What I Have Learned of Leadership
It is hard to quantify what I have learned in the semester of Leadership because the courses focus
was not about memorizing data, but rather learning about having the will to lead and finding the
courage to make it happen. A majority of the information I learned from this course came from
learning about myself. Through readings, course activities, and various projects, I learned what
makes a great leader, but more importantly what traits I possess that will make me a great leader. In
order to be a great leader, one must have an understanding of what leadership is. Leadership is a
social influence (Stogdill, p. 25). It means leaving a mark. It is initiating and guiding, and the result
is change. Leading is the result of your passion coming to life.
The readings for the course complimented the activities that were done in class. Many of the
overarching themes of the course pertained to finding your own passion in life. You can only be a
great leader if you are passionate about the cause that you are leading. The Harvard Business Press
published an article by Stewart D. Friedman labeled, Total Leadership: Be a Better Leader, Have a
Richer Life. The article's aim is to clarify what is important in one's life. One of the ways in which
this is accomplished is by describing your hero or someone you admire (Friedman, p. 478). For my
Will to Lead paper I discussed how my grandfather was my hero and somebody that I greatly
respect. I have always loved learning, but never thought

Reflection Paper On Listening Styles
It is important to understand my listening approaches since they are vital for effective
communication. Having effective listening skills are critical in enhancing a communication process
that is productive both within and outside an organization. A personal listening profile is essential
since it may enable one to emerge as an active and purposeful listener within a wide variety of
instances resulting in a productive or efficient communication (Watson & Barker, 1995). This
reflective paper is concerned with my listening style profile where I have summed the scores from
the survey and demonstrating my most preferred listening style.
The study presented the following scores: the sum for people–oriented listening style was 14, an
action–oriented listening style was 7, a content–oriented listening style was 12, and the sum for
time–oriented listening style was 11. From this score, I demonstrated the highest score in the
people–oriented listening style which points out that I am very emphatic and much concerned with
other people's emotions, and this is my preferred listening style. I do listen without judging others,
and at some point, during communication; I support the speaker as well as learning from other
people's experiences. This type of listening style may help me to enhance relationships; however, it
might interfere with efficient judgment or decision since I tend to trust others to a great extent
(Watson & Barker, 1995). Besides, the people–oriented listening

Reflection On Learning Habits And Academic Success
Learning habits are skills taught or based off of an individual's personal experiences. There are
several different forms of learning habits, for example, working in a safe environment, collaborating
with others, independently working, being reliable, organized, showcasing initiative, having the
ability to possess self–advocacy and to have the flexibility to provide customer service. In this
reflection paper, I will address ways these learning habits or skills aid in supporting my academic
success. Also, displaying the learning habits I already possess as an individual and capsizing on
those skills or patterns I have yet to develop. In summarizing my reflection, I will establish a plan I
have for promoting and supporting the learning habits I need to created still. Let's explore some of
these options that were associated with learning habits and skills.
As stated above learning habits consist of several different formalities; however, as a college student
these habits should contain being flexible to work with others, working in a healthy safe setting,
possessing the ability to work and student independently, being reliable, having a sense of
organizational system, taking the initiative for my actions, asking the appropriate questions to seek
clarification when discussing topics, and being able to efficiently listen to determine if I have
successfully comprehended the topic of discussion. Each of these factors will assist with my thriving
as a successful student. For example, taking the initiative will permit an individual to establish more
leadership roles, which as a nurse I do not mind helping anyone who needs help, which consists of
being open–minded and flexible. Other incentives associated with these learning habits and student
require the student to be disciplined and proactive in their learning experiences. I have learned that
having discipline is to key to being a successful college student.
Some of the learning habits and skills that I already possess are listed as follows; I tend to seek
clarity to comprehend, which entails me analyzing and accessing the situation. These traits tend to
make me efficient as a nurse with displaying empathy to others while actively listening to their
concerns. At

Interviewing
Our group interviewed Simon Smuts–Kennedy, who is the owner of New Zealand hat
manufacturing business, Hills Hats.
How did your group in general act during the interview?
The group generally felt that our face–to–face interviewing was both effective and efficient, due in
large part to our positive body language, detailed research and preparation that enabled us to elicit
the information we sought and respond to answers with further follow–up questions as appropriate.
Our interview commenced with introductions, some brief small talk and a reminder about the
purpose of the interview and likely duration. This relaxed start seemed to settle everyone's nerves
and create a positive atmosphere to foster compelling conversation rather than an inquisition.
Fortunately, our interviewee was not shy or nervous. We were careful not to spend too much time
talking ourselves, but rather focused on the interviewee's responses, recognising the need to
concentrate, not interrupt (needlessly), ask questions (to discover, confirm or clarify), and continue
to support the speaker throughout with positive body language and no abrasive or confrontational
questioning.
How did you in particular act during the interview?
Personally, I thought the interview went well and that my behaviour was appropriate – positive body
language, showed respect for the interviewee and their responses, avoided distracting comments and
mannerisms, listened carefully to answers, and did not interrupt.

The Importance Of Teacher And Student Interaction In...
Teacher and student interaction could also help students achieve high academic performance. Lev
Vygotsky, a Russian psychologist, talked about a person with higher knowledge having a greater
influence on our learning. When people who are older and more knowledgeable guide us through a
learning process it is easier for us to grasp a better understanding of those concepts and information.
Students can ask teachers questions and teachers can answer those questions in ways that will help
the student understand the material they are learning. Teachers can practice a method known as
high–quality instruction to ensure that all students are understanding the material being taught.
According to the IRIS Center Peabody College in Vanderbilt University, "High–quality instruction
refers to the utilization of both research–validated instructional practices and core reading programs.
Implementing high–quality instruction allows teachers to rule out inadequate instruction as a reason
for poor reading performance" (2). The IRIS Center explains this concept in detail, providing further
ways to implement high–quality instruction in the classroom. They discuss two ways to implement
it. One way is through a practice called "differentiated instruction." This is where the teacher uses
students' assessment data and alters instruction to maximize all students' learning (The IRIS Center
2). This way, every student is able to benefit from what is being taught. It also allows teachers to

The Importance Of Reflection
Reflection is where you inspect and analyse, your own thoughts and feelings. It allows you to gain a
greater sense of understanding about yourself and the impact you have on the world (Fisher, Chew
and Leow, 2015). It enables you to identify your strengths and weaknesses, allowing you to know
which areas need support. Reflection is a fundamental part of being a counsellor, coach or mentor,
as it plays a role in ensuring professional practise and the development of therapeutic relationships
(Fisher, Chew and Leow, 2015). It also demonstrates your commitment to your clients and your
career, as it shows you want to improve and develop. A useful way of reflecting is to use models of
reflection to provide structure. Gibbs' reflective cycle (Gibbs, 1988) is an effective model to use as it
ensures all features of a particular situation have been studied and analysed, which will improve
understanding of the situation if it occurs again in the future. It does this through six distinct steps.
The first stage of Gibbs model is the description of the events that are being reflected on.
Throughout the course, we took skills learnt about in lecture, and attempted to apply these during
the practicals. We spent time learning about counselling, coaching and mentoring as a whole, as well
as therapeutic relationships, theories and tools that are appropriate. Each practical had tasks to help
us engage the learned techniques and we often worked in pairs. Usually we would come up with
hypothetical situations and use the framework given to us by the lecturers to get more detail from
our 'client'. We spent a lot of time practising our active listening skills, using a range of different
tasks, such as standing back to back trying to talk, or getting our 'client' to talk about their plans for
the future. Additionally, we used a range of tools, such as The Skilled Helper Model (Egan, 2014)
Beck's Cognitive Conceptualisation Model (Beck, 2011) and the GROW Model (Whitmore, 2015).
We even had a session where we looked at how people often share the same fears about therapy,
especially group therapy. Overall, we spent lots of time learning skills, and then attempting to
practise them.
The second stage of Gibbs model focuses on the emotions

Listening Skills In PTE
How to improve Listening skills in PTE
Effective listening is important because it prevents miscommunication and makes a message clearly
understood. Listening is a skill which is required for all types of communication. The process of
listening involves five stages– receiving, understanding, evaluating, remembering and responding.
An effective listener hear the speech sounds directed towards him, understand the message, critically
evaluate the message, remember what is said and respond. Good listening skills help you understand
what is being asked, build rapport with the speaker, work in a team–based environment, resolve
problems and uncover the meaning of what others are saying.
Listening section is one of the crucial sections of the PTE test. It assesses the ability of the test taker
how well he/she can respond clearly after listening to a set of instructions. The listening ... Show

