2. What is Tourism?
Tourism is travel for pleasure or business; also the
theory and practice of touring, the business of
attracting, accommodating, and entertaining
tourists, and the business of operating tours.
Tourism may be international, or within the
traveller's country.
3. Travel and tourism is the largest service industry in India. It
provides heritage, cultural, medical, business and sports
tourism. The main objective of this sector is to develop and
promote tourism, maintain competitiveness of India as tourist
destination and improve and expand existing tourism products to
ensure employment generation and economic growth. In this
section, the government provide information about various
tourist destinations, modes of travel, accommodation and
approved travel agents.

4. Some Tourist places in India
1) Agra, Uttar Pradesh
Home to one of the 7 wonders of the world, the Taj
Mahal, Agra is a sneak peek into the architectural
history with other structures such as Agra Fort
,Jama Mosque , Fatehpur Sikri , Sikandra and
many more marvels of Ancient India .
5. 2) Manali, Himachal Pradesh
A valley nestled in the mountains of the Indian
state of Himachal Pradesh near the northern
end of the Kullu Valley. This town also has a
multitude of options for tourists looking for
adventurous activities like trekking ,
paragliding, skiing, zorbing, white water
rafting etc. Besides adventurous activities,
Manali also has a lot of temples which all
tourists and devotees love to visit.
6. 3) Jammu and Kashmir
Often called the ‘heaven on earth’ Jammu and
Kashmir lies on the peaks of Himalayan
Ranges . With a new colour every season,
J&K has wide range of places to visit like
Leh-Ladakh, SriNagar, Sonmarg, Patnitop,
Vaishnodevi Temple, Gulmarg and so on.
Besides sight seeing, it offers various other
activities like boating, skiing , shopping, etc.

Formerly known as Uttaranchal, is a state in the
northern part of India. It has many Hindu
temples and pilgrimage centres. Uttarakhand is
known for its natural beauty of the Himalayas,
the Bhabhar and the Terai. Uttarakhand has
many tourist places such as Haridwar,
Dehradun, Rishikesh, the valley of flowers,
Nainital, the Corbett national park and many
lakes and rivers.

Rajasthan is located on the western side of the
country. The palaces of Jaipur and Ajmer-
Pushkar , the lakes of Udaipur, the desert forts
of Jodhpur, Taragarh Fort (Star Fort) in Ajmer,
Bikaner , Jaisalmer, Mount Abu , Jaipur,
Bharatpur bird Sanctuary, Ranthambore and
many more places comprise its tourist
destinations.
9. 6) Goa
Goa is a state in India within the coastal region
known as the Konkan in Western India. Goa is
visited by large numbers of international and
domestic tourists each year for its beaches, places
of worship and world heritage architecture. It has
rich flora and fauna, owing to its location on the
Western Ghats range, a biodiversity hotspot.

Maharashtra is a state in the western region of
India . Ruins, monuments, tombs, forts and
places of worship left by these rulers are dotted
around the state. They include the world
heritage sites of Ajanta caves, Ellora caves.
There are also numerous forts associated with
the life of Shivaji Maharaj. Cities like Mumbai,
Pune, Lonavla, Kolad, Alibag, Mahabaleshwar,
Panchgani, etc. are famous tourist attractions.

Karnataka is a state in the south western region of
India. Karnataka has been home to some of the
most powerful empires of ancient and medieval
India. By virtue of its varied geography and long
history, Karnataka hosts numerous spots of interest
for tourists. There is an array of ancient sculptured
temples, modern cities, scenic hill ranges,
unexplored forests and endless beaches. Some of
these tourist places include- Bandipur national
Park, Mysore, the ancient city of Hampi, Coorg,
Chikmagalur, Kudremukh, Augumbe, Pattadakal,
etc.

