Poorly designed cupolas used for metal melting in Indian foundries lead to high coke consumption and costs. TERI set up a demonstration Divided Blast Cupola (DBC) in 1998 to showcase a more efficient design. The DBC design provided by TERI reduced coke consumption by 35% compared to the previous design. TERI has since provided customized DBC designs and assistance to multiple foundries across India. This paper presents results from a DBC designed by TERI operating in a foundry in Rajkot, India. The new DBC design reduced coke consumption and silicon losses while increasing metal tapping temperatures and melting rates.