It is encouraging for the listener to look at the speaker. It will leave you with no choice but to pay
attention to the speaker.
Nod head: – Nodding head, when you are listening is an indication that you are taking in the
information which is being conveyed by the speaker. It also shows that you understand the speaker's
feelings. You can show your understanding just by nodding the head or through appropriate facial
expressions.
Ask questions: – Asking appropriate questions is another indication that you were attentive
throughout the process. Once the speaker has finished talking, you can ask questions or repeat his or
her instructions to confirm that you understand them.
Listening is not something that just happens, but it is an active process, in which conscious decision
is made to listen and understand what is being said. When you do not understand something, you
can ask the speaker to explain it to you. But rather than interrupting the speaker, you should wait
until the speaker

A Career As A Counselor
Being a counselor is nothing new as it has been part of my management toolbox for since the it was
added only a few years after joining the Navy whether it was for career, personal or professional
reasons but the seeds for helping others were planted long before. Being the oldest child was a factor
that heavily influenced my drive to help others as I was inclined to help out my mother, who was
divorced, with my younger brother and sister. Even after my mother remarried, I always found
myself being my brothers' keeper. I would often help out or even do his chores so that when our
step–father would come home from being on the road (as he was a truck driver) all those tasks that
were assigned before he left were done and thereby keeping him ... Show more content on

solidified my experience in which I reflect back upon. While I do pride myself in my ability to
communicate as well as listen, this course has helped me refocus my attention to not be so ready to
interject my ideas or suggestions as a counselor. Our class discussions on active listening have
helped dust off the shelves and cobwebs that have collected, to refocus attention on skills that I have

We 're More Alike Than Different Essay
We're More Alike Than Different
Taylor Roberts
"Compromise, communication and consistency are needed in all relationships not just romantic
ones." (Elle). When communicating we always find a way to make connections with one another
and communicating with individuals that have special needs can be overwhelming and exciting at
the same time. Most people wouldn't believe how easy it is to communicate with them and all it
takes is a little patience, time, and consideration. In my paper I will talk about how important it is in
how we communicate with them and how connecting with them will influence them and us as
individuals.
The topic I have chosen to talk about is communications between individuals that have special needs
and those that don't because people with special needs mean a lot to me. As a high school student I
am involved in many things but my favorite is Peer Tutoring. Peer Tutoring gives me the
opportunity to help others and volunteer places like the Buddy Walk and Special Olympics. This
topic gives me the chance to make others aware of the proper and respectful way to communicate
with people that have special needs. As I graduate this year I plan to go to college and become a
Special Education Teacher where I will be working a lot with special needs or disabled students and
being able to communicate with them is the biggest part of the job.
It's all about how much effort your willing to put into it and no matter who you are communicating
with you always have

The Lottery, By Shirley Jackson And An Adaptation Of ``...
"The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson and an adaptation of "The Metamorphosis" by Peter Kuper are
valuable short stories that are worth a close evaluation of. A comparison and contrast of the theme
alienation in both stories would lead to a more thorough understanding of the messages behind the
texts. The purpose of this essay is to answer the question on "what insights do we gain into the
course theme of alienation when we read both "The Lottery" and "The Metamorphosis" side by
side?" Gregor Samsa in "The Metamorphosis" by Peter Kuper and the townspeople in "The Lottery"
by Shirley Jackson are similar in that they both reveal a passive approach to alienation that
ultimately leads to the growing of alienation; the alienation is different for Gregor and the
townspeople in terms of how active they participate within their community determine their
likelihood of being marginalized. Gregor's minimal expression of his feelings towards his family
alienates and marginalizes Gregor from his family. The townspeople's active participation in the
lottery, however, contributes to the severity of alienation within the town. These two stories attempt
to tell us that alienation and the failure to take initiative to resist oppression are interconnected. This
essay will compare Gregor Samsa and the townspeople's passivity and also explore how taking on
an active and inactive role in their story's context would foster different types of alienation. In "The
Metamorphosis" by Peter Kuper, Gregor

A Magneto Rheological Shock Absorber
A magneto rheological shock absorber or magneto rheological damper is a damper filled with
magneto rheological fluid, which is controlled by magnetic field, usually using an electromagnet.
This allows the damping characteristics of the shock absorber to be continuously controlled by
varying the current in the electromagnet. This type of shock absorber has found applications in
semi–active vehicle suspensions which may adapt to road conditions, as they are driven by
continuous sensor monitoring and also with prosthetic limbs. Fig. No.1. Magneto Rheological
damper
Above figure shows the schematic of magneto rheological damper which is consist of cylinder,
piston, piston rod and electrical winding. There are three types of the magneto rheological damper
are,
Mono tube MR damper
Twin tube MR damper
Double–ended MR damper
MONO TUBE MR DAMPER
From the three types, the mono tube is the most common since it can be installed in any direction
and it is small in size. A mono tube MR damper, shown in Figure, has only one store for the MR
fluid and it is associated with accumulator mechanism to accommodate the changes in volume that
results from piston rod movement. The accumulator piston is used for providing a barrier between
the MR fluid and a compressed gas (usually nitrogen) that is used for accommodating the volume
changes of liquid that occur when the piston rod enters the housing. Fig. No.2.Mono tube MR

possess in order to communicate effectively with clients (Hough, 1998). This reflective essay clearly
articulates my application of counselling skills used in this practice session and suggestions for
improvement. It will provide a summary of the session, identification of a range of skills used and a

A good way to let a client know you are listening is by the use of minimal responses including
expressions and non verbal responses that occur in our everyday conversations (Geldard &
Geldard, 2001). For example at the beginning of the session my client said "..., Sometimes I feel I
choose my job or something else in my life over my uni..." I replied by nodding and made use of the
expression "Mm–hmm". I demonstrated this skill to allow the client to speak without interruptions
and to verbally express my interest in her issue. Another skill I used within this session is a
technique also known as paraphrasing. Paraphrasing refers to stating in one's own words what they
think the client means helping to ensure their understanding and interest in the client (DeVito,
2010). I felt that I demonstrated this when the client said "As the term progresses I get lazier, but at
the beginning of the semester I am productive, and it feels rewarding when I do, do well and I feel
better about myself and everyone is proud of me as well when I get the results and stuff, but there's
this thing that comes into my mind that said I can't do this and maybe I start rethinking about staying
in uni and I start considering dropping it, so I can have more free time." I reply by saying "Ok so

The And Caring For The Clinical Setting : Patients '...
According to the article, "Noncaring and Caring in the Clinical Setting: Patients' Descriptions",
"Presence is something which reveals itself immediately and unmistakably in a look, a smile, an
intonation, or a handshake" (Riemen). The concept of nursing presence may sound similar to the
nurse simply caring for the patient. However, nursing presence is much more complex; then simply
administering the patient's insulin before every meal. A nurse being present with the patient is
actively advocating for the patient. They're working with the patient to ensure they're receiving the
best care. If the patient needs pain medication, but doesn't have any ordered, the nurse is calling the

In other words, transformative healing deals with therapeutic communication, assisting the patient
with decreasing anxiety and stress; requires the therapeutic guidance, therefore, assists in the patient
with their healing process. Without being present the nurse would be unable to therapeutically
communicate/guide the patient. Therefore, nursing presence and therapeutic communication; go
hand and hand. Caring for a patient is defined as, "in a generic sense as those assistive, supportive,
or facilitative acts toward or for another individual or group with evident or anticipate needs to
ameliorate or improve a human condition of lifeway" (Riemen 135). This definition does not imply
anything about the nurse going above and beyond to care for this patient; the definition talks about
assisting the patient. Not listening and acknowledging the patient's concerns and preferences about
their care. In simply, caring for a patient the nurse, may come into the room and complete the
laundry list of task they have to complete, and if they have time will "care–for" and "listen" to the
patient. However, if the nurse is overwhelmed by the stressors of being a nurse, they may not be
fully engaged in the conversation with the patient. This nurse isn't actively

