Health Effects of Obesity
The dramatic increase in the prevalence of overweight and obesity in most countries has been
of great concern globally. This is estimated to be the cause of more than 3.4 million deaths

Health Effects of Obesity
The dramatic increase in the prevalence of overweight and
obesity in most countries has been
of great concern globally. This is estimated to be the cause of
more than 3.4 million deaths
worldwide, 4% of Years of Life Lost (YLL), and at least 4% of
Disability-Adjusted Life
Years (DALYs) all around the word. However, despite the
urgency of this problem, there are
still some noticeable gaps in what is known about this subject.
For instance prevalence of
obesity is most often estimated based on surveys or population
studies. Not only that data on
prevalence and trends are based on measurements of weight
4. rather than the body fat. This
increase in body mass presents public health challenges because
of attractive physical
appearance of thin bodies, and poor health outcomes of
overweight and obesity. Health
condition of obese persons is most often worse than people with
normal weight and the life
span of obese people is on average is shorter by two years.
Obesity is multi factorial
phenomena and associates with age, gender, ethnicity, levels of
leisure time, physical
activity, education, parity, economical and marital statuses,
smoking habits, alcohol
consumption, family history of obesity and dietary habits in
both men and women. In
compare to men, such determinant factors of obesity were
frequently accumulated in women,
the findings of several studies have shown that the incidence
and the prevalence of obesity in
women in many countries are higher than men. Obesity
substantially increases the risk of
four major health issues (Figure 1) which are physical health,
mental health, spiritual health
and social health. Obesity is the main causes of chronic illness
5. and risk of being obese is
increasing in women so this study will help to find out the
prevalence and contributing
factors about obesity so that the problem will be addressed. The
significant of this study will
include helping the women and other member of the society to
adopt healthy lifestyle and it
will help the nation to minimize obesity and thus helps in
reducing chronic illness.

6. Research proposal flow chart
1. Introduction
Obesity is a major public health problem and becomes an
important epidemic in both
developed and developing countries since an increase in the
risky lifestyles. Internationally,
7. rates of obesity are higher in women than in men. Given that
thinness ideals have become
deeply ingrained into our society and heavily promoted by the
mass media, diet industry and
fashion industry, it's not surprising to see widespread weight
stigmatization toward women,
even if they are not obese. For women, weight discrimination
has been associated with
poorer body image, low self-esteem, depression, anxiety and a
range of unhealthy eating
behaviors including binge eating. The research problem is, what
are the prevalence and the
contributing factors of obesity among the women?
2. Literature Review
The articles that supports my literature review are (Obesity and
women, 2016) and
(Djalalinia, Peykari, Qorbani, & Kelishadi, 2015). They both
explain as the body weight
alone is not a very sensitive indicator for defining obesity.
Factors such as age, sex,
height, lean muscle mass and body fat percentage are all
unaccounted for when using
weight on an individual level. Thus, weight alone should be
avoided as a standard for
8. assessing a person's relative risk for overweight and obesity.
Ideal body weight is an
unscientific measure, and can provide only an estimate of
appropriate weight. A simple
way to calculate ideal body weight for women is as follows: 100
lbs for the first 60 in (5
ft) plus 5 lbs for every additional inch.
3. Methodology
Research design is based on a descriptive cross sectional study.
The research procedures
used to identify select, process and analyze information applied
to understand why obesity is
higher to women. Data used to assess obesity prevalence and
trends are derived from a
wide variety of sources, including population surveys, school-
based assessments, clinical
and public health services administrative data and cohort
studies. Common setting in which
data procedures on obesity status are collected on women
between the age group of 30-50
years also only the women giving consent and willing to
participate will be included. The
study area will be in Muscat whereas the sample size will be
9. determined by literature review
and by statistical calculation. The sampling frame will be
obtained from healthy office. The
data collection will be through semi structure questionnaires.
The data will be collected by
interview and measurement. Weighing scale and measuring tape
will be used to calculate
body mass index (BMI). Reliability of tool will be done by
taking 150 samples and
calculated by using cronbach's alpha. The content validity of the
research tool for its
completeness and clarity will be maintained through literature
review and consultation with
concerned advisor, subject teacher, guides and experts. Data
will be analyzed using
statistical package for social science (SPSS). The Chi square
test and binary logistic
regression with categorical variable will be used. The ethical
issues will includes, formal
approval that will be obtained from the concerned authorities,
informed verbal consent will
be obtained from each respondent before giving the
questionnaire and the confidentiality
will be maintained throughout the study. The budget for this
11. The prevalence of overweight and obesity in women living in
poor places and
furthermore to identify certain behavioural, lifestyle and
physiological parameters
associated with body mass index (BMI) and blood pressure
(BP). There are few reports
relating to overweight and obesity to women. For this reason,
the present thesis attempts
to research the issue and its aim are to assess the subject matter
in some detail. The study
will be conducted among a group of 150 women. The average
age of women is between
30-50 years. The present thesis is a preliminary report and the
research is continuing at
the department of medical science.
5. Statement of Limitations
Sample will be selected only from one city, which will include
only women with age
12. between 30-50 years and the selected variables will be studied.
