The Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL), like many other projects within biodiversity informatics, maintains terabytes of data that must be safeguarded against loss. Further, a scalable and resilient infrastructure is required to enable continuous data interoperability, as BHL provides unique services to its community of users. This volume of data and associated availability requirements present significant challenges to a distributed organization like BHL, not only in funding capital equipment purchases, but also in ongoing system administration and maintenance. A new standardized system is required to bring new opportunities to collaborate on distributed services and processing across what will be geographically dispersed nodes. Such services and processing include taxon name finding, indexes or GUID/LSID services, distributed text mining, names reconciliation and other computationally intensive tasks, or tasks with high availability requirements.

Datahub for museums (poster)

LoCloud: Local Cultural Heritage Online and in the Cloud

LoCloud's goal is to make content from small cultural institutions accessible online through Europeana. It has developed services like LoCloud Collections and aggregation tools to help institutions digitize and publish their collections. LoCloud Collections allows institutions to set up online catalogs and websites for their collections using open source software. Aggregation tools allow metadata to be harvested and enriched before being added to Europeana. LoCloud has also made microservices and APIs available to developers to create new applications using cultural data.

It is supported by the nonprofit organization DuraSpace which provides technical leadership, community development, and hosting services to Dspace and other open source projects.

Abstract: DSpace-CRIS is a free open-source platform based on DSpace for Research Data and Information Management, adopted by a wide international community of universities and research centers: DSpace-CRIS Home. It complies with recommendations, open standards and technologies such as the OAI-PMH, SignPosting, and ResourceSync (recommended by the COAR Next Generation Repositories WG), it features complete ORCID integration, compliance with the CERIF model, the IIIF framework, and with the OpenAIRE Guidelines for Literature Repositories, Data Archives, CRIS Managers, to improve findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reuse of digital assets for research and cultural heritage. DSpace-CRIS collects and disseminates information about researchers' profiles, organizations, publications, patents, grants, awards, and all entities that populate the research domain and their relationships, besides storing and exposing full-text publications, datasets, and other relevant digital objects, providing persistent identifiers and long-term preservation capabilities. DSpace-RDM exposes datasets to visual exploration and M2M streaming for analysis thanks to the integration with CKAN. DSpace-GLAM enhances the fruition of the cultural heritage through the (crowd-funded) IIIF image viewer, providing remote fruition of cultural heritage and offering a great user experience. These flavors of DSpace allow to expose and share open data, open information, and open digital objects in a collaborative, interoperable, and sustainable way. The use cases of a variety of institutions in different countries and continents will be shared to show the use of this powerful technology.

There are many perspectives, however, on how to develop services that are responsive to the many needs of scientists; sensitive to the concerns of scientists who are not always accustomed to sharing their data; and that are attractive to campus administrators. This presentation will discuss the development of campus-based data services programs, the centrality of data citation to these efforts, and the ways in which engagement with DataCite can enhance local programs.

An Improved People-Search Technique for Directed Social Network Graphs

Authors: Vacharasintopchai, Thiti and Nguyen-Huu, Phong Issue Date: 11-Dec-2009 Type: Article Series/Report no.: Proc. 2nd International Conference on Robotics, Informatics, and Intelligent Technology (RIIT2009); Abstract: Social networks offer incredible opportunities for users to create contents and share their experiences. The number of users joining these social networks has been rising dramatically. However, in a social network several users may share the same name. This causes name ambiguity in which search engine returns homogeneous search results for each queried name. To solve this problem we propose an approach to improve search results for finding friends within a large social network by using friendships among users as our backbone feature. Our approach finds most ranked seeds by using PageRank algorithm before computing approximate shortest path in a directed graph. We also retrieve real data from the social network Twitter to verify our approach. Results show that our approach outperforms the SeedBase approach which selects seeds randomly with large margin. Weblog, Digital Library, and Semantic Web Services Approach to Computer-Aided...

A Structural Engineering Support System using Semantic Computing

This document presents a dissertation submitted by Thiti Vacharasintopchai for the degree of Doctor of Engineering in Structural Engineering. The dissertation proposes developing a support system for structural engineers using semantic computing technologies. It aims to address limitations in available computing tools and access to relevant knowledge that hinder engineer productivity. The dissertation reviews knowledge management and related technologies and outlines the development of two frameworks: 1) a Weblog and Digital Library framework (Blog+DL) for engineering knowledge management and 2) a Semantic Web Services framework (SWSCM) for computational mechanics. Proof of concept prototypes are developed to demonstrate the joint application of Blog+DL and SWSCM in building a support system and facilitating computationally intensive workflows.

A Parallel Implementation of the Element-Free Galerkin Method on a Network of...

Issue Date: Apr-2000 Type: Thesis Publisher: Asian Institute of Technology Abstract: The element-free Galerkin method (EFGM) is a recently developed numerical technique for solving problems in a wide range of application areas including solid and fluid mechanics. The primary benefit of these methods is the elimination of the need for meshing (or remeshing) complex three-dimensional problem domains. With EFGM, the discrete model of the object is completely described by nodes and a description of the problem domain boundary. However, the elimination of meshing difficulties does not come freely since the EFGM is much more computationally expensive than the finite element method (FEM), especially for three-dimensional and non-linear applications. Parallel processing has long been an available technique to improve the performance of scientific computing programs, including the finite element method. With efficient programming, parallel processing can overcome the high computing time that is typically required in analyses employing EFGM or other meshless methods. This work focuses on the application of the concepts in parallel processing to EFGM analyses, particularly in the formulation of the stiffness matrix, the assembly of the system of discrete equations, and the solution for nodal unknowns, so that the time required for EFGM analyses is reduced. Several low-cost personal computers are joined together to form a parallel computer with the potential for raw computing power comparable to that of the fastest serial computers. The processors communicate via a local high-speed network using the Message Passing Interface (MPI), a standard library of functions that enables parallel programs to be executed on and communicate efficiently over a variety of machines. To provide a comparison between the parallelized and the serial versions of the EFGM computer program, several benchmark 3D structural mechanics problems are analyzed to show that the parallelized EFGM program can provide substantially shorter run time than the serial program without loss of solution accuracy.