How Media Has Changed My Own Style And Culture
Media has left an indelible mark on the lives of many generations before me, which is something I
already knew. I've seen black–and–white clips of CBS anchorman Walter Cronkite as he
heartbreakingly informed America on the assassinations of prominent figures like John F. Kennedy
and Martin Luther King, Jr., as well as breaking the Watergate scandal. I've seen syndicated Sanford
and Son reruns, and I've listened to music from 70s and 80s artists like Blondie, The Mamas and Jim
Croce. However, despite all of that, there is a difference that I've found from looking back on the
media of the past, and actually hearing about how the media of a specific time period influenced

Q: Did media help to define your generation by giving you any fashion trends?
A: In 1979, women's overalls were pretty popular. They were curvy and accentuated the waist. Also,
women's pantsuits were really in style around that time. The Jheri curl was big back then, but I never

Q: What programs on television did you like to watch?
A: I liked Three's Company, The Waltons, 60 Minutes, and Good Times. The Jeffersons was on
during that time, the whole family used to watch that whenever it showed. Sanford & Son was
another show that we all would watch. It still makes me laugh even though I've seen every episode
more than once.
Q: Did you ever want a job in media? Why?
A: Yes, actually. One of my dream jobs was to work in the newsroom as a reporter. I had always
been fascinated with television news and reporting. Growing up, we saw newscasters like Walter
Cronkite deliver the news to the whole country. It always seemed interesting working in a field
where you give information that is sometimes powerful to a group of people, to keep them informed.

The Benefits Of Active Listening For A Counselling
Active Listening – listening to the words being said, the tone in which they are said and paying
acute attention to the non–verbal communication. This has many benefits it supports the client to
feel understood, valued and accepted. This in turn will support the client to feel empowered. Active
listening supports the counsellor to understand what is being said and to identify the clients'
thoughts and feelings. Active listening is a skill that needs to be practiced and developed. Barriers to
the process could include the environment for example external noise and interruptions may cause
distractions. The counsellor overthinking about how to respond to what is being said rather than
actively listening, it takes practice to develop the ability to refrain from doing this. Or the counsellor
may pre–empt, move ahead in their own mind as to the direction in which the client is taking the
conversation blocking the ability to be open. The counsellor needs to be mindful or not allowing
their own past experiences to cloud their thoughts and feelings towards the subject which may
inhibit the ability to actively listen to the client. Reflection –this strategy involves the counsellor
verbally reflecting back their understanding of what has been said and the feelings that have been
displayed. This is a useful strategy as it supports the client to feel heard by identifying and
validating the clients feelings it gives them the courage to discuss these and explore them in further
detail.

Personal Narrative : A Traumatic Experience

went through, my relationship and how it affects me, and how my new–found independence effects
both events. The session in total took sixteen minutes, but for most of the time I discussed about the
traumatic car wreck that I was in three years ago where the passenger died. When talking about this
traumatic experience I mentioned that he was one of my good friends and how if he would have
lived he would have come to Lubbock Christian University. Also, I conversed that being away from
my support group and home town had made coping more difficult. On the other hand we talked
about how being alone has helped me become more independent and how I got my boyfriend from
my independency. I was able to talk to Mikeala about my boyfriend, my independency, and the
wreck. Mikeala performed as the counselor very well with good form and by essentially practicing
active listening. The counselor was empathetic and later said that my crying helped her become
more empathetic. The crying helped because it was easier to mirror my emotions because she is a
sympathy crier. She also commented later that when I was discussing the car wreck she found it
difficult to not talk about her own car wreck experience and how she understands the stress of the
situation. She also did a good job mirroring my body language as well as my emotions. The only
mistakes I noticed was that , during the session,

Being An Effective Practitioner
An important factor when note–taking is the ability to be an effective listener. Being an effective
listener takes a lot more doing than simply sitting in front of a professor, and hoping everything he
or she will say sink in to your memory. Being an effective listener requires you to concentrate
primarily on the material rather than on the speaker. When you force yourself to concentrate on the
material at hand, you are teaching yourself the method of being an active listener. This method
allows you absorb the material better, because you're completey engaged in the lecture. By doing so,
you are also demonstrating to your professors and teaching assistants that you are effectively
listening to the material being taught. When students tend to pay more attention to the lecturer than
the material, that is when their mind begins to run. Judgement and passive learning all begin to
develop, as a result of paying more attention to the lecturer, than focusing on the material provided
to learn. To effectively take notes during lectures, online courses, or even from voice recordings it is
always helpful to take notes in short form. Although, there is one exception during note taking. If

After twenty–eight years working for CBS, Bernard Goldberg decided that he no longer wanted to
work for a news station he didn't admire. Thus, he resigned and began work on his book Bias; a
book in which he merely draws attention to the media for reporting from a leftist perspective,

Goldberg does a great job of integrating all perspectives and sides when writing his book. As well,
he has surely done his share of research. He cites numerous newspaper and magazine articles, as
well as quote upon quote upon quote from CBS insiders and fellow reporters. He refers to the
constant refusal to have a single left–winger be labeled as "liberal" anywhere in the news, while
always labeling those on the right as "conservative." He laughs at how the news has introduced
Catherine MacKinnon (who once implied that all sexual intercourse was rape) as a "noted law
professor" while Phyllis Schlafly is a "conservative spokeswoman" (CBS This Morning, 1981). By
the same token, the Wall Street Journal's editorial page is conservative, but the equivalent editorial
page in the New York Times is simply "middle of the road," as the Dan (CBS's nickname for Dan
Rather) so elequently puts it.
But the fascinating reason why this book is so compelling is not just what is being said, but by
whose mouth it is spewing from. A former CBS news correspondent for nearly three decades,
Goldberg is surely not conservative. His motive is not to gain conservatives' approval. In fact, his
own political views, being that he's pro–choice, pro–gay marriage, and he has never voted for
Ronald Reagan (a fact he mentions quite frequently), make

Communication Filters
Do you struggle holding a conversation with others? For some, talking with others can be their

challenging if you don't know the person you are approaching. Knowing the skills to hold a
conversation with a stranger is one of the biggest keys in business. If you can get them to trust you,
they will trust to buy from you. The first key while communicating is using "communication filters".
Communication filters control how we speak and act while around a person(s). The first filter is the
emotional side of speaking. While we can't necessarily eliminate all emotion from talking, I can talk

Yes it's good to know when to talk to keep the conversation going or when to make a pitch but it's
just as important to know when to shut up and listen to what the other person has to say. It's
amazing, as Mr. Nieland stated, how much can be learned if one just keeps talking to a minimal.
There are different types of listening, and knowing when to use each one is very helpful to figuring
out many things about a potential client. The first, active listening, is just like it sounds. Actively
listening to what a person has to say. This involves listening with all your senses. While you may be
actively listening in your head, you also need to appear as you are interested. There are two different
ways to show that one is actively listening. The first, being the non–verbal messages that we
covered earlier. So this can mean simply, making eye contact, nodding your head, giving a verbal
acknowledgement telling them to continue. These all are ways to show that we are actively listening.
The second, verbally. Remembering things about the person and key points in what they were
talking about makes them feel more at ease. Questioning things within the story will lead to more
conversation and gets you to learn more about the topic or person. Summarizing at the end what
they have covered and what you have learned is great because it shows that you were actively
listening for the entire presentation (skillsyouneed.com). Critical listening is the next step in

An object is uniquely identified by its name and has a set of attributes–the characteristics and
information that the object represents– defined by a schema, which also determines the kinds of
objects that can be stored in Active Directory. The Active Directory framework that holds the
objects can be viewed at a number of levels. The forest, tree, and domain are the logical divisions in
an Active Directory network. Within a deployment, objects are grouped into domains. The objects
for a single domain are stored in a single database (which can be replicated). Domains are identified
by their DNS name structure, the namespace. A domain is defined as a logical group of network
objects (computers, users, devices) that share the same active directory database. A tree is a

