ACADEMIC RESEARCHAND TEACHING EXPERIENCE
 CEATI Project No: CESIG-10-01. Motor Efficiency Estimation of Three Phase AC Motors Using
Standard No-Load Tests – SMERT (2007 – 2008)
This research lead to new software tool to assess AC three-phase squirrel-cage induction motor efficiency
for motors whose voltage rating is between 200 V and 7.5 kV at a much lower cost than dynamometer
testing. The new tool assesses energy efficiency of rewound motors and enables customers to more
accurately evaluate whether to repair or replace a motor. It also provides reliable efficiency data that
enables improved energy efficiency standard development for repaired motors. This project was
sponsored by BC Hydro, SaskPower, Manitoba Hydro, Hydro Quebec and Bonneville Power
Administration.
 Contributions to the Study of Transients in AC Electric Machines with VFDs (2000 – 2004)
The goal of my research was to develop novel, more efficient and faster mathematical models and
algorithms for modeling AC machines and drives. I built my own mathematical models that I
experimentally validated in the Research laboratory of our department. A very important factor in
validating my models was my industrial involvement in a wide range of industrial applications through
the work that I did as a Consulting Engineer.
 Dynamic Stability in Power Systems with Asynchronous Generators (1999 – 2000)
Both the “Surduc” Hydro Power Plant and the “Semenic” Mountain Wind Turbine Generator are located
in Western Romania and are administrated by the National Company of Electricity – “CONEL”. The
“Surduc” Hydro Power Plant has a 1.5 MW asynchronous generator and the “Semenic” Mountain Wind
Generator has a 260 KW induction generator. The first one produces electricity for the villages located
around the hydro power plant reservoir and the second one supplies power to a motel.
The project was to study the stability of the two generators and improve their dynamic behavior (as set
by ISO 10816-5:2000 and IEC/CD 61400-4) related to the safe, stable and efficient operation of the
generators in sudden load change conditions.

New technologies, products and solutions to improve personnel safety when dealing with energized power
systems equipment, modelling/analyzing/reducing the arc flash hazard risk factors down to as low levels
as possible, “dynamic” protection systems dependent on the always changing condition of the load
demand and configuration whose target would be to minimize the incident energy levels and energy
losses while still allowing for acceptable protective device coordination, intelligent current and voltage
sensing that would diagnose normal and faulty conditions of the system and make clearer
differences/decisions on the appropriate protection response, overall advancement of the state of the art
of the Power Safety and System Security, identifying, developing, and justifying commercialization of
significant growth opportunities for diverse businesses.
