Professional summary
I completed an apprenticeship in Process Control Instrumentation in 1986 through AECI. I continued my
studies through Technical College whilst working as an Instrument Technician and obtained my Government
Electrical Engineer’s Certificate of Competence in 1990.
I then joined DLM as a Project Engineer and progressed to Engineering Manager of the company. DLM
specialise in Petroleum Gantry Automation, Tank Gauging and fuel Vehicle loading / offloading operations
with clients ranging from Shell Oil, British Petroleum, Total, Caltex and Engen.
I joined FWSA in 1994 and performed key roles in instrumentation engineering. My experience range from
DCS / ESD system specifications; field instrument process measurement of temperature, level, pressure,
flow, analytical and final control on-off actuated and control valves. Instrument interface with mechanical,
piping, electrical, civil works and process is defined on project instrument interface specifications. My work
experience include HAZOP / SIL reviews, Hazardous area requirements associated with Instrumentation,
P&ID preparation to define instrument measurement and control requirements, Instrument engineering and
design specifications, BDEP and EPC Instrument engineering and design document preparation and review,
construction supervision and instrumentation governance responsibilities. I performed design engineering
specifications combined with Site Instrumentation Engineer experience to obtain comprehensive EPCM
project experience. Site experience included engineering, requisitioning, construction supervision,
commissioning and preparation of site as-built drawings. Currently I have 23 years of experience at Amec
Foster Wheeler in BDEP and EPC projects primarily in the Petro Chemical field.
I was promoted to FWSA Chief Instrument Engineer in 2006 and provided corporate assistance to instrument
engineers and designers including individual mentoring, technical development, manpower planning,
recruitment and project governance on all FWSA projects. I continued to work as lead instrument engineer
performing activities as defined below on various projects in combination with my department responsibilities.
Instrumentation and Control deliverables per project include the following: Site verification, P&ID input,
Instrument Index, HAZOP attendance, SIL review, Instrument Data Sheets (Pressure, Level, Flow,
Temperature, Analytical, Valves), Field Instrument requisitions, Control System requisitions, Process
Automation principle diagram, Process Control functional specification, Range, Alarm & Trip schedules,
Cause & Effect diagrams, Control System Factory & Site acceptance testing, Instrument Inspections,
Contract requisition, Instrument / Electrical interface philosophy + specifications, Instrument / Mechanical
interface specification, GA drawing clarifications & ISO review, IS loop calculations, IA certifications,
Hazardous Area compliance verification, Drawing Index, Cable Block diagrams, Instrument Location
drawings, 3D Model – cable trays, junction boxes, in/on-line instruments, stands; Layout drawings,
Termination detail drawings, Racking & Routing drawings, Hook-up drawings (Process & Pneumatic), Cable
schedules, Cable drum schedules, Loop drawings, As-Built drawings, End of Job documentation.

Employment history
Amec Foster Wheeler
Lead C&I Engineer, SAMREF ESD Replacement Project, Yanbu, Saudi Arabia (Jul 2015 – Present)
The objective of the project is to address the obsolescence of the HINO relay system and to improve existing
Fired Heater Safety and Reliability. A total of 6000 I/O is affected by the refinery modifications.
My responsibility on the project is to lead the C&I team in the production of FEED C&I deliverables, interface
with the client to verify site interface requirements and liaise with management regarding engineering
discipline interface and reporting requirements.

C&I Engineer, RFE LNG Pre-FEED Project (Apr 2015 – Jun 2015)
My responsibility on the project was to prepare C&I project philosophies and specifications for the Russian
Far East LNG project located on the Sakhalin Island, De Kastri, Russia.
Chief Project & Chief Instrument Engineer, FT Wax (Governance role) (2011 – Mar 2015)
The objective of the project is to increase the wax production capacity in Sasol’s Sasolburg plant. This
required the installation of an additional Fisher-Tropsch (FT) synthesis unit (train A – Phase 1) with a second
FT synthesis (train B – Phase 2).
My responsibility on the project was in a governance role to review the quality of instrumentation and project
engineering deliverables and ensure uniformity across the variety of packages associated with the project. I
was responsible to specify engineering standards and verify quality engineered solutions compliant to
standards within the project schedule constraints. The overall phase 1 instrument loop count is 2100 while
phase 2 added an additional 1430 loops.
Chief Instrument Engineer, SUEP (Sasolburg Utilities Expansion) (Governance role) (2011 – 2014)
As part of the WAX project, facilities upstream and downstream of the new FT synthesis units also required
upgrades in order to cater for the additional wax production capacity. This was addressed in the SUEP
project (Sasolburg Utilities Expansion Project) This included upgrades to the gaseous utilities, Boiler feed
water; Firewater; Plant and Instrument air. The instrument loop count associated with this project is 250
loops.
Lead Instrument Engineer, C3 Stabilization – Secunda (2011 – 2014)
The intent of the C3 stabilisation project is to stabilise the C3 Value Chain at Secunda by de-linking the
extremely tight integration between the upstream Synthol reactors, propylene extraction units and the
downstream chemical plants with the appropriate buffer and storage facilities.
The instrument loop count associated with this project is 300 loops. My responsibility as lead C&I Engineer
was to lead the C&I scope from BDEP through to EPC and construction producing the C&I engineering and
design deliverables to ensure a functional and operable plant.
Lead Instrument Engineer, NG 149 Pressure Protection Station Upgrade. (2006 – 2011)
The upgrades at the pressure protection system were solely aimed at increasing its capacity by the
installation of additional fuel gas skid, gas heaters, gas filters and metering stations. Each of these
installations was a duplicate of the existing equipment in the form of a third process train.
Sasol together with Rompco operate a gas pipeline which transports natural gas from Mozambique to
Secunda and Sasolburg in South Africa. The project objective was to increase the capacity of the pipeline in
order to facilitate the future upgrade of the Sasol wax production facilities. The project was the detailed
design, engineering and construction of the gas compressor station in Komatipoort as well as the design,
engineering and construction of the upgrades to Sasol’s pressure protection station in Secunda.
My responsibility as lead C&I engineer on this 600 instrument loop project was to engineer and design the
project specific instrument deliverables to facilitate plant construction, operation and maintenance.