Conflict Reflection Paper
Shortly after my outburst, the two of them began to have dialogue. My mom stated that she was
sorry for making a brash comment involving an offensive comment regarding anorexia. Kameron
told Mom that he knew he was wrong for pointing out an insecurity of her eating habits in
accordance with her negative body image. They both sought understanding from each other's
perspectives. Kameron and Mom consoled me and told me they felt horrible for putting me in the
middle of their conflict. At the end of the conversation, we told each other what we needed from
each other in our relationships and that we loved one another. The conflict was resolved and we
walked away with empathy in our hearts.
I decided to analyze this specific instance of conflict because it involves differing values and
conflict styles. These factors contributed to positive and adverse effects. There were points where
the conflict was not handled well that were worthy of improvement. Some of those marks could be
attributed to my mediation skills. Clearly, my competence was fairly low. All of these concepts
allowed for a lot of inquiry and investigation that could be explained through textual evidence and
classroom information.
Based off the occurrences aforementioned in my personal conflict, I want to focus on specific
concepts, strategies, and techniques to incorporate into the full Case Study. I would like to discuss
the Communicative Theory of Conflict, various conflict styles involved, active listening

Reflection Paper On Listening Lab
Taking part in the listening lab over the course of the semester was an unique experience, and very
different from anything I've ever done in school before. It was interesting getting to know a
classmate on a more personal level outside of the classroom, as that is something that doesn't often
happen in large college classes. It was also interesting being able to watch the development of the
relationship over the course of the semester. There were undoubtedly changes in the way we spoke
to each other, and it was evident that we became more comfortable opening up as the weeks passed.
I was very hesitant to open up about my feelings and problems at the beginning of the semester. I'm

If I noticed my mind starting to wander, or my posture starting to slip, I would have to remind
myself to re–engage with the conversation both mentally and physically. As the semester went on, it
became increasingly easy to open up and talk to my listening partner about my life. This is
something I was expecting going into the listening lab, because it's natural to feel more comfortable
around someone the more time you spend around them. Around the fourth or fifth time we met, I
noticed myself being able to talk for much longer than I was able to a the beginning. The meetings
with my listening partner became more of a conversation, rather than one of us speaking for a
designated chunk of time before switching to the other person. A key part of this transition was
figuring out what worked best for each of us in terms of listening style. My listening partner and I
explored a few different techniques over the course of the semester in order to determine which
strategies allowed us to feel the most comfortable, and get the most out of the sessions. One of the
main listening techniques we used throughout the semester was to ask questions. We found that
asking questions in response to whatever the speaker was talking about enabled a richer, more in
depth conversation to ensue. When asking questions, I made sure to keep in mind the guidelines for
good questions that we

Therapeutic Relationships Are Essential Towards The...
Therapeutic relationships are essential towards the establishment of success in both the
Patients' quality of care, willingness to engage with the healthcare provider and fostering a
positive helping alliance. The development of a therapeutic nurse–patient relationship is associated
with the unfolding of mutual trust and respect. As a nurse, your responsibility within the relationship
is to provide a nurturing environment of both faith and hope, while exhibiting sensitivity towards
your patient and their families. Gregory, Raymond–Seniuk, Patrick & Stephen (2015) describes a
therapeutic relationship between the nurse and client as purposeful, goal–orientated, time–limited
and always housing the patients' best interests and outcomes at the center (p. 608). The purpose of
the simulation interview was to gain exposure of what skills we as nursing students portray within
developing the nurse–patient relationship, but also become aware of what aspects of the interview or
relationship that we could work to improve on. One of the major strengths of our simulation
interview was the establishment of the nurse–patient therapeutic relationship. From the beginning of
the interview, the proper steps were taken when working through the different phases of developing
the client–nurse relationship: the introduction, working and termination phases. Both introductions
from the nurses and the patient were completed at the beginning of the interview. Explanation of the

Effective Workplace Communication
Listening and Effective Workplace Communication
James Humes, a former presidential speech writer, stated that, "the art of communication is the
language of leadership" (Leading Thoughts, 2010). Communication is an essential process that is
common in the workplace. Everyone in the workplace especially leaders must communicate with
others. Ideas, conversations, disagreements, and commitments can all be exchanged through
communication. Anyone can communicate but it takes discipline and skills to effectively
communicate. These skills can include feedback, presentation, non–verbal communication, and
listening. Listening is the most valuable skills to effective workplace communication because it
enhances job effectiveness, relationships ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If a guest calls down to the front desk and complains about their room the front desk clerk needs to
actively listen to know how to respond. A response may include sending up an item that was
requested by the guest or escalating the problem to upper management. Intently listening to the
message that is presented will help employees and managers respond in an appropriate manner. A
response to listening does not always have to verbal. A non–verbal response like smiling or nodding
can be an appropriate response. It does not matter if the response is verbal or non–verbal, listening
will help to ensure that the response is effective.
People tend to assume that the most important part of the pyramid is the top but they are incorrect.
The bottom of the pyramid is the most important part of the pyramid. The bottom of the pyramid is
the foundation on which the other blocks stand. If there was a pyramid to represent communication
skills, listening would be the foundation or the base for communication. Communication skills build
on each other and the skill that is used for the moment in time is the tip of the pyramid. "Truly
effective communication involves more than just expressing yourself clearly. It also requires
effective listening" (Brown, 2009). Listening helps to strengthen the other communication skills like
feedback and presentation. It is hard to present to an audience without understanding the audience's
needs. To understand the

I am glad that this class had taken part in the listening journal assignment as I was not sure what to

improvement. I do consider my interactions with people in hindsight, and I always hope that I did
my best to listen and communicate with respect. I am fortunate to find out through the logs that I am
above average while listening to others, in respect to the log analysis. I am further aware that this is

I thought about a conversation I had with Jim weeks before this project which covered my worst
subject of politics. I tend to know Jim gets angry about this and goes off the deep end with
conspiracy theories. I could recall and explain back to my daughter what he said several days later
even though I couldn't stand listening to him when he was discussing it at the time, I found this to be
shocking as I did not think I had that amount of recall with listening, especially over topics I am not
fond of. I suffer from chronic illnesses that affect my memory skills so I was very happy to see that I
could recite the information back and have full recall of it. I am suddenly seeing I am not as bad of a
listener as I once thought at all. During our logged conversation, Jim went right back into politics
and I still listened actively by paraphrasing. I want to be able to provide him and anyone I am
listening to the respect I hope someone would show me if I was the speaker. I put considerable
vitality into the listening process and made sure to make good eye contact. I also took notice to
make sure my nonverbal communication was matching my verbal communication. I find active

Classroom Reflection
I have been working in Mrs. Bogner's 5th grade classroom at Columbus Elementary in
Edwardsville, IL. The class itself has a mix of different learning abilities, ranging from very low
level students to very high level students. Although it is not considered an inclusion class, there are
have multiple students in our classroom who spend a majority of the school day in a special
resources classroom where they get extra help in subjects such as math, reading, and English, but
then come back into our classroom for subjects such as social studies and science. Certain students
may go to the special resource class for just one subject, while other students go in for multiple. My
CT classifies all of the students in the class into three different level learning groups for each
subject: average, which is the normal 5th grade level, above average or high, and below average or
low. When picking a student to work with, my CT and I decided it would be a perfect opportunity
for me to work with a lower–level math student who struggles with most concepts. By doing this, I
would not only be getting my assignment done, but I would also be helping him with the assignment
itself and making sure he was answering the problems correctly. After working through the
assignment with him, I reported back to my CT about any concepts he struggled with so she could
know what he still needs a little extra work on.

