- But in 2011, I went uninvited to a small closed door presentation on the results of a 5 year study assessing the integrity of Suffolk County’s Drinking water supply. What was presented blew my socks off – what it showed was that the nitrates in the underground aquifers was going up-up-up. That it was directly tied to changes in land use, and in particular to the use of cesspools and on-site septic systems. But the consultants that did the studies were looking at this solely from the drinking water perspective. But On Long Island, we don’t have mountain streams, except for rain that falls right ton the bays, all the fresh water flowing to Long Islands waterways is flowing through the ground. If the nitrates in the ground are going up like this, then so is the amount of nitrates flowing to the bays. When we added in the time lag that it takes for ground water to flow from communities to the bays and even lakes – it was like finding the missing link that tied everything together.
