Mental Attitude: Undiagnosed Depression Common in Cancer Patients. An assessment of 400 cancer patients treated
at the University Hospital Cancer Center, in Newark, New Jersey between 2013 and 2016 revealed that 40% of these
patients suffered from depression and three out of four were never properly diagnosed or treated for the mood disorder.
Study author Dr. Jason Domogauer notes, “Our findings point to a clear need for action including depression screening
during initial and continuing patient visits, initiation of mental health treatments for identified patients, and increased
collaboration with mental health providers in cancer treatment centers.”

Health Alert: Opioid ODs Have Reduced US Life Expectancy. Researchers have found that despite the increase in life
expectancy from 77 to 79 years of age between 2000 and 2015, drug-related deaths have shaved 3.5 months off the
average American's life expectancy—mostly due to opioid overdoses (ODs) from heroin and prescription painkillers.
Journal of the American Medical Association, September 2017
Diet: Mediterranean Diet May Improve Psychological Resilience. The Mediterranean diet is characterized by the
consumption of vegetables, fruit, fish, lean meats, nuts, whole grains, and olive oil. In this study, 10,812 participants
completed questionnaires designed to assess psychological resilience. The results showed that the participants who more
closely followed a Mediterranean-style diet were better able to successfully adapt to adverse conditions—such as health
problems or financial difficulties—than those with a more Western-style diet.
European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, September 2017
Exercise: Simply Move More. Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions that includes high blood pressure, high
blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and abnormal cholesterol or triglyceride levels that increase the risk of
heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. According to a new study, seniors who stay active in their everyday lives—even
without participating in a formal exercise program—have a lower risk of developing metabolic syndrome. This study adds
to a growing body of evidence showing that being physically active helps improve both longevity and quality of life.
British Journal of Sports Medicine, September 2017
Chiropractic: Resistance Training Can Reduce Headaches. In a recent study, investigators found that engaging in just
one hour of strength-training exercise for the neck and shoulder muscles spread throughout the week can reduce both the
frequency and intensity of headaches. Chiropractors often incorporate at-home exercises into the treatment plan for
patients who seek care for headaches. Musculoskeletal Science & Practice, August 2017
Wellness/Prevention: Keeping Your Brain Healthy. In addition to stimulating your mind with mentally stimulating
activities, the American Heart Association suggests the following to help keep your brain active and healthy: exercise
more, eat a healthy diet, maintain an ideal body weight, control cholesterol, maintain healthy blood sugar, and don’t
smoke. American Heart Association, September 2017
