has a chance to address their thoughts on the matter.
In the first chapter, we had a more "general" talk about what Agile software development is, and the value behind it. What does it mean to be Agile? - In this chapter we will go more into the details with the Product Owner.
As a Product Owner you’re responsible for your product, together with your team and the client setting the direction of the product, making sure everyone is happy with the outcome. In this chapter, we will cover the following topics:
• Vision
• Backlog
• Epic and User Stories
• Agile Planning

As scale and distribution set in at organisations that have strong growth, spreading the lean and agile culture becomes even more important to keep teams aligned and motivated. At Rally, we have fallen in love with A3 Thinking and templates to address this challenge. We do new hire bootcamps, employee trainings and walk the talk, but A3’s seem to be the most effective tool for helping us spread lean thinking and empower teams to share their problems and strategies. This talk will tell our story, challenge the audience and provide some education on these powerful tools for enabling teams to collaborate, steer and take action.

Session "Comparing Ways to Scale Agile" at the Agile Product and Project Manager Meetup in Melbourne, Australia.
These days organisations are looking for support to scale their Agile environment. There’s a difference between having one Agile team on its own, or to have several Agile teams providing value to the customer and interacting with each other.
This session will give an overview and comparison of all the different Agile scaling approaches out there, i.e.:
* Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe)
* Evidence-Based Management (EBMgt)
* Disciplined Agile Delivery (DAD)
* Enterprise Transition Framework (ETF)
* Large-Scale Scrum (LeSS)

Agile Economics - Is It Cheaper Or More Expensive To Use AgileVaidas Adomauskas
Common sense says that doing things in Aglie way (small iterations, re-testing all the time, not having functional departments) is way more expensive than doing things the traditional way. So why more and more companies choose Agile methods? How to calculate if it is more expensive or cheaper to use Agile? I will share few real projects and products examples and we will draw conclusions about Agile economics from them.

Agile development is a software development methodology that prioritizes flexibility, collaboration, and customer satisfaction. It emerged as a response to the limitations of traditional, rigid development methodologies, such as the Waterfall model. Agile focuses on iterative and incremental development, allowing teams to respond quickly to changing requirements and deliver a product that meets the customer's needs. Here's a detailed description of Agile development:
Principles of Agile Development:
Individuals and Interactions Over Processes and Tools:
Agile emphasizes the importance of communication and collaboration among team members. While processes and tools are essential, the primary focus is on fostering effective human interactions.
Working Software Over Comprehensive Documentation:
Agile values a working product as the primary measure of progress. While documentation is necessary, the emphasis is on delivering a functional solution to the customer.
Customer Collaboration Over Contract Negotiation:
Agile promotes a collaborative approach with the customer throughout the development process. Rather than relying on fixed contracts, Agile teams engage in ongoing discussions to ensure the product aligns with customer expectations.
Responding to Change Over Following a Plan:
Agile recognizes that change is inevitable in software development. Instead of rigidly following a plan, Agile teams adapt to changing requirements, allowing for more flexibility and responsiveness.
Agile Methodologies:
Scrum:
Scrum is one of the most popular Agile frameworks. It organizes work into fixed-length iterations called sprints, typically lasting two to four weeks. The development team works collaboratively to deliver a potentially shippable product increment at the end of each sprint.
Kanban:
Kanban is a visual management method that emphasizes continuous delivery and flow of work. Work items are represented on a Kanban board, and teams pull work through different stages, focusing on limiting work in progress to enhance efficiency.
Extreme Programming (XP):
XP is an Agile methodology that emphasizes technical excellence and close collaboration between developers and customers. Practices include test-driven development, continuous integration, pair programming, and frequent releases.
Key Concepts in Agile Development:
User Stories:
Agile projects use user stories to describe features from an end user's perspective. These stories help prioritize development efforts and ensure that features align with customer needs.
Sprints:
In Scrum, development occurs in fixed-length iterations called sprints. Sprints provide a consistent and manageable timeframe for delivering incremental improvements to the product.
Product Backlog:
The product backlog is a prioritized list of features and tasks that need to be addressed in the project. It is dynamic and evolves as the project progresses.
Daily Stand-ups:
Daily stand-up meetings, or daily scrums, are brief, time-bo

