Influence how others see you
• Interpersonal skills are the life skills we use every day to communicate and interact with other
people, both individually and in groups.
• Interpersonal skills are not just important in the workplace, our personal and social lives can also
benefit from better interpersonal skills.
• To work in groups
• To socialize at the work place
• To present yourself at work
• To listen and to question
• To give and receive feedback
• To build and maintain relationships.
Why do we need interpersonal
skills?
• Communication Skills
• Listening Skills
• Personal Appearance
Some Core Interpersonal Skills
Activity
7 Core components of the psychology of teamwork
TESI (Team Emotional and Social Intelligence) Model
7 skills that will contribute to effective team functioning:
1. Team Identity
Refers to how well the team demonstrates belongingness, a desire to work
together, and a sense of clarity around the role of each member. Brings with
it a high level of loyalty if highly scored.
2. Motivation
Considers the energy levels of
and responsibility within the
team, and whether competition
is working for or against the
team. ?Requires knowing and
meeting desires, setting stretch
goals, reinforcing success, and
being persistent.
3. Emotional Awareness
• Considers the amount of
attention the team pays to
noticing, understanding, and
respecting feelings of team
members. Is a critical factor in
motivation, productivity, and a
team’s ability to collaborate. So
it’s central to the success of
every team.
4. Communication
Intuitively we all know that communication is an essential factor for a group
of people working together. It provides feedback and guidance on how well
each of the team members listens, encourages participation and discusses
sensitive topics.
5. Stress Tolerance
Gives the team a reflection of how
well it’s doing in managing the
pressures of workload, time
constraints, and the real needs for
work- life balance. It’s the closest
of all scales to physical health.
6. Conflict Resolution
• Addresses how constructively the team conducts the process of
disagreement and whether the team is able to deal with adversity to
enhance its functioning, rather than being caught up in the conflict. It’s
essential for productivity and creativity
7. Positive Mood
Highlights the level of encouragement, sense of humor and how successful
the team expects to be. Is a major support for a team’s flexibility and
resilience. The heart of a “can-do” attitude. Influences building an energized
attitude in your teams.
In the words of Henry Ford:
“Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working
together is success.”

Have you ever had someone say you
were good at something, but you did not
feel that about yourself?

Learning
Objective
I can apply the Johari Window
conceptto discuss how one can
interpret their own
identity.
Johari Window
• The Johari Window model is a simple and useful tool for
illustrating and improving self-awareness, and mutual
understanding between individuals within a group.
• The Johari Window model can also be used to assess and
improve a group's relationship with other groups.
Founders
• The Johari Window model was devised by American
psychologists Joseph Luft and Harry Ingham in 1955, while
researching group dynamics at the University of California
LosAngeles.
• The model was first published in the Proceedings of the
Western Training Laboratory in Group Development by UCLA
Extension Office in 1955, and was later expanded by Joseph
Luft.
Formation of Name
• Luft and Ingham called their Johari Window model 'Johari'
after combining their first names, Joe and Harry. In early
publications the word appears as 'JoHari'.
Influence
• Today the Johari Window model is especially relevant
dueto modern emphasis on, and influence of
• soft skills
• behaviour
• empathy
• cooperation
• inter-group development
• interpersonal development.
Use of Johari Model
• The Johari Window soon became a widely used model for
understanding and training self-awareness, personal
development, improving communications, interpersonal
relationships, group dynamics, team development and inter-
group relationships.
What actually Model Represents
• The Johari Window model is also referred to as a 'disclosure/feedback model of
self awareness', and by some people an 'information processing tool'.
• The Johari Window actually represents information - feelings, experience, views,
attitudes, skills, intentions, motivation, etc - within or about a person - in relation to
their group, from four perspectives.
Known by you Unknown by you
Known
by others Your known and open you. Your blind spot.
Unknown
by others Your hidden you.
Unknown
for you and others.
Arena
•The information that you
know
about yourself and that
others also know.
• The obvious things, e.g.
race, name, height,
weight, etc.
• Things you tell others
when you introduce
yourself.
•All the info. you want others
to
know
Arena
Things I know
about myself
Things others know
about me
Things others don’t
know about me
Things I don’t know
about myself
Hidden Arena
• Contains all that
information that we don’t
want others to
know about us
• Closet of feelings,
insecurities, and not-so-
great experiences.
• The private
information
Arena
Hidden Arena
Things I know

Things others don’t

Blind Spot
•Information that others
know about you, but you
don’t know
about yourself.
• Examples:
“You’re a good
listener!” “You
snore.”
You are really charismatic
about things!”
We may feel that we are not a good
listener or talker, but our friends
may feel differently.

What’s the POINT?
Information can move from one pane to the next as you
develop mutual trust, share hopes and dreams, and find
similarities and things in common with others.
We get over our differences and start to trust each other as
classmatesand teammates.
How TRUSThelps us GROW
Trust in each other = telling more and more
information about ourselves.
This expands the arena.
Activity
-Create your Johari Window
-Independently: Fill in your Arena
and Hidden Arena
With a PARTNER:
Fill out the Blind SPOT
worksheet
Write what you seen in the other
person:
• Traits
• Habits they do
• verbal/non verbal ways they
communicate
Johari quadrant 1
• Johari region 1 is also known as the 'area of free
activity'. This is the information about the person -
behaviour, attitude, feelings, emotion, knowledge,
experience, skills, views, etc - known by the person ('the
self') and known by the group ('others').
Johari quadrant 2
• Johari region 2 is what is known about a person by others in
the group, but is unknown by the person him/herself.
Johari quadrant 3
•what is known to ourselves but kept hidden from, and
therefore unknown to others.
Johari quadrant 4
• It contains information, feelings, talent
abilities, aptitudes, experiences etc, that are unknown to the
person him/herself and unknown to others in the group.
Johari Window Exercise
The subject is given a list of 55 adjectives and picks five or six that they feel describe
their own personality.
Peers of the subject are then given the same list, and each pick five or six
adjectives that describe the subject.

