2. Effects of Consumption on Human Health
“Participants had an overall awareness that there were health risks associated with SSB and ASB consumption, but they lacked
more detailed knowledge of health effects and nutritional composition of these drinks ”(Miller et. al 1)
Regular Soda (SSB)
• Type 2 Diabetes
• Weight Gain/obesity
• Heart disease
• Tooth decay
Diet Soda (ASB)
• Cancer
3. Study Details:
• Participants, enrolled between 1992 and
2000,
• Free of diabetes, heart disease, stroke
and cancer at the onset.
• Each provided data on their
diets, including soft drink
consumption, and other lifestyle
factors.
Results:
• Participants who drank 2+ glasses of soda a
day saw 17 % higher risk of early death
than those who drank <1 glass a month.
• When sugar-sweetened and artificially
sweetened soft drinks were looked at
separately, artificially sweetened beverages
fared worse.
• Drinking two or more glasses of diet
drinks a day was tied to a 26-per-cent
greater risk of early death.

4. Trying to Manage Weight?
Dr. Donald Hensrud, who heads up the Mayo Clinic Healthy Living Program and is the author of the
"Mayo Clinic Diet Book," says drinking diet soda is not as effective at helping people manage their
weight as many people think. (Mayo Clinic News Network 1)
6. Artificial Sweeteners and Health
“Non-caloric artificial
sweeteners (NAS) are
marketed as healthier
alternatives to sugar, but the
relationship between
consumption of NAS and
development of diabetes is
unclear.” (Jensen et. Al 1)
7. Why You Should Cut Diet Soda:
Cleveland Clinic dietitian gives three reasons why you should cut the diet drink out all together.
1. A high-intake of these may result in an increased craving for high-calorie foods
2. Diet soda may cause your body to release insulin in association with the intake of artificial
sweeteners
3. Soda may change your brain's reaction to sweetness.
8. Diet Drinks Linked to Heart
Issues: • "Our study suggests
artificially sweetened
beverages may not be a
healthy substitute for
sugar drinks, and these
data provide additional
arguments to fuel the
current debate on taxes,
labeling and regulation of
sugary drinks and
artificially sweetened
beverages,” (LaMotte 3)
9. Experts Advise Limiting Diet Soda
Consumption:
• “New research found that compared to consumers who completely skipped sweetened drinks,
those who drank lots of beverages with artificial sweeteners had a higher risk of heart disease —
just like people who consumed lots of drinks with sugar added.” (Pawlowski 3)
