India has great potential for tourism due to its rich culture, diversity of cuisines, and history. However, it has not reached its potential as a leading tourism country due to poor organization, an underdeveloped tourism infrastructure, and other political and economic challenges. While traveling within India is inexpensive, tourists often face problems like unreliable public transportation and being overcharged by taxi and auto drivers. Recent demonetization efforts have also temporarily disrupted the tourism industry with many travelers canceling planned trips due to cash limitations. Overall, tourism could significantly benefit India's economy if more was done to improve organization and address challenges holding the sector back.