The Important Study of Organizational Behavior
There is a reason that organizational behaviour is such an important field of study, as it helps us to
make sense of the world around us, not just what goes on inside organizations. (McShane & Steen,
p.3). Organizational behaviour theories help us to re–evaluate ourselves within our distinct roles,
which in turn helps us better understand our self–concept and what values are most significant in our
lives. After completing the "Winter Survival Exercise", it is evident as to why organizations value
groups for every individual adds their own creativity, rationality and intuition to a problem or
opportunity that presents itself. The absolute differences between the individual and group results
that were generated, 68 and 36 respectively, showed how significant group effort can be as the group
results were much closer to the results of the survival experts. Communicating Results When we
were making group decisions, I was somewhat assertive in getting my point of views across but
generally more accepting in listening to others without interrupting. This is reflective in my self–
awareness assessments as my personality and my active listening skills show that I tend to avoid
interrupting people when they are expressing their ideas, but I also like to contribute my thoughts as
well. The communication process within our group involved brainstorming. A group member would

Mentoring : Relationship Between Two Individuals, The...
Mentoring, in general, is a term used to describe a relationship between two individuals, the 'mentor'
and the 'mentee'. In this relationship, the mentor with more knowledge supports and passes on
knowledge to the mentee through teaching, guidance, and encouragement, thus empowering the
mentee to make decisions based on his/her capabilities. According to Fouché & Lunt (2010), in this
relationship, it requires two parties to collaborate together to learn new things, allowing them to
further their personal development and perform to their fullest potential.
In mentoring session, client–centred skills are commonly used. For instance, being congruent and
genuine. Mentor will have to demonstrates integrity and free from pretending someone who they are
not. Furthermore, the mentor will have to accept the mentee as who they are and not pass judgement
on him/her. Lastly, a mentor will have to be empathetic towards the mentee. This means that the
mentor will have to put him or herself in the mentee's shoes to understand and feel how the mentee
feels. Stokes (2003) mentioned that, most of the skills used in mentoring are associated with client–
centred skills. It gave the mentor to understand the point of view from the mentee rather from the
mentor point of view.

What Is Active Listening Essay
What is active listening?
Listening is an integral part of effective communication, some students learn to listen effectively.
Many students think they hear what is said is the same as to hear what is said. In fact, they are
distinctly different. "Audience" is still a passive physical act that involves the process and function
of the perception of sound. 'Listen' is to hear sounds with the deliberate intention. Therefore,
contrary to the hearing, listening is a skill enhancement through effort and conscious practice.
Benefits of Active Listening:
Express their thoughts, feelings and opinions clearly and effectively forms part of the
communication process. Such expression is complemented by active listening and About messages
that others are trying to convey. In fact, good communication and understanding are made possible

How to improve your active listening skills is through practice. You must not be allowed to be

Benefits Of A Pension Fund
Introduction
A pension fund, also known as a superannuation fund or super fund is any plan, fund, or scheme
which provides retirement income. A pension fund is established by a company, governmental
institution or labour union to pay for the (future) pension benefits of retired workers.
Superannuation funds collect retirement savings from workers and their employers, and invest this
money in a wide range of assets. Because pension funds manage the money of up to millions of
individuals, they are major players in the financial markets. Australian superannuation funds are
major investors in the domestic and global capital markets.
Other than a few very specific provisions in the Superannuation Industry funds are not subject to
any asset requirements or investment exposure flaws. There are no minimum rate of return
requirements, nor a government guarantee of benefits. There are some minor restrictions on
borrowing and the use of derivatives and investments in the shares and property of employer
sponsors of funds. As a result, superannuation funds tend to invest in a wide variety of assets with a
mix of duration and risk/return characteristics.

Jonah Goldberg's Writing Style Analysis
Jonah Goldberg appears to stay opened minded in a majority of the columns he writes. Goldberg
does not really allow for the worst of events to bring him down, which gives him the opportunity to

a typical conservative viewpoint on topics, and also really likes to juxtapose the viewpoints of a
conservative to that of a liberal to give the reader an idea of the mind of both parties. Throughout
most of his columns, Jonah Goldberg often uses similar words or phrases to describe certain aspects
and also to begin the topic of each column. However, after reading and analyzing a few of his

Listening is a difficult skill that few people ever learn.
Experts say the average person has 25% listening efficiency.
Listening with understanding, is more than just sitting back and letting words flow into your ears.
Listening is an active skill that is at least as hard as talking, maybe harder.
There is no real communication unless the listener understands, accepts, and will take action based
on what was said.
The person who develops good listening skills has a head start on providing the best solutions based
on information obtained during conversations.

'Active listening' means, as its name suggests, actively listening. That is fully concentrating on what
is being said rather than just passively 'hearing' the message of the speaker.
Active listening involves listening with all senses. As well as giving full attention to the speaker, it is
important that the 'active listener' is also 'seen' to be listening – otherwise the speaker may conclude
that what they are talking about is uninteresting to the listener.
Interest can be conveyed to the speaker by using both verbal and non–verbal messages such as
maintaining eye contact, nodding your head and smiling, agreeing by saying 'Yes' or simply 'Mmm
hmm' to encourage them to continue. By providing this 'feedback' the person speaking will usually
feel more at ease and therefore communicate more easily, openly and honestly.
Listening is the most fundamental component of interpersonal communication skills. Listening is
not something that just happens (that is hearing), listening is an active process in which a conscious
decision is made to listen to and understand the messages of the speaker. Listeners should remain
neutral and non–judgmental, this means trying not to take sides or form opinions, especially early in
the conversation. Active listening is also about patience – pauses and short periods of silence should
be accepted. Listeners should not be tempted to jump in with questions or comments every time

Magneto–rheological fluid to control of Vibrations and Acoustics
*Sourabh Joshi1, **Piyush Nandwal2
1. Acropolis Technical Campus, Indore (M.P.)
In the case of semi–active suspensions with sequential damping, the damping forces are zero or
rather very small as long as the sprung mass is moving away from its static equilibrium position and
suddenly increases when the system is returning to the static equilibrium position. The basic idea of
this semi–active control strategy is to balance the elastic force by the damping force in order to
reduce or even to cancel the forces transmitted through the suspension as long as the spring and
elastic forces ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Semi–active control systems combine the best features of the passive and active ones. They have
almost the same environmental robustness, mechanical simplicity and low cost as passive devices
and can offer the adaptability of active control systems without requiring the associated large power
sources.
In this paper the effect of semi–active suspension with Magneto–rheological fluid to control the
damping characteristic of the system and balanced logic on which the system works is presented.
The damping characteristics are controlled by modulation of fluid–flow orifices, dry friction forces,
electric or magnetic field applied to electro rheological or magneto rheological fluid dampers. The
balance logic is assumed to be achieved with a variable dry friction damper controlled by the
modulation of the normal force applied on the friction plates. For the models with semi–active dual–
rate dampers, the value of the equivalent suspension damping coefficient is a function of the relative
velocity of the sprung mass with respect to the wheel subsystem.
Key Words: Transmissibility factor, Magneto–rheological fluid, Sequential damping

Following the Sandy Hook Elementary School incident in 2012, there have been heated debates
about whether or not if schools should have armed guard to patrol schools to deter the potential
active shooter and to protect the students if the unthinkable takes place.
Many believe that just the presence of an armed guard will prevent any potential of shooting at
schools. In reviewing past major school shooting incidents, the intrepid shooter planned ahead. They
were not expecting anyone at schools would protect the students and staff by shooting back at them.
It is safe to assume, the shooters would have had some hesitations, if they knew they were expect to
confront an armed guard at the schools. If there is a shooting incident, an armed guard can take
immediate action unlike the emergency responders who would have to get to the school and assess
the situation before taking any actions. Even a five to ten minute reprieve could mean life or death
to many students and school staff.
Professionally trained guards can also could play a role in addressing some of the core issues before
they even turn into school shootings. In most cases, the shooters are victims of bullying or have
been depressed for a period of time. In addition to patrolling, the armed guards can watch for
student on student bullying and can observe and report any students that are acting out their

Organizational behaviour is the "study of what people think, feel, and do in and around

to team development and cohesion. Team cohesion is "the degree of attraction people feels toward