•a natural ability or aptitude that a person doesn't realise they
possess
• a fear or aversion that a person does not know they have
• an unknown illness
• repressed or subconscious feelings
• conditioned behaviour or attitudes from childhood
Drawbacks of Johari window
• Some thing are perhaps better not to Communicated (like
mental or health problem)
• Some people may pass on the information they received
further then we desire.
• Some people may react negatively.
• Using johari window is useless exercise if it is not linked to
the activities that reinforce positive behavior or that correct
negative behavior.
• Some cultures have a very open and accepting approach to
feedback and others do not.
• Some people take personal feedback offensively.

  • 26. VOCAB Word of the DAY Accentuate The bold and dramatic eye make up really accentuates the model’s eyes. Actual Meaning: It’s a verb! To emphasize or to highlight.
  • 27. Learning Objective I can apply the Johari Window conceptto discuss how one can interpret their own identity.
  • 28. Johari Window • The Johari Window model is a simple and useful tool for illustrating and improving self-awareness, and mutual understanding between individuals within a group. • The Johari Window model can also be used to assess and improve a group's relationship with other groups.
  • 29. Founders • The Johari Window model was devised by American psychologists Joseph Luft and Harry Ingham in 1955, while researching group dynamics at the University of California LosAngeles. • The model was first published in the Proceedings of the Western Training Laboratory in Group Development by UCLA Extension Office in 1955, and was later expanded by Joseph Luft.
  • 30. Formation of Name • Luft and Ingham called their Johari Window model 'Johari' after combining their first names, Joe and Harry. In early publications the word appears as 'JoHari'.
  • 31. Influence • Today the Johari Window model is especially relevant dueto modern emphasis on, and influence of • soft skills • behaviour • empathy • cooperation • inter-group development • interpersonal development.
  • 32. Use of Johari Model • The Johari Window soon became a widely used model for understanding and training self-awareness, personal development, improving communications, interpersonal relationships, group dynamics, team development and inter- group relationships.
  • 33. What actually Model Represents • The Johari Window model is also referred to as a 'disclosure/feedback model of self awareness', and by some people an 'information processing tool'. • The Johari Window actually represents information - feelings, experience, views, attitudes, skills, intentions, motivation, etc - within or about a person - in relation to their group, from four perspectives.
  • 34. Known by you Unknown by you Known by others Your known and open you. Your blind spot. Unknown by others Your hidden you. Unknown for you and others.
  • 35. Arena •The information that you know about yourself and that others also know. • The obvious things, e.g. race, name, height, weight, etc. • Things you tell others when you introduce yourself. •All the info. you want others to know Arena Things I know about myself Things others know about me Things others don’t know about me Things I don’t know about myself
  • 36. Hidden Arena • Contains all that information that we don’t want others to know about us • Closet of feelings, insecurities, and not-so- great experiences. • The private information Arena Hidden Arena Things I know about myself Things others know about me Things others don’t know about me Things I don’t know about myself
  • 37. Blind Spot •Information that others know about you, but you don’t know about yourself. • Examples: “You’re a good listener!” “You snore.” You are really charismatic about things!” We may feel that we are not a good listener or talker, but our friends may feel differently. Arena Blind Spot Hidden Arena Things I know about myself Things others know about me Things others don’t know about me Things I don’t know about myself
  • 38. Unknown Arena •Information that you don’t know and others don’t know. •Could be abilities and potentials that you have not discovered about yourself yet Example:You could be an amazing Public Arena Blind Spot Hidden Arena Unknown Arena Things I know about myself Things others know about me Things others don’t know about me Relations Rep, or Guidance Counselor but you just wouldn’t know that yet. Things I don’t know about myself
  • 39. What’s the POINT? Information can move from one pane to the next as you develop mutual trust, share hopes and dreams, and find similarities and things in common with others. We get over our differences and start to trust each other as classmatesand teammates.
  • 40.
  • 41. How TRUSThelps us GROW Trust in each other = telling more and more information about ourselves. This expands the arena.
  • 42. Activity -Create your Johari Window -Independently: Fill in your Arena and Hidden Arena With a PARTNER: Fill out the Blind SPOT worksheet Write what you seen in the other person: • Traits • Habits they do • verbal/non verbal ways they communicate

  • 44. Johari quadrant 2 • Johari region 2 is what is known about a person by others in the group, but is unknown by the person him/herself.

Editor's Notes

  1. Empathy, and more to the point Empathic Communication, is a two pronged process. The first is an internalization of the other person's perceptions and an translating of it, where in the empathizer attempts to imaginatively perceive the details of an experience, how the other person interprets it, and the emotions associated with it. And this is done, hopefully, without losing their own personal perspective in the process. The second part of this is an external process where in the empathizer, after assessing all of the things that were broken down in the internalization process, decides on the best approach to take with the person they are empathizing with. In other words, the empathizer decides on the best way to more closely relate with the other person in order to help them and/or offer them support.
