Inferring Peer Centrality in Socially-Informed Peer-to-Peer Systems
Social applications implemented on a peer-to-peer (P2P) architecture mine the social graph of their users for improved performance in search, recommendations, resource
sharing and others. In such applications, the social graph that connects their users is distributed on the peer-to-peer system: the traversal of the social graph translates to a socially-informed routing in the peer-to-peer layer.
In this work we introduce the model of a projection graph that is the result of mapping a social graph onto a peer-to-peer network. We analytically formulate the relation between metrics in the social graph and in the projection graph. We focus on three such graph metrics: degree centrality, node betweenness centrality, and edge betweenness centrality. We evaluate experimentally the feasibility of estimating these metrics in the projection graph from the metrics of the social graph. Our experiments on real networks show that when mapping communities of 50-150 users on a peer, there is an optimal organization of the projection graph with respect to degree and node betweenness centrality. In this range, the association between the properties of the social graph and the projection graph is the highest, and thus the properties of the (dynamic) projection graph can be inferred from
the properties of the (slower changing) social graph. We discuss the applicability of our findings to aspects of peer-to-peer systems such as data dissemination, social search, peer vulnerability, and data placement and caching.

Dissertation Social Network Sites
Ksenia Koroleva defended her dissertation on August 23rd, 2012. The dissertation examined the role of social network sites in creating information value and social capital. It contained four main sections: an introduction describing social network sites as communication mediums, two empirical studies on information value and network structure, implications and discussion. The dissertation used both qualitative and quantitative methods to study how factors like tie strength, social information, and network overlap impact information processing and value on social media platforms. The results showed that ratings increased information value while comments decreased it, and that information from strong ties was preferred, especially with less network overlap. Social information was also found to be more important for weaker ties.

The Semantic Web vision emerged with a promise to collect and interlink semantically relevant data from diverse sources in order to to achieve a full potential of the Web. After more than a decade of diligent research, it is the time to start summing up what has been accomplished and how mature Semantic Web research is, so that plans for the future can be charted. One of the key trails of a mature discipline is to have well-designed research methods allowing researchers to establish evidence about the effectiveness of the research ideas. It is equally important to to have knowledge translation methods that allow for transferring the established evidence to decision makers in practice. In this talk, we will first share some experience and challenges in conducting experiments in the area of the Semantic Web. We will next discuss findings of systematic reviews conducted to estimate the level of quality of the existing research results based on the criteria well-known in medical research and recently adopted in empirical software engineering. We will conclude the talk by discussing the importance and potential milestones for the Semantic Web in order to become an evidence-based discipline (similar to medicine or education) capable of producing strong research evidence transferable to practice.

Abstract:
The popularity of smartphones makes them the most suitable devices to ensure access to services provided by smart cities; furthermore, as one of the main features of the smart cities is the participation of the citizens in their governance, it is not unusual that these citizens generate and share their own data through their smartphones. But, how can we know if these data are reliable? How can identify if a given user and, consequently, the data generated by him/her, can be trusted? On this paper, we present how the IES Cities' platform integrates the PROV Data Model and the related PROV-O ontology, allowing the exchange of provenance information about user-generated data in the context of smart cities.

Collaboration with BIM: Stop being efficient, start being effective
This document discusses moving from being efficient to being effective in building information modeling (BIM) projects. It provides examples of highly detailed BIM projects using IFC data formats for modeling, quotations, rule checking, logistics, fire safety analysis, and simulations. Lessons learned include not letting the means become the goal, that data alone does not equal collaboration, and data is only useful when used effectively. The future of construction is predicted to have more available data, automation through robotics and niche applications, and a greater need for knowledge of both engineering and data. Organizations must learn to work effectively with increasingly complex technologies and changing processes rather than just focusing on efficiency.
GEO Desing + BIM Conference: Data sharing is not collaboration
Shared data and BIM models are not the same as collaboration. A shared data model refers to creating agreements on how data will be standardized and shared, not shared databases or model instances. True collaboration requires each party to focus first on their own work and understanding what information others need from them, rather than assuming shared access to data leads automatically to collaboration. Technology like cloud computing and work sharing supports coordination but does not replace the need for professionals to bring their expertise and craftsmanship to cooperatively solve problems.

CityGML and BIM

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.