Kerala's culture and traditions, coupled with its
varied demographics, have made the state one of
the most popular tourist destinations in India.
Kerala's beaches, backwaters, lakes, mountain
ranges, waterfalls, ancient ports, palaces, religious
institutions and wildlife sanctuaries are major
attractions for both domestic and international
tourists. Kerala is known for its ecotourism
initiatives which include mountaineering, trekking
and bird-watching programmes in the Western
Ghats as the major activities. Some major tourist
attractions are - Kovalam, Varkala, Fort Kochi,
Cherai, Munnar, Wayanad, Wagamon, Periyar Tiger
Reserve, Alleppey, Kumarakom, etc.
13. 10) Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu lies in the southernmost part of the
Indian Peninsula. Historic buildings and religious
sites include Hindu temples of Tamil architecture,
hill stations, beach resorts, multi-religious
pilgrimage sites, and eight UNESCO World
Heritage Sites. Some of its major tourist
attractions are - Thanjavur, Mahabalipuram ,Ooty,
Chennai, Kodaikanal, Rameshwaram , Marina
Beach, Coonoor , Kanchipuram, Hogenakkal
Waterfalls , etc.
14. 11) West Bengal
West Bengal is located in Eastern India on the
Bay of Bengal. Some of India's most preferred
travel destinations like; the Darjeeling
Himalayan hill region in the northern extreme
of the state, the highest peak of the state
Sandakphu and the Sunderbans mangrove
forests in the extreme south are all present in
West Bengal. Some more of its tourist
attractions are – Kolkata, Haldia , Digha,
Kurseong, Kalimpong, Singalila National Park,
Shantiniketan, etc.
15. 12) Gujarat
It offers scenic beauty from the Great Rann of
Kutch to the hills of Saputara and is the sole
home of pure Asiatic lions in the world. It is also
the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar
Vallabhbhai Patel. Some of its major tourist
attraction are - Vadodara, Kutch, Surat,
Ahmedabad, Gir National Forest, Rajkot,
Sabarmati Ashram, Bhuj, Somnath, Junagadh,
Modhera, etc.
16. 13) Sikkim
The panoramic perfection of the snow-
capped Himalayas, the heady scent of
flower-bedecked meadows, the vibrant
culture and joyous festivals, the infinite
variety of its flora and fauna makes it a
holiday that is at once fascinating and
challenging. Some of its major tourist
attractions are – Gangtok, Kanchenjunga,
Samdruptse, various passes, various lakes
and water bodies, Tsomgo, Lachung, Pelling,
Buddhist Circuit, etc.
17. 14) Lakshadweep & Andaman and Nicobar Islands

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are a group of islands at the juncture of the
Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea. In Port Blair, the main places to visit are the
Cellular Jail, Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park, Andaman Water sports
complex, Wandoor Beach, Ross Island and Viper Island. Other places include
Havelock island ,Neil Island , Cinque island, Saddle peak, Mt Harriet and Mud
Volcano.
Lakshadweep Islands are located in the Laccadive Sea. Due to its isolation and
scenic appeal, Lakshadweep is a great tourist attraction. Water sports activities
such as scuba diving, wind surfing, snorkelling, surfing, yachting and night-
voyages into the sea are quite popular activities among tourists. Some of its tourist
attractions are – Kavaratti, Bangaram, Minicoy, Kadmat island, Agatti
18. Importance of Tourism in India
The tourism industry of India is
economically important and grows
rapidly. The World Travel & Tourism
Council calculated that tourism
generated INR6.4 trillion or 6.6% of
the nation’s GDP in 2012. It
supported 39.5 million jobs, 7.7% of
its total employment. The sector is
predicted to grow at an average
annual rate of 7.9% from 2013 to
2023. This gives India the third rank
among countries with the fastest
growing tourism industries over the
next decade.• Tourism in India has emerged as an instrument of income and employment
generation, poverty alleviation and sustainable human development.
• Tourism is an important source of foreign exchange earnings in India.
• Tourism helps preserve several places which are of historical importance by
declaring them as heritage sites.
19. Problems of Tourism industry in India
Some of the major road blocks or hurdles for the proper development of the
industry are:
• Lack of proper infrastructure which includes non availability of good
roads and poor connectivity to the tourist destinations.
• Lack of aggressive online and other marketing strategies to promote India
as a must-visit location
• Too many points of differentiation available but not cashed upon (such as
rare animal sanctuaries, religious pilgrimage tours and extreme Himalaya
tours)• Lack of funds due to
which a long list of
heritage monuments
that are still sitting in
squalid environments
etc.
20. Initiatives taken by Indian Government to promote Tourism
In 2002, the government of India announced a new Tourism policy. The
Policy is built around the 7-S Mantra –

• SURAKSHAA (Safety)
• SAHYOG (Cooperation)
• SANRACHNAA (Infrastructure)