Available indexes do not
identify the percentage of body fat such as they do not
discriminate between muscle, fat
and bone. The fat-to-muscle ratio varies with age, gender,
ethnic group and race.
6. Conclusion
The aim of the research is to determine the prevalence and to
identify the contributing
factors of obesity to women. Also the contribution of finding
data to obesity research and
to describe the benefits and challenges encountered. The obesity
research is important
because obesity is a grave public health threat, more serious
even then opioid epidemic.
It's linked to chronic diseases including diabetes,
hyperlipidemia, high blood pressure,
cardiovascular diseases and cancer.
5
Research methodology steps
13. Overweight, obesity and their impacts in different dimension of
health must be must be
considered as one of the most important public health priority.
There is a need for
comprehensive strategies for prevention and control of this
pandemic. The contribution of
promoting factors of physical activity, changes in food types
and calorie consumption,
detecting and controlling the eating behavioral impairments,
and other relate factors of
overweight and obesity prevalence are some of the issues which
need further research. More
research is needed to better understand the nature and extent of
gender differences in
experiences of weight stigmatization. However, it does appear
that some differences may
exist, particularly that girls and women may have heightened
vulnerability in certain contexts
compared to boys and men. These differences are important to
be aware of, especially for
employers in the workplace and educators in schools, who can
intervene to help reduce
14. weight stigmatization in these settings and be prepared to offer
support to those facing
stigmatization, with the knowledge that girls and boys, or
women and men, may be impacted
by weight stigmatization in different ways.
Program Planning
The Study design is a descriptive crossectional study.
The study area is Muscat, the study population are
women, sampling method is multistage sampling ,
sample size is determined by literature review and
statistical calculation, sampling frame is obtained
from medical care office and the inclusion criteria
includes women between the age group of 30-50
years .
Survey Development
Tools and techniques of data
collection that will be used is semi
structured questionnaires also the
weighing scale and measuring tape
will be used to calculate BMI.
Survey Deployment
The pretesting will be done in 10% of the
sample size for the feasibility and
practicability of the tool. The Reliability
of tool will be done by taking 150
samples and calculated by using
cronbach’s alpha. The Validity will be
15. maintained through literature review and
consultation with concerned advisor.
Data Analysis
Data will be analyzed using
statistical package for social
science and chi square test
together with binary logistic
regression with categorical
variable will be used.
Reporting
Formal approval will be obtained
from the concerned authorities and
confidentiality will be maintained
throughout the study and later.
Consultation and Review
An obesity consultation involves a
comprehensive physical examination
includes a review of woman’s personal
and family medical histories to work for
underlying issues that may be
contributing to the condition.

17. Introduction
Electronic devices such as televisions, mobile phones and
computers are materials
used in many positive purposes. For example, gaining a
knowledge of what is
happening in the other parts of the world. Furthermore, learning
a new or developing
an already existing hobby or a language. Moreover,
communication between people
in this high-speed life using these electronics becomes easier
and faster. The question
of my research is ''Do these machines (electronic devices)
owned by people from
different age categories influence them in a negative way''?
Literature Review
-According to reference 1-a (mentioned at the end): too much
use of electronic
.makes the communication with their parents much
lesserdevices from teens
-Referring to reference 1-b (mentioned at the end): using
electronic devices by
teenagers in bed before sleeping leads to sleep difficulties and
therefore causing
18. .depression
-According to reference 2 (mentioned at the end): using
electronic devices (especially
the ones which are handle by hands) for long hours a day by
university students leads
.causing pain in it andhand irto hurting the
-Referring to reference 3 (mentioned at the end): children
setting on electronic devices
for long hours may face reading difficulties (dyslexia).
Methodology
-This research depends on a free online survey design.
-The topic of the questionnaire structure is ''Influence of
overusing electronic devices
on people from different age categories''.
-The questionnaire is designed to gather data from university
students and parents of
school-age students who like to participate.
-The number of participants (sample) allowed is 90 (30
university students, 60 parents
of school aged students of children and adolescences.
-They will be asked to answer 6 short questions about time
19. spent on electronic devices
a day, the general performance on exams, the average studying
hours per day, the
activities during spare time, how much time spent setting with
the family members or
friends, and the number of sleep hours at night a day.
2
-The online survey will be sent to the selected university
students, children's and
adolescences' parents via e-mail. The one who like to
participate can accesses easily
to a link to enter the survey.
- A psychologist, a paediatrician, a neurologist, and some
university professors will be
met to get real and scientific data.
Preliminary Data
I expect getting the following results:
1-Those pupils who spend the majority of their time using
electronic devices and
minor number of hours spent on studying:
20. Have generally a poor performance in their courses, spent their
free time on moving
from a social media application to another, they do not spent
enough time with their
family members or friends and they do not sleep enough hours
at night due to using
electronic devices to late time.
2-On the other hand, the learners who spend less hours on their
electronic devices and
more hours spent on studying:
Have a good overall performance in their university/school
subjects and spent their
free time on hobbies, setting with their family or meeting
friends, and they sleep
enough time at night.