The Future Present of Scrum (Agile Tour Dublin 2016)Gunther Verheyen
Scrum starts with Done. The Future Present of Scrum is to start enacting Scrum.
At the Agile Tour Dublin 2016 Gunther Verheyen, seasoned Scrum practitioner, discussed the past and current challenge of Scrum of creating Done Increments, and the future challenge to start enacting Scrum.
Discovery Model—An Approach for Agile at ScaleCA Technologies
When we started our transition to an agile model, many things consultants told us did not make sense. Such as “it is a major culture shift,” “you will need a scaled framework” and “it is easy to learn hard to master.”
During this session you will learn when ADP reached those hurdles and what we are doing to overcome them.
For more information, please visit http://cainc.to/Nv2VOe
People everywhere are talking about scaling agile and different frameworks and ideas to support this. Fancy and rather complicated scaling agile frameworks have not only taken shape but probably have started becoming mainstream. All these frameworks apparently claim to facilitate communication and collaboration.
However, as group size rises, all sorts of issues emerges. Even if more people provide a greater pool of resources, they also require greater amounts of coordination and management, to the point where size becomes an impediment. Scaling up might trigger not only “coordination loss” & “motivation loss” but also “relational loss”.
Small teams are agile!! I guess, thats the reason Scrum urges to work in small teams. As small as 5 to 9 members. So let’s explore if there is a possibility to scale down instead of scaling up? And, how can you scale down? What does it take? Has anyone scaled down yet? Is there a structure to scale down? Can it be replicated?

Your User Stories Are Too Big: Yes, They Are!TechWell
When a user story is too big, it is harder to understand, estimate, and implement successfully. Some teams break the “business story” into “technical stories” but this generally doesn’t help because most or all of the technical stories need to be completed before there is anything meaningful for the stakeholders. There is a better way. Chris Sims teaches four simple yet powerful techniques for breaking big stories into smaller stories that are meaningful to stakeholders and deliver incremental business value. For each of the four techniques, Chris models the technique and then gives delegates time to work in small groups to write and split stories. Chris concludes with a debriefing in which he answers questions and explores when each technique is most appropriate. In his years of agile coaching, Chris has never found a real-world story that could not be split using at least one of these techniques.
Disciplined Agile Outsourcing: Making it work for both the customer and the s...Scott W. Ambler
Outsourcing projects suffer from two significant yet easily addressed problems. First, the customer’s instincts for how to run an outsourced project are more likely to hurt rather than help them. Second, service providers (SPs) prove to be little more than order takers that don’t have the courage to negotiate a winning strategy. The Disciplined Agile Delivery (DAD) process decision framework provides the foundation needed to succeed at “agile offshoring” by addressing the needs of both the customer and the SP. DAD is a goal-driven, hybrid agile, full delivery methodology that is enterprise aware and scalable. DAD provides a foundation from which you can tailor a viable strategy for disciplined agile outsourcing. This presentation explores strategies for effectively initiating and governing an outsourced IT delivery project in an agile manner. Outsourcing introduces a collection of risks that can be uniquely addressed with a disciplined agile strategy.
During this presentation you will learn:
• What the Disciplined Agile Delivery (DAD) framework is.
• The risks associated with outsourcing.
• Disciplined agile outsourcing from the point of view of the customer.
• Disciplined agile outsourcing from the point of view of the service provider.
• What you need to do to succeed at disciplined agile outsourcing.
• Industry statistics regarding agile outsourcing in practice
• Criteria to determine if you’re ready for outsourcing IT delivery projects.

