Hydraulic Project Approvals
(HPAs) for projects on the
island from 1997-2010.

6. HPAs must be issued
for all new construction,
damage repair, and
restoration projects.

7. Here’s what we found...

8. 750 foot net reduction of
hard shoreline armoring
(seawalls & bulkheads)

9. 1,536 square foot
reduction of opaque
overwater structures
(docks & floats)

10. 523 feet of creosote
treated wood bulkhead
have been replaced

11. 583 creosote treated
pilings have been or
will be removed
(some restoration projects have
not been completed)

12. 4,036 cubic yards of
sand and gravel will be
deposited over time to
“nourish” our beaches

13. 28,518 square feet of
native vegetation has
been planted

14. 125,676 square feet of
tideland have been or
will be restored
(again, some restoration projects have
not been completed)

15. 196,020 square feet of
eelgrass have been or
will be planted

16. “No net loss” was not
the standard in 1996,
but it is today.

17. Our new SMP must
guarantee no net loss of
ecological function as of
the day it takes effect.

18. We won’t be able to
count the good things that
have happened in the
last 13 years...

19. but if we look at the
island as a whole...

20. we see that existing policies
are mitigating loss and
producing gains.

21. Our cumulative impact
has produced a net gain
in ecological function.
