COMMON MISCONCEPTION:
THE DARK AGES
MEDIEVAL PERIOD
VIS-A-VIS
MEDIEVAL PERIOD
• refers to the period from 5th century to
15th century.
• Renaissance scholarship flourished in the
Medieval Ages.
• Ages were advanced in culture and
produced masterpieces in art, literature,
science, and medicine.
DARK AGES
• is the Early Middle Ages, which is fixed
roughly to be from between 400 AD and
1000 AD.
• Protestants tried their best to recreate
Christianity.
• Catholics considered this as productive
era as far as the spreading of Christianity
is concerned. .
THE BEGINNING
The beginning of the Middle Ages is often
taken as equivalent to the fall of Rome.
There was a break in the history of
western Europe with the Germanic
invasions, but the question of the
beginning of the Middle Ages is too
complex for these invasions to provide
the simple answer it did for older
historiography.
There was a gradual but steady decline in
the institutions of the Roman world from
the third to the eighth centuries that
makes an exact dating difficult.
Although the “barbarians” appeared
to the Romans as looters with their
minds set on destruction, most of
them really aspired to settle within
the borders of the Roman Empire,
and there to enjoy some of the
benefits of a civilization that until
then they had only known from afar.
Thus, after a period of wandering,
each of the major invading bodies
settled in a portion of the empire—
some because that was the territory
they fancied, and others simply
because they had been pushed into
that land by other invaders.
THE VANDALS THE VISIGOTHS
THE BURGUNDIANS THE FRANKS
THE ROLE OF THE CHURCH?
IT WAS COMPROMISED!
From the fifth to the eighth century Western Europe was
swept by a series of invasions that brought chaos to the land,
and destroyed a great deal of the learning of antiquity. The
invaders brought with them two religious challenges that
until then seemed to be matters of the past: paganism and
Arianism. Eventually, both pagans and Arians were converted
to the faith of those whom they conquered. This was the
Nicene faith, also called “orthodox” or “catholic.” In the
process of that conversion, and also in an effort to preserve
the wisdom of ancient times, two institutions played a central
role, and thus were strengthened. These two institutions, to
which we now turn, were monasticism and the papacy.
I
Western monasticism
tended to be more
practical. It did
not punish the body for
the sole purpose of
renunciation, but also
to train it,
as well as the soul, for a
mission in the world.
II
Western monasticism
did not place the
premium on solitude.
From the beginning,
Western monasticism
sought
ways to organize life in
community.
III
Western monasticism
did not
live in the constant
tension with the
hierarchy of the church.
It has been the right
arm of popes,
And bishops.
The RULE
• It seeks a wise ordering of the
monastic life, with strict discipline, but
without undue harshness.
• Stability - Each monk must remain for
the rest of his life in the monastery that
he has initially joined, unless ordered
to go to another place.
• Obedience - not only instant
obedience, but also that an effort is to
be made to make that obedience
willing.
• Physical labor should be shared by all.
The RULE
• Periods were assigned each day for
private prayer, but most of the
devotions took place in the chapel.
• Monks became adept at copying both
the Bible and other books.
• Their houses also became teaching
centers, particularly for the many
children.
• Many also served as hospitals and
pharmacies, or as hostels where a
weary traveler could find shelter.
The Church took over
many public services,
for example education,
that retained their
traditional
basis in the East.
Churches and
monasteries were bound
to the agricultural
economy and profited by
the prominence of local
powers.
The Church had
advantages over the
monarchies. No
secular authority in
the West was able
to control the
Church.
The Church almost alone of
the old institutions
survived, so they looked for
support and continuity.
Bishops often mediated
with the invaders and the
new kings.

Editor's Notes

  1. First are the Vandals. – France, Spain, Carthage, Egypt, Sicily, Corsica, and Sardinia. In 455, they sacked the city of Rome. Their rule was disastrous for the church. They were Arians—they rejected the essential and eternal divinity of Jesus—and under their rule repeated persecutions broke out against both Catholics and Donatists. Donatism was a Christian sect leading to a schism in the Church, in the region of the Church of Carthage, from the fourth to the sixth centuries. Donatists argued that Christian clergy must be faultless for their ministry to be effective and their prayers and sacraments to be valid VISIGOTHS took Rome in 410. By 415 in Spain, and they ruled until they were overthrown by the Muslims early in the eighth century. They too were Arian, but they did not persecute the orthodox in their. Yung mga nanatiling catholics under their rule became the It soon became evident that the orthodox guardians of ancient culture, and thru them, kingdom stayed stable. This led to the conversion of the Visigothic King Recared (586–601) to Nicene Orthodoxy, which he solemnly embraced at a great assembly in Toledo, in 589 ce. After that, the vast majority of the nobles became Catholic, and Arianism soon disappeared. Of course, because of the later kings, they were conquered by Muslims again.
  2. The Burgundians, however, did not persecute the Catholics, as did the Vandals in North Africa. On the contrary, they imitated their customs, and soon many Burgundians had accepted the Nicene faith of their Catholic subjects. In 516, King Sigismund was converted to orthodox trinitarian doctrine, and soon the rest of the kingdom followed suit. The Franks (whose country came to be known as “France”) were at first an unruly alliance of independent tribes, but eventually united due to Merovingian dynasty named after its founder, Meroveus. Clovis, Meroveus’s grandson and the greatest of the Merovingian line, was married to a Christian Burgundian princess, and on the eve of a battle promised that he would be converted if his wife’s God gave him victory. As a result, on Christmas Day, 496 ce, he was baptized, along with a number of his nobles. Shortly thereafter, most of the Franks were also baptized. Later On, the burgundians conquered the franks, and the region become united. Christian plus Christian --- Christians.
  3. Here, the role of the Church was compromised. Since both burgundians and franks are christians, mas lalo pang naging influential yung Church. An example of this was even the Pope, Pope Zacharias gave a consent to overthrow a King, and also, anointed the King. Nangyari yon kay King Pepin – na later on, magiging anak niya si Charlemagne – the uniter of the kingdoms. Yung set back nito, the Kingdom was also given a power to appoint bishopric. With that, bishops became not only a pastor of the people, they were also became landlords. Kings appointed them to manage the Lands.
