The construct of design pattern is often summarised as "the core of a solution to a problem in context". What, then, is the problem that design patterns solve, and in which contexts?
As design patterns break new grounds in educational research and practice, challenging questions arise: how do we engage new audiences in the pattern paradigm? How do we adapt the form and modes of use of patterns to make them useful in diverse realms of practice? Why do we have such a strong conviction in the value of design patterns?
The tradition of design patterns refers to concepts such as "timelessness" and "expertise". These are problematic in a world of accelerating change. Yet another fundamental principle is accentuated; the need to establish robust design languages capable of capturing the complexity of problems in our environment and offering verifiable solutions. I argue that design-level discourse is imperative in many critical domains of human activity, and that patterns should play a central role in such discourse. Over the last few years, my colleagues and I have been developing a methodology for participatory workshops for practical design patterns. This methodology has emerged from the "Learning Patterns" project, and is being refined by the "Pattern Language Network" project.
In this talk, I will describe the methodology, its history and future plans, and provide some illustrative examples. I will also highlight some of the fundamental questions which is provokes.

FutureEverything has developed a model we call open prototyping. Our labs create concepts and prototypes that spark imagination and ask questions about the implications of new technology. Ideas can then be demonstrated at the scale of a city through our festival.
Open prototyping is to develop and test a concept or process through input of external contributors. Our projects are open to many contributors and also are often made with a public audience in mind. They benefit from the co-creation of many external contributors and the interface to a real public.

Overall life span (LS) was 1671.7±1721.6 days and cumulative 5YS reached 62.4%, 10 years – 50.4%, 20 years – 44.6%. 94 LCP lived more than 5 years without cancer (LS=2958.6±1723.6 days), 22 – more than 10 years (LS=5571±1841.8 days). 67 LCP died because of LC (LS=471.9±344 days). AT significantly improved 5YS (68% vs. 53.7%) (P=0.028 by log-rank test). Cox modeling displayed that 5YS of LCP significantly depended on: N0-N12, T3-4, blood cell circuit, cell ratio factors (ratio between cancer cells-CC and blood cells subpopulations), LC cell dynamics, recalcification time, heparin tolerance, prothrombin index, protein, AT, procedure type (P=0.000-0.031). Neural networks, genetic algorithm selection and bootstrap simulation revealed relationships between 5YS and N0-12 (rank=1), thrombocytes/CC (rank=2), segmented neutrophils/CC (3), eosinophils/CC (4), erythrocytes/CC (5), healthy cells/CC (6), lymphocytes/CC (7), stick neutrophils/CC (8), leucocytes/CC (9), monocytes/CC (10). Correct prediction of 5YS was 100% by neural networks computing (error=0.000; area under ROC curve=1.0).

Bespoke design (Re)design self-management tools from an every day life perspective Co-designing with people with diabetes, family, care givers, interaction designer, product design, social/design researchers Open to ‘other’ potential participants, e.g. FabLab, students from design school, from other schools, engineers, jewlery designers, interaction designers, and so on
- 3. Design process (participatory) design share redesign share redesign share
- 4. Share what? Functions… but also meanings, personal feelings, experiences and different considerations concerning a tool. So, we also want to share these meanings that participants give to a technical, functional tool
- 5. Start-up 3 participants with diabetes, 3 challenges, 3 self-management tools motivation, personalisation, public use
- 6. Exploring meanings concerning these challenges using a design game An informal and playful setting to express and confront viewpoints
- 7. In order to share these, we co-designed a scenario that represents the meanings of the challenge that is involved and a proposition for actions to overcome the challenges. First in a paper format and later in a video message.

Some had experience in designing for diabetes/health care in general, others not
- 9. Participants explained the three low tech prototypes that they developed and expressed their perspective in video messages to share them with participants with diabetes and the FabLab community and enable elaborations upon these prototypes
- 10. Following steps Continue development of prototypes and sharing Redesign them for/with new participants, exploring use of documentation Develop an online platform to share with a broader community Importance of a growing community during project time
