Sharing data reinforces open scientific inquiry, encourages
diversity of analysis and opinion, promotes new research,
makes possible the testing of new or alternative hypotheses
and methods of analysis, supports studies on data collection
methods and measurement, facilitates the education of new
researchers, enables the exploration of topics not envisioned
by the initial investigators, and permits the creation of new
datasets when data from multiple sources are combined.

Research Data…
is defined, consistent with OMB circular A-110, as the digital
recorded factual material commonly accepted in the scientific
community as necessary to validate research findings
including data sets used to support scholarly publications,
but does not include laboratory notebooks, preliminary
analyses, drafts of scientific papers, plans for future
research, peer review reports, communications with
colleagues, or physical objects, such as laboratory
specimens. (from the OSTP memo)

The Goal
If the data you need still exists;
If you found the data you need;
If you understand the data you found;
If you trust the data you understand;
If you can use the data you trust;
Someone did a good job of data management.