What I Have Learned Of Leadership

  • 1. What I Have Learned of Leadership It is hard to quantify what I have learned in the semester of Leadership because the courses focus was not about memorizing data, but rather learning about having the will to lead and finding the courage to make it happen. A majority of the information I learned from this course came from learning about myself. Through readings, course activities, and various projects, I learned what makes a great leader, but more importantly what traits I possess that will make me a great leader. In order to be a great leader, one must have an understanding of what leadership is. Leadership is a social influence (Stogdill, p. 25). It means leaving a mark. It is initiating and guiding, and the result is change. Leading is the result of your passion coming to life. The readings for the course complimented the activities that were done in class. Many of the overarching themes of the course pertained to finding your own passion in life. You can only be a great leader if you are passionate about the cause that you are leading. The Harvard Business Press published an article by Stewart D. Friedman labeled, Total Leadership: Be a Better Leader, Have a Richer Life. The article's aim is to clarify what is important in one's life. One of the ways in which this is accomplished is by describing your hero or someone you admire (Friedman, p. 478). For my Will to Lead paper I discussed how my grandfather was my hero and somebody that I greatly respect. I have always loved learning, but never thought ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Reflection Paper On Listening Styles It is important to understand my listening approaches since they are vital for effective communication. Having effective listening skills are critical in enhancing a communication process that is productive both within and outside an organization. A personal listening profile is essential since it may enable one to emerge as an active and purposeful listener within a wide variety of instances resulting in a productive or efficient communication (Watson & Barker, 1995). This reflective paper is concerned with my listening style profile where I have summed the scores from the survey and demonstrating my most preferred listening style. The study presented the following scores: the sum for people–oriented listening style was 14, an action–oriented listening style was 7, a content–oriented listening style was 12, and the sum for time–oriented listening style was 11. From this score, I demonstrated the highest score in the people–oriented listening style which points out that I am very emphatic and much concerned with other people's emotions, and this is my preferred listening style. I do listen without judging others, and at some point, during communication; I support the speaker as well as learning from other people's experiences. This type of listening style may help me to enhance relationships; however, it might interfere with efficient judgment or decision since I tend to trust others to a great extent (Watson & Barker, 1995). Besides, the people–oriented listening ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Reflection On Learning Habits And Academic Success Learning habits are skills taught or based off of an individual's personal experiences. There are several different forms of learning habits, for example, working in a safe environment, collaborating with others, independently working, being reliable, organized, showcasing initiative, having the ability to possess self–advocacy and to have the flexibility to provide customer service. In this reflection paper, I will address ways these learning habits or skills aid in supporting my academic success. Also, displaying the learning habits I already possess as an individual and capsizing on those skills or patterns I have yet to develop. In summarizing my reflection, I will establish a plan I have for promoting and supporting the learning habits I need to created still. Let's explore some of these options that were associated with learning habits and skills. As stated above learning habits consist of several different formalities; however, as a college student these habits should contain being flexible to work with others, working in a healthy safe setting, possessing the ability to work and student independently, being reliable, having a sense of organizational system, taking the initiative for my actions, asking the appropriate questions to seek clarification when discussing topics, and being able to efficiently listen to determine if I have successfully comprehended the topic of discussion. Each of these factors will assist with my thriving as a successful student. For example, taking the initiative will permit an individual to establish more leadership roles, which as a nurse I do not mind helping anyone who needs help, which consists of being open–minded and flexible. Other incentives associated with these learning habits and student require the student to be disciplined and proactive in their learning experiences. I have learned that having discipline is to key to being a successful college student. Some of the learning habits and skills that I already possess are listed as follows; I tend to seek clarity to comprehend, which entails me analyzing and accessing the situation. These traits tend to make me efficient as a nurse with displaying empathy to others while actively listening to their concerns. At ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Who Is The Owner Of New Zealand Hat Manufacturing... Interviewing Our group interviewed Simon Smuts–Kennedy, who is the owner of New Zealand hat manufacturing business, Hills Hats. How did your group in general act during the interview? The group generally felt that our face–to–face interviewing was both effective and efficient, due in large part to our positive body language, detailed research and preparation that enabled us to elicit the information we sought and respond to answers with further follow–up questions as appropriate. Our interview commenced with introductions, some brief small talk and a reminder about the purpose of the interview and likely duration. This relaxed start seemed to settle everyone's nerves and create a positive atmosphere to foster compelling conversation rather than an inquisition. Fortunately, our interviewee was not shy or nervous. We were careful not to spend too much time talking ourselves, but rather focused on the interviewee's responses, recognising the need to concentrate, not interrupt (needlessly), ask questions (to discover, confirm or clarify), and continue to support the speaker throughout with positive body language and no abrasive or confrontational questioning. How did you in particular act during the interview? Personally, I thought the interview went well and that my behaviour was appropriate – positive body language, showed respect for the interviewee and their responses, avoided distracting comments and mannerisms, listened carefully to answers, and did not interrupt. ... • 9. The Importance Of Teacher And Student Interaction In... Teacher and student interaction could also help students achieve high academic performance. Lev Vygotsky, a Russian psychologist, talked about a person with higher knowledge having a greater influence on our learning. When people who are older and more knowledgeable guide us through a learning process it is easier for us to grasp a better understanding of those concepts and information. Students can ask teachers questions and teachers can answer those questions in ways that will help the student understand the material they are learning. Teachers can practice a method known as high–quality instruction to ensure that all students are understanding the material being taught. According to the IRIS Center Peabody College in Vanderbilt University, "High–quality instruction refers to the utilization of both research–validated instructional practices and core reading programs. Implementing high–quality instruction allows teachers to rule out inadequate instruction as a reason for poor reading performance" (2). The IRIS Center explains this concept in detail, providing further ways to implement high–quality instruction in the classroom. They discuss two ways to implement it. One way is through a practice called "differentiated instruction." This is where the teacher uses students' assessment data and alters instruction to maximize all students' learning (The IRIS Center 2). This way, every student is able to benefit from what is being taught. It also allows teachers to correct ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. The Importance Of Reflection Reflection is where you inspect and analyse, your own thoughts and feelings. It allows you to gain a greater sense of understanding about yourself and the impact you have on the world (Fisher, Chew and Leow, 2015). It enables you to identify your strengths and weaknesses, allowing you to know which areas need support. Reflection is a fundamental part of being a counsellor, coach or mentor, as it plays a role in ensuring professional practise and the development of therapeutic relationships (Fisher, Chew and Leow, 2015). It also demonstrates your commitment to your clients and your career, as it shows you want to improve and develop. A useful way of reflecting is to use models of reflection to provide structure. Gibbs' reflective cycle (Gibbs, 1988) is an effective model to use as it ensures all features of a particular situation have been studied and analysed, which will improve understanding of the situation if it occurs again in the future. It does this through six distinct steps. The first stage of Gibbs model is the description of the events that are being reflected on. Throughout the course, we took skills learnt about in lecture, and attempted to apply these during the practicals. We spent time learning about counselling, coaching and mentoring as a whole, as well as therapeutic relationships, theories and tools that are appropriate. Each practical had tasks to help us engage the learned techniques and we often worked in pairs. Usually we would come up with hypothetical situations and use the framework given to us by the lecturers to get more detail from our 'client'. We spent a lot of time practising our active listening skills, using a range of different tasks, such as standing back to back trying to talk, or getting our 'client' to talk about their plans for the future. Additionally, we used a range of tools, such as The Skilled Helper Model (Egan, 2014) Beck's Cognitive Conceptualisation Model (Beck, 2011) and the GROW Model (Whitmore, 2015). We even had a session where we looked at how people often share the same fears about therapy, especially group therapy. Overall, we spent lots of time learning skills, and then attempting to practise them. The second stage of Gibbs model focuses on the emotions ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Listening Skills In PTE How to improve Listening skills in PTE Effective listening is important because it prevents miscommunication and makes a message clearly understood. Listening is a skill which is required for all types of communication. The process of listening involves five stages– receiving, understanding, evaluating, remembering and responding. An effective listener hear the speech sounds directed towards him, understand the message, critically evaluate the message, remember what is said and respond. Good listening skills help you understand what is being asked, build rapport with the speaker, work in a team–based environment, resolve problems and uncover the meaning of what others are saying. Listening section is one of the crucial sections of the PTE test. It assesses the ability of the test taker how well he/she can respond clearly after listening to a set of instructions. The listening ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is