2. INTRODUCTION
• Punjab is an agrarian state.
Milk production has been a
natural ally.
• The share of agriculture and allied activities in the net state
domestic product has declined from 34 percent in 2004-05
to 22 per cent in 2012-13 at constant (real) price
5. CHANGES IN POPULATION
• The “19th Livestock Census - 2012” shows an overall increase of 10.9 per cent in
the total Bovine population in Punjab as compared to the previous census of 2007.
• While crossbred cattle and buffaloes have shown 37 and 2 per cent increase in
population, indigenous cattle has declined by 27 per cent.
• The number of milch animals (Cattle & Buffaloes) has increased by 8 per cent from
3.6 million to 3.9 million.
• The number of in-milk Bovine have increased by 7.7 per cent from 2.67 million to
2.88 million.

10. Sahiwal and Indigenous Cattle Society
• Came into existence on 19-03-2016
• Aim to conserve and promote the development of Sahiwal and Indigenous
Cattle and their progeny under eco-friendly atmosphere.
• To develop suitable information technology programme on scientific lines for the
development of Sahiwal and Indigenous breeds
• To enhance contribution of Indigenous cattle towards milk and milk products for
nutritional security for human beings
• To initiate knowledge giving information on the value of indigenous Cow's milk
(A2 protein) and milk products