Statement of limitations
My research will put the light on how dangerous is using
electronic devices for long
hours on: academic studying, sleeping enough at night, hobbies,
family relation, and
friendships for students based on the survey results and the
information got from the
21. exports mentioned in the last point of the methodology part
(above).
The weakness of my research can be: an online survey may not
be enough to get
trusted information from the participants.
The alternative can be: interviewing the students' teachers and
parents to get more
trusted and truth data.
Conclusion
To sum up, extensive use of electronic devices by children,
adolescences and
university students has a negative impact on their social life,
family relationship and
the level of performance in their study. Therefore, the usage of
these machines should
be lowered to avoid the mentioned issues.

24. Currently, as Oman is moving towards population growth and
witnessing a significant
development in several fields, the water consumption in the
country will be gradually affected.
Another major issue facing the country is the marine and coastal
pollution in and around the
country. Oman has a coastline of 1700 km long, which being
affected by oil pollution, this
pollution is caused by an operational discharge comes from
ships passing through the Gulf of
Oman, this is involved on the availability of desalinated water.
Along with this growth the water
becomes scarcer, thus the importance of how it is managed
grows vastly.
Introduction
• Determining water uses and finding a balance between humans
need and what
is needed in the environment are an essential procedure in the
sustainability of
water resources. The objectives of the study are to define the
issues in
managing water resources in Oman and to identify the potential
solutions.
This research will advantage to provide new water resource
alternatives and
better management of existing resources in Oman to give a
solution before
25. any problem emerge, in addition to raise awareness between
people about the
significance of water conservation.
Literature
Review
• According to a research (Ahmed, Prathapar, Al-Belushi, Al-
Busaidi & Al-
Haddabi, 2003), one of the options that can support to manage
water
resources in Oman is greywater, which is water draining from a
household
“greywater can be a cost effective alternative source of water;
and it can
be used to further sustainable development and resource
conservation
without compromising public health and environmental
quality”.ⅰ
• Seawater desalination is one of the main water sources for
coastal areas like
Muscat as stated in article (Al Barwani & Purnama, 2010) “To
manage the
future water demands in Oman, the Oman Power and Water
Procurement Company was established in 2005, and one of its
responsibilities is to procure the production of desalinated
water”.ⅱ
• As an arid and dry country Oman has limited water resources
that are going
to get depleted if it not managed better or if new source isn’t
explored in the
near future. Stated by a research (Ahmed & Mohammed, 1994),
“Water
availability could be increased through different technical
26. options. The
major concern is how can the society use and allocate water
resources
among its members.”ⅲ
Methodology
• For this study, the data will be collected and maintained from
different institutions such as the Ministry of Regional
Municipalities, & Water Resources and Oman Water Society.
The
data include types of water resources in Oman, statistics and
amounts of the existing water as well as the problems these
resources are facing. The collecting of data will be done in
several
steps beginning with the planning and followed by survey
development, survey deployment, data analysis, reporting, and
ending with Consultation & Review (Figure 1).
Preliminary
Data
• The growth in the population, as well as the development in
urban
and economic sectors increases the request for water and makes
water scarce in the country. The main problem in managing
water
resources that there is no balance between water usage and
water
abundance and availability as Oman is an arid and dry country.
Not protecting groundwater resources may cause water crisis as
well. In addition, resources (Well and falaj) must be developed
and maintained to save and protect water. Also, increase the
27. number of desalination plants and wastewater treatment plants
can
be effective in water management.
Statement of
Limitations
• The study approved that old methods of water resources must
be
maintained and developed to save water, in addition increasing
the
number of desalination plants and wastewater treatment plants
can
help to cover water demand within time. However, as a student
my research may would have possible limitations, like the lack
of
previous studies and reports on the topic, the nonresponding of
the employees who should fill in the questionnaires or the
difficulty in the communication with them while conducting the
surveys. In addition, the information found based on
questionnaires may be not factual.
Conclusion
• Water resources management is how we will preserve a
sustainable
balance between water demand and supply through the next
years,
as well as finding solutions to maintain water and protect its
resources. The management of Oman water resources is going to
be fundamental with the population growth the country is
currently
experiencing. It is recommended that water resources must be
preserved at the present time and for future. In order to reduce
water consumption, strategies and control programs have to be
established to help in conserving water and covers water
28. demands.
Research Methodology Chart:
The data will be collected by using
questionnaires and surveys distributed
among these companies and institutions.
Secondary data is going to be utilized from
previous related studies.
A questionnaires and surveys are chosen as
data collection tools. They will be used in a
closed format with a three-point scale of agree,
disagree and neutral, also some short answer
questions.
The questionnaires are going to be distributed
to a sample of 25 employees of different gender
and nationalities from different institutions to
examine the situation from different views.
Three assistants will be deployed to distribute
and conduct these surveys and questionnaires.
The data will be examined by the assistants and
compared to the previous annual reports done
by the same institutions to finally drew out the
major findings and conclusion.
29. The three assistants will then analyses and
present the data in tables, graphs and text
form as well as reporting the final results
out of the data they collected from the
surveys.
The information will be review back,
examined in consultation with the assistants
and evaluated again to ensure that the
information collected are correct.