encouraging for the listener to look at the speaker. It will leave you with no choice but to pay attention to the speaker. Nod head: – Nodding head, when you are listening is an indication that you are taking in the information which is being conveyed by the speaker. It also shows that you understand the speaker's feelings. You can show your understanding just by nodding the head or through appropriate facial expressions. Ask questions: – Asking appropriate questions is another indication that you were attentive throughout the process. Once the speaker has finished talking, you can ask questions or repeat his or her instructions to confirm that you understand them. Listening is not something that just happens, but it is an active process, in which conscious decision is made to listen and understand what is being said. • 15. A Career As A Counselor Being a counselor is nothing new as it has been part of my management toolbox for since the it was added only a few years after joining the Navy whether it was for career, personal or professional reasons but the seeds for helping others were planted long before. Being the oldest child was a factor that heavily influenced my drive to help others as I was inclined to help out my mother, who was divorced, with my younger brother and sister. Even after my mother remarried, I always found myself being my brothers' keeper. I would often help out or even do his chores so that when our step–father would come home from being on the road (as he was a truck driver) all those tasks that were assigned before he left were done and thereby keeping him ... • 17. We 're More Alike Than Different Essay We're More Alike Than Different Taylor Roberts "Compromise, communication and consistency are needed in all relationships not just romantic ones." (Elle). When communicating we always find a way to make connections with one another and communicating with individuals that have special needs can be overwhelming and exciting at the same time. Most people wouldn't believe how easy it is to communicate with them and all it takes is a little patience, time, and consideration. In my paper I will talk about how important it is in how we communicate with them and how connecting with them will influence them and us as individuals. The topic I have chosen to talk about is communications between individuals that have special needs and those that don't because people with special needs mean a lot to me. As a high school student I am involved in many things but my favorite is Peer Tutoring. Peer Tutoring gives me the opportunity to help others and volunteer places like the Buddy Walk and Special Olympics. This topic gives me the chance to make others aware of the proper and respectful way to communicate with people that have special needs. As I graduate this year I plan to go to college and become a Special Education Teacher where I will be working a lot with special needs or disabled students and being able to communicate with them is the biggest part of the job. • 19. The Lottery, By Shirley Jackson And An Adaptation Of ``... "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson and an adaptation of "The Metamorphosis" by Peter Kuper are valuable short stories that are worth a close evaluation of. A comparison and contrast of the theme alienation in both stories would lead to a more thorough understanding of the messages behind the texts. The purpose of this essay is to answer the question on "what insights do we gain into the course theme of alienation when we read both "The Lottery" and "The Metamorphosis" side by side?" Gregor Samsa in "The Metamorphosis" by Peter Kuper and the townspeople in "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson are similar in that they both reveal a passive approach to alienation that ultimately leads to the growing of alienation; the alienation is different for Gregor and the townspeople in terms of how active they participate within their community determine their likelihood of being marginalized. Gregor's minimal expression of his feelings towards his family alienates and marginalizes Gregor from his family. The townspeople's active participation in the lottery, however, contributes to the severity of alienation within the town. These two stories attempt to tell us that alienation and the failure to take initiative to resist oppression are interconnected. This essay will compare Gregor Samsa and the townspeople's passivity and also explore how taking on an active and inactive role in their story's context would foster different types of alienation. • 21. A Magneto Rheological Shock Absorber A magneto rheological shock absorber or magneto rheological damper is a damper filled with magneto rheological fluid, which is controlled by magnetic field, usually using an electromagnet. This allows the damping characteristics of the shock absorber to be continuously controlled by varying the current in the electromagnet. This type of shock absorber has found applications in semi–active vehicle suspensions which may adapt to road conditions, as they are driven by continuous sensor monitoring and also with prosthetic limbs. Fig. No.1. Magneto Rheological damper Above figure shows the schematic of magneto rheological damper which is consist of cylinder, piston, piston rod and electrical winding. There are three types of the magneto rheological damper are, Mono tube MR damper Twin tube MR damper Double–ended MR damper MONO TUBE MR DAMPER From the three types, the mono tube is the most common since it can be installed in any direction and it is small in size. A mono tube MR damper, shown in Figure, has only one store for the MR fluid and it is associated with accumulator mechanism to accommodate the changes in volume that results from piston rod movement. The accumulator piston is used for providing a barrier between the MR fluid and a compressed gas (usually nitrogen) that is used for accommodating the volume changes of liquid that occur when the piston rod enters the housing. It involves the counsellor using skills in which they possess in order to communicate effectively with clients (Hough, 1998). This reflective essay clearly articulates my application of counselling skills used in this practice session and suggestions for improvement. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A good way to let a client know you are listening is by the use of minimal responses including expressions and non verbal responses that occur in our everyday conversations (Geldard & Geldard, 2001). For example at the beginning of the session my client said "..., Sometimes I feel I choose my job or something else in my life over my uni..." I replied by nodding and made use of the expression "Mm–hmm". I demonstrated this skill to allow the client to speak without interruptions and to verbally express my interest in her issue. Another skill I used within this session is a technique also known as paraphrasing. Paraphrasing refers to stating in one's own words what they think the client means helping to ensure their understanding and interest in the client (DeVito, 2010). I felt that I demonstrated this when the client said "As the term progresses I get lazier, but at the beginning of the semester I am productive, and it feels rewarding when I do, do well and I feel better about myself and everyone is proud of me as well when I get the results and stuff, but there's this thing that comes into my mind that said I can't do this and maybe I start rethinking about staying in uni and I start considering dropping it, so I can have more free time." According to the article, "Noncaring and Caring in the Clinical Setting: Patients' Descriptions", "Presence is something which reveals itself immediately and unmistakably in a look, a smile, an intonation, or a handshake" (Riemen). The concept of nursing presence may sound similar to the nurse simply caring for the patient. However, nursing presence is much more complex; then simply administering the patient's insulin before every meal. A nurse being present with the patient is actively advocating for the patient. I've seen black–and–white clips of CBS anchorman Walter Cronkite as he heartbreakingly informed America on the assassinations of prominent figures like John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr., as well as breaking the Watergate scandal. I've seen syndicated Sanford and Son reruns, and I've listened to music from 70s and 80s artists like Blondie, The Mamas and Jim Croce. Also, women's pantsuits were really in style around that time. The Jheri curl was big back then, but I never got it or cared for the look. It always looked too oily and drippy for me. Q: What programs on television did you like to watch? A: I liked Three's Company, The Waltons, 60 Minutes, and Good Times. The Jeffersons was on during that time, the whole family used to watch that whenever it showed. Sanford & Son was another show that we all would watch. It still makes me laugh even though I've seen every episode more than once. Q: Did you ever want a job in media? Why? A: Yes, actually. One of my dream jobs was to work in the newsroom as a reporter. I had always been fascinated with television news and reporting. Growing up, we saw newscasters like Walter Cronkite deliver the news to the whole country. It always seemed interesting working in a field where you give information that is sometimes powerful to a group of people, to keep them informed. Q: Who were some of you favorite musical artists? The Benefits Of Active Listening For A Counselling Active Listening – listening to the words being said, the tone in which they are said and paying acute attention to the non–verbal communication. This has many benefits it supports the client to feel understood, valued and accepted. This in turn will support the client to feel empowered. Active listening supports the counsellor to understand what is being said and to identify the clients' thoughts and feelings. Active listening is a skill that needs to be practiced and developed. When talking about this traumatic experience I mentioned that he was one of my good friends and how if he would have lived he would have come to Lubbock Christian University. Also, I conversed that being away from my support group and home town had made coping more difficult. On the other hand we talked about how being alone has helped me become more independent and how I got my boyfriend from my independency. I was able to talk to Mikeala about my boyfriend, my independency, and the wreck. Mikeala performed as the counselor very well with good form and by essentially practicing active listening. The counselor was empathetic and later said that my crying helped her become more empathetic. The crying helped because it was easier to mirror my emotions because she is a sympathy crier. Being an effective listener takes a lot more doing than simply sitting in front of a professor, and hoping everything he or she will say sink in to your memory. Being an effective listener requires you to concentrate primarily on the material rather than on the speaker. Goldberg does a great job of integrating all perspectives and sides when writing his book. As well, he has surely done his share of research. He cites numerous newspaper and magazine articles, as well as quote upon quote upon quote from CBS insiders and fellow reporters. He refers to the constant refusal to have a single left–winger be labeled as "liberal" anywhere in the news, while always labeling those on the right as "conservative." He laughs at how the news has introduced Catherine MacKinnon (who once implied that all sexual intercourse was rape) as a "noted law professor" while Phyllis Schlafly is a "conservative spokeswoman" (CBS This Morning, 1981). By the same token, the Wall Street Journal's editorial page is conservative, but the equivalent editorial page in the New York Times is simply "middle of the road," as the Dan (CBS's nickname for Dan Rather) so elequently puts it. But the fascinating reason why this book is so compelling is not just what is being said, but by whose mouth it is spewing from. A former CBS news correspondent for nearly three decades, Goldberg is surely not conservative. His motive is not to gain conservatives' approval. Nonetheless, no other broadcaster, reporter, nor journalist can compare to the way Cronkite connected with his viewers and the trust that the viewers had in Cronkite. Cronkite passed away July 17, 2009 but he still remains one of the most influential broadcasters here in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 68. Listening Listening is a difficult skill that few people ever learn. Experts say the average person has 25% listening efficiency. Listening with understanding, is more than just sitting back and letting words flow into your ears. Listening is an active skill that is at least as hard as talking, maybe harder. There is no real communication unless the listener understands, accepts, and will take action based on what was said. The person who develops good listening skills has a head start on providing the best solutions based on information obtained during conversations. 