In software engineering, the right architecture is essential for robust, scalable platforms. Wix has undergone a pivotal shift from event sourcing to a CRUD-based model for its microservices. This talk will chart the course of this pivotal journey.
Event sourcing, which records state changes as immutable events, provided robust auditing and "time travel" debugging for Wix Stores' microservices. Despite its benefits, the complexity it introduced in state management slowed development. Wix responded by adopting a simpler, unified CRUD model. This talk will explore the challenges of event sourcing and the advantages of Wix's new "CRUD on steroids" approach, which streamlines API integration and domain event management while preserving data integrity and system resilience.
Participants will gain valuable insights into Wix's strategies for ensuring atomicity in database updates and event production, as well as caching, materialization, and performance optimization techniques within a distributed system.
Join us to discover how Wix has mastered the art of balancing simplicity and extensibility, and learn how the re-adoption of the modest CRUD has turbocharged their development velocity, resilience, and scalability in a high-growth environment.

How to Position Your Globus Data Portal for Success Ten Good PracticesGlobus
Science gateways allow science and engineering communities to access shared data, software, computing services, and instruments. Science gateways have gained a lot of traction in the last twenty years, as evidenced by projects such as the Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI) and the Center of Excellence on Science Gateways (SGX3) in the US, The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and its platforms in Australia, and the projects around Virtual Research Environments in Europe. A few mature frameworks have evolved with their different strengths and foci and have been taken up by a larger community such as the Globus Data Portal, Hubzero, Tapis, and Galaxy. However, even when gateways are built on successful frameworks, they continue to face the challenges of ongoing maintenance costs and how to meet the ever-expanding needs of the community they serve with enhanced features. It is not uncommon that gateways with compelling use cases are nonetheless unable to get past the prototype phase and become a full production service, or if they do, they don't survive more than a couple of years. While there is no guaranteed pathway to success, it seems likely that for any gateway there is a need for a strong community and/or solid funding streams to create and sustain its success. With over twenty years of examples to draw from, this presentation goes into detail for ten factors common to successful and enduring gateways that effectively serve as best practices for any new or developing gateway.

Climate Science Flows: Enabling Petabyte-Scale Climate Analysis with the Eart...Globus
The Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) is a global network of data servers that archives and distributes the planet’s largest collection of Earth system model output for thousands of climate and environmental scientists worldwide. Many of these petabyte-scale data archives are located in proximity to large high-performance computing (HPC) or cloud computing resources, but the primary workflow for data users consists of transferring data, and applying computations on a different system. As a part of the ESGF 2.0 US project (funded by the United States Department of Energy Office of Science), we developed pre-defined data workflows, which can be run on-demand, capable of applying many data reduction and data analysis to the large ESGF data archives, transferring only the resultant analysis (ex. visualizations, smaller data files). In this talk, we will showcase a few of these workflows, highlighting how Globus Flows can be used for petabyte-scale climate analysis.
Providing Globus Services to Users of JASMIN for Environmental Data AnalysisGlobus
JASMIN is the UK’s high-performance data analysis platform for environmental science, operated by STFC on behalf of the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). In addition to its role in hosting the CEDA Archive (NERC’s long-term repository for climate, atmospheric science & Earth observation data in the UK), JASMIN provides a collaborative platform to a community of around 2,000 scientists in the UK and beyond, providing nearly 400 environmental science projects with working space, compute resources and tools to facilitate their work. High-performance data transfer into and out of JASMIN has always been a key feature, with many scientists bringing model outputs from supercomputers elsewhere in the UK, to analyse against observational or other model data in the CEDA Archive. A growing number of JASMIN users are now realising the benefits of using the Globus service to provide reliable and efficient data movement and other tasks in this and other contexts. Further use cases involve long-distance (intercontinental) transfers to and from JASMIN, and collecting results from a mobile atmospheric radar system, pushing data to JASMIN via a lightweight Globus deployment. We provide details of how Globus fits into our current infrastructure, our experience of the recent migration to GCSv5.4, and of our interest in developing use of the wider ecosystem of Globus services for the benefit of our user community.