1. WHAT IS HEARING & A person who incorporates listening with concentration is actively listening. Listening is the absorption of the meanings of words and sentences by the brain ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 'Active listening' means, as its name suggests, actively listening. That is fully concentrating on what is being said rather than just passively 'hearing' the message of the speaker. Active listening involves listening with all senses. As well as giving full attention to the speaker, it is important that the 'active listener' is also 'seen' to be listening – otherwise the speaker may conclude that what they are talking about is uninteresting to the listener. Interest can be conveyed to the speaker by using both verbal and non–verbal messages such as maintaining eye contact, nodding your head and smiling, agreeing by saying 'Yes' or simply 'Mmm hmm' to encourage them to continue. By providing this 'feedback' the person speaking will usually feel more at ease and therefore communicate more easily, openly and honestly. Listening is the most fundamental component of interpersonal communication skills. Listening is not something that just happens (that is hearing), listening is an active process in which a conscious decision is made to listen to and understand the messages of the speaker. Listeners should remain neutral and non–judgmental, this means trying not to take sides or form opinions, especially early in the conversation. Active listening is also about patience – pauses and short periods of silence should be accepted. Listeners should not be tempted to jump in with questions or comments every time there are a ... Physics Of Semi Active Suspension System ...or paste your text here Optimization of Sequential damping in Semi–active Suspensions with Magneto–rheological fluid to control of Vibrations and Acoustics *Sourabh Joshi1, **Piyush Nandwal2 1. Acropolis Technical Campus, Indore (M.P.) In the case of semi–active suspensions with sequential damping, the damping forces are zero or rather very small as long as the sprung mass is moving away from its static equilibrium position and suddenly increases when the system is returning to the static equilibrium position. The basic idea of this semi–active control strategy is to balance the elastic force by the damping force in order to reduce or even to cancel the forces transmitted through the suspension as long as the spring and elastic forces ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Semi–active control systems combine the best features of the passive and active ones. They have almost the same environmental robustness, mechanical simplicity and low cost as passive devices and can offer the adaptability of active control systems without requiring the associated large power sources. In this paper the effect of semi–active suspension with Magneto–rheological fluid to control the damping characteristic of the system and balanced logic on which the system works is presented. The damping characteristics are controlled by modulation of fluid–flow orifices, dry friction forces, electric or magnetic field applied to electro rheological or magneto rheological fluid dampers. The balance logic is assumed to be achieved with a variable dry friction damper controlled by the modulation of the normal force applied on the friction plates. For the models with semi–active dual– rate dampers, the value of the equivalent suspension damping coefficient is a function of the relative velocity of the sprung mass with respect to the wheel subsystem. Key Words: Transmissibility factor, Magneto–rheological fluid, Sequential damping INTRODUCTION Isolation of passenger from induced shock and vibration is the important task of the suspension of any ground vehicle. Most suspensions have passive springs and dampers with rather limited vibration isolation performance, both for linear and nonlinear restoring or damping characteristics. Their transmissibility ... • 72. Should Armed Guard Be Patrolled Schools? Should armed guard be patrolling schools? There were over 200 school shootings in America from 2013 to 2015 – an average of nearly one a week. In all, these incidents resulted in 59 deaths and 124 non–fatal gunshot injuries. A staggering statistic considering that protecting children at schools has been and will be one of the top priorities for all Americans. Americans disagree on many topics and have diverse social and economic beliefs , but we all agree on providing safe and secure learning environments for our students. Government officials and school administrators face substantial altercations balancing parents' expectations on keeping the students safe, and understanding the best available solutions with limited funding. These ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Following the Sandy Hook Elementary School incident in 2012, there have been heated debates about whether or not if schools should have armed guard to patrol schools to deter the potential active shooter and to protect the students if the unthinkable takes place. Many believe that just the presence of an armed guard will prevent any potential of shooting at schools. In reviewing past major school shooting incidents, the intrepid shooter planned ahead. They were not expecting anyone at schools would protect the students and staff by shooting back at them. It is safe to assume, the shooters would have had some hesitations, if they knew they were expect to confront an armed guard at the schools. If there is a shooting incident, an armed guard can take immediate action unlike the emergency responders who would have to get to the school and assess the situation before taking any actions. Even a five to ten minute reprieve could mean life or death to many students and school staff. Professionally trained guards can also could play a role in addressing some of the core issues before they even turn into school shootings. In most cases, the shooters are victims of bullying or have been depressed for a period of time. In addition to patrolling, the armed guards can watch for student on student bullying and can observe and report any students that are acting out their depression in ... • 74. Organizational Behavior The Ranch Golf Club Case 1. How do the interpersonal communications skills of Peter Clark affect behavior, human relations, and performance at the Ranch? A: "Peter Clark has to continually communicate with his partners and managers, and nothing takes the place of sitting down face–to– face during regular weekly meetings and listening to each other to continually improve operations." (Page 174) "Interpersonal skill is the ability to work well with a diversity of people. Interpersonal skills have also been called relationship management." (Page 21) Peter certainly works well with others; he has a strong way of building relationships and gaining the trust of those who work for him and those who come to the club. He is involved with his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Do not tune out the speaker because you do not like something about him or you disagree with what she is saying. If the topic is difficult, do not tune out; ask questions. Do not think about what you are going to say in reply; just listen." (Page 162) Clark has no problem staying tuned in because his objective is to benefit from the conversation with what his employees and the players at the club have to say. Active projective listening tip number 6 Ask questions. When you feel there is something missing or contradictory, or you just do not understand, ask direct questions to get the person to explain the idea more fully."(Page 163) Since communication is the key to making things work at the Ranch asking questions is a fundamental everyone is most likely using when they have meetings so that everyone is on the same page and understanding thing the same way. "Active projective tip number 9 Think. To help overcome the discrepancy in the speed between your ability to listen and people's rate of speaking, use the speed of your brain positively. Listen actively by organizing, summarizing, reviewing, interpreting, and critiquing often. These activities will help you to actively listen at the projective level." (Page 163) Peter listens to people and he organizes his thoughts summarizes and reviews them and then presents with his partners at meetings at the Ranch. These meetings allow everyone to be involved and improve everyone's performance and experience at the club. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 76. What is Organizational Behavior? Organizational behaviour is the "study of what people think, feel, and do in and around organizations" (McShane & Steen, 2012 p.480). In seminar class on week 6, we completed both in person and in team the winter survival exercise as a class. The winter survival exercise is made up of a list a group of survivors need after crash–landing with a small plane in the woods of Southern Manitoba. The list ranges from ball of steel wool, newspaper, ....... and family–size chocolate bar (one per person). During the seminar class, we found out that there were significant differences in what we each rated personally and as a team. Teams are "groups of two or more people who interact and influence each other and are mutually accountable for achieving ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... My team members also exhibit comfort by showing understanding and building confidence of team members that needs extra help. Additionally, my team members communicate and resolve conflicts effectively by actively listening to every member's idea which involves sensing, evaluating and responding. After my active listening skills inventory assessment, I scored (26) in active listening. In sensing I was scored (9) in avoiding interruption, (6) in maintaining interest, (5) in postponing evaluation. Also in evaluating I was scored (4) in organizing information and in responding I was scored (7) in showing interest. Effective communication which includes active listening is essential to team development and cohesion. Team cohesion is "the degree of attraction people feels toward the team and their motivation to remain members" (McShane & Steen, 2012 p.225). My good active listening helps me influence the team such as allowing me to seat back and give opportunity for other team members to air their views. Even though my team has two women and four men, everyone listens, respects and values each member's ideas at any given exercise irrespective of gender differences. We give attention to the speaker to express him or herself effectively without any interruptions, but we also like to toss out ideas together in an agreeable, pleasing ...